Hey everyone

I'm just curious as to what you are all using as your load out for your lords.

I've been experimenting with several different variants and cannot find one to stick with.

Let me know what's been working for you, or what you've had a fun time playing.

Thanks!

Only thing I have against that is the redundancy of giving a model with the MoK Rage when he already has it... But oh well I suppose.

I'll have a couple built, when all is said and done.

Power Armored guy:
Murder Sword
Veteran of the Long War (I play against a lot of marines)
Aura of Dark Glory
Mark of Tzeentch
135 points for a 3+/4++ guy with 3 wounds and decent Close Combat.

Terminator Armor Guy:
Terminator Armor
Murder Sword
Veteran of the Long War
Mark of Tzeentch
160 points for a 2+/4++ guy that can teleport onto the table with a squad of terminators or jump out of a Land Raider to beat face.

I'm using a fast Lord to be accompanied by six Slaaneshy Bikers (or Spawns some day):
Chaos Lord w/ MoS, bike, murder sword, melta bombs, sigil, VotlW.
He's fast and hard hitting against the enemy warlord. He'll slay him no matter what.

What is it with the Murder Sword that makes it so popular? Everyone appears to want to take it, but it only seems like an overpriced power weapon to me. The chances that the nominated character ends up in close combat with the wielder are slim at best so you're basically paying for something that you have only a very slight chance to use... and if by some twist of luck you manage to kill that character, then the sword is back to being an overpriced power weapon.

Am I missing something?

It forces them to play keep away, I suppose. Area denial is the best denial.

A lightning claw isn't a bad choice if you don't want to spend the points on a Murder Sword.

How does it keep anyone away? Dodging challenges is so mindlessly easy that it's laughable. Really, the only artifacts that aren't terrible are the flamer and (in the hands of a flying daemon prince) the black mace.

I tend to run a lord with murder sword and power axe, the other upgrades come and go, however my nurgle lord runs in terminator armor since he can take blight grenades.

IIRC the murder sword rule says he just has to be in btb contact with his target for it to become that S8 AP1 monstrosity, not that he has to be in a challenge with the target model. So, he could effectively wipe out the rest of the unit if his challenge is avoided.

They just put the nominated character at the back, let your lord pile in onto chumps, and pile their character in on your chumps. They never make base and you're swinging an overpriced power sword. They just make sure to avoid pulling casualties near your Lord and keep piling more chumps on him.

I run my lord with MoNurgle, a Sigil, power fist, the flamer, and Veterans of the Long War. MoN and Sigil means he's not as scared of most powerfists, so striking at I1 is fine and he stays in power armour to hang in a rhino with Plague Marines. With the Brand, might as well take a specialist weapon and get broader damage potential. Expensive enough to be a threat in both shooting and cc, and cheap enough to stuff more bodies and guns into the list. Veterans is a purely fluff choice and I doubt I'd bother in a fully competitive version.

Equipping the Murder Sword lord with either a steed, bike, or jump packs could easily circumvent that issue...

I mean the back of the unit, not the field. You need to make base contact, not just be in the same fight. Improved mobility doesn't change the fact that intelligent positioning will keep the target out of base, since your lord is making his pile in movement very early on, and that wargear doesn't modify the pile in movement. As long as the target is more than 3" from the front rank of his unit, or otherwise behind models, it's impossible for your lord to make a legal pile in to get base contact. He bases your lord with chumps, then piles his character in elsewhere.

Don't worry too much here. If the enemy character is not in base contact, then you could go for a challenge. A Lord with MoS has I6 and with the murder sword will eventually slay the enemy before he can swing back.

As someone who plays Tau, I just chuckle at your discussions about buying all sorts of fancy overpriced weaponry for your expensive characters. Please, over-equip your characters to kill more sergeants. I want more shiny trophies of blinged out chaos lords/sergeants to put on my wall.

Stick with single lightning claw or a daemon weapon- something cheap and cheerful. If you see a really scary beatstick guy in front of you, just shoot him! No sense letting the swarmlord get into punching range when you can suffer 0 casualties in rapid fire range, etc.

I've modeled quite a few, I seem to be a Chaos HQ'aholic. I now have 16 different HQ's to pick from. I'll give my three favorites.

Chaos Lord
MoK, Jump Pack (winged from Possessed set)
Lightning Claw, Powerfist, Aura, Veteran - 145 Points

Chaos Lord
MoK, Bike, Combat Familiar (modeled from a leftover Bloodletter), Veteran
Burning Brand, Power Sword, Melta Bombs - 170 Points

Chaos Sorcerer
MoS, Slaanesh Steed, Force Sword, Sigil, +1 Psyker Level - 145 Points

The rest of the collection are 2 demon princes, Typhus, Abbadon, Kharne, Huron, Ahriman, Lucius, 2 other lords, 2 different sorcerers, and a dark apostle.

Circumvent unit in movement phase. "back" of unit is now the "front." Proceed to assault.

I enjoyed a Khorne lord with a black mace. Defiles many things! I happily created a model for it about two years back as I thought it looked cool and then to my joy some rules came out for that load out. Great times!

Not vague at all, absolutely illegal. You have to swap a weapon to get each of those artefacts, and a Daemon Prince only has one weapon to trade. And anyway, the Mace is better for the DP because having the Smash rule makes it AP2. AP2 mace == a lot of toughness tests for your opponent.

I've been running a Lord with jump pack, sigil, gift of mutation, mark of slaanesh, meltabombs, and a black mace. It's been pretty devastating so far, usually killing anything it's fighting in a challenge just through sheer number of attacks when fighting marines, and absolutely devastates xenon armies. He runs with my 10 strong raptor squad with MoS and an Icon of Excess to give him FnP.

Oh, true! I was thinking about it saying you can change one weapon, so that may prohibit changing both even if you had two weapons.

Since Khorne is my favourite Chaos God and I have the old Chaos Lord model that I'm loathe to change.

Chaos Lord: mark of Khorne, sigil of corruption, power axe, plasma pistol.

I could make the axe the axe of blind fury to get rid of being unwieldy.
