I'm going to assume most of you have seen the previews (Google it otherwise). I had quite the nerdgasm upon seeing M. Bison, Bowser, Q*Bertm, Eggman and the like all together for the first time. It's also cool to see some very mainstream recognition of arcade and 8-bit culture. Anyone else primed for this one?
Also, I challenge everyone to Fix-It Felix Jr!

There's been mainstream recognition of 8-bit/16-bit video games every since being 'nerdy' became cool.
Definitely looking forward to seeing the film though, I've heard a lot of good things. Animation looks pretty good.

Note that I said "very" mainstream (and selling mario shirts at walmart isn't the same to me). And Disney slapped their name on it so no doubt the animation is awesome. I want a street fighter movie with those graphics and lots of mindless violence.
And 60,700 thus far :d

If they introduced the characters through the tournament by way of flashbacks before each fight sequence, they could tell an awesome story without interrupting the fighting. It doesn't really have to be that convoluted, really just reveal why the characters do or don't like each other.

Love it. I want to see a finished script by the end of next week.
Onto Wreck-it Ralph, I've been looking forward to it for a few months now. It looks like it'll be pretty good.

I believe the DOA: Dead or Alive movie actually did it right. It's basically a short sequence for each important character, and then the tournament happens. It's a fething fighting game, you don't need that much of a plot, just show us the characters beating the snot out of each other.
Although actually, I have to say that the original Mortal Kombat was at least decent. The plot's okay and the fighting is badass. What more do you need?

Wreck It Ralph is on my list for a "Dollar Theater" or "rental" viewing. Every video game movie ever made has been terrible and I somehow doubt this will manage to change anything. Even if Pixar's behind it.

I disagree. It's a nearly-nonexistant plot, but ultimately it's just a revenge story tailored to each character, except Zangief & E.Honda, who are motivated by jingoism.
I would say Ai Cho Aniki, Metal Wolf or else Revolution X are the strangest.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is excellent. Mortal Kombat was fun, at least.
This one looks pretty good.

But this isn't a "video game movie" per se. While it may include many cameos of video game characters, ultimately it is just a video-game-themed movie. To my knowledge, there's no actual Wreck-It Ralph game, and it doens't have to follow an existing video-game plot, unlike true "video game movies", like Super Mario Brothers or Street Fighter.
As a result, it can have a plot that is meant for the screen, and thus be decent.

Which is something it has in common with Scott Pilgrim. Rather than being a licensed franchise to cash in on a particular game's popularity (like all the crappy ones), it's a new work inspired by various games.
Though I'm trying to remember- was Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within any good? It's been a bunch of years since I saw it.

It captured the "feel" of the earlier Final Fantasy games, particularly 7. Otherwise, it didn't have much in common and could have just as easily been titled "Space marines: The Spirits Within". But I enjoyed it; a solid 7.5/10
Mind-blowing CGI for its time, though. That movie required entirely new programs to be built during its production.

I did not enjoy watching it, but not because it's a video game movie.
The animated Street Fighter movie and the Mortal Kombat movies are both good, in my opinion. The live action Street Fighter movie had its moments (read: Zhangief and M. Bison), but was overall bad. The Final Fantasy 7 movie was okay, but I only really "got" the plot on my most recent viewing.

Spirits Within is proof of the Yahtzee theory of Final Fantasy games, Square Enix secretly just wants to make films.

FF The Spirits Within never got finished, if you watch the interviews. The plot isn't supposed to make complete sense cuz they just garbled it together at the last minute :/ They're actually missing the typhoon animation when the big ship is falling at the end.
And the Fatal Fury movies were good, if they took a few liberties. Would have been cool to see Terry just using his supers and not the old mans.

Disney, I am disappointed in you.
First, despite already showing in North America, the movie is not coming out here until Boxing Day. The UK has to wait even longer - until the 15th of February. Second, there appear to only be two Sergeant Calhoun toys: a cheapo monopose one that comes in a playset, and a $100 limited edition one that doesn't look at all like the character.

Saw it opening day,
The game refrences are minimum and only ther for maybe the firt 20 minutes.
The rest is pure story with things many people will get.
5 out of 5. me and a group of 20 yr olds saw it, loved it.

Game references are minimum? There are plenty through out the story, but they're not rife and overbearing.
I saw it with my parents, who are very non-gamer. We all enjoyed it, and my dad and I agreed there needed to be a Tetris reference....
I would suggest anyone that is anyone... go see it.
