Arnold Schwarzenegger is returning to the role that made him famous, playing Conan in a new film from Universal, according to Deadline. The new film, The Legend of Conan, will take place in the same continuity as the 1982 John Milius film in which Schwarzenegger had his first starring role, ignoring both the 1984 sequel and the 2011 reboot starring Jason Momoa (see "'Conan' Bombs"). Conan, like Schwarzenegger, will be older.
The film will be produced by Fredrik Malmberg, CEO of Conan property owner Paradox Entertainment, and Chris Morgan, who wrote and produced Wanted and the last four Fast and Furious films.
Universal hopes to release the film in the summer of 2014.

Y'know, I'm sorta looking forward to this. Primarily because of the endings for the first two movies where it has Conan sitting on his throne while the wizard narrates. Would be cool to see Conan at an older age.

Indeed.

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/120343-Schwarzenegger-Signs-On-for-The-Legend-of-Conan

Schwarzenegger recently confirmed that he has signed on for The Legend of Conan, a direct sequel to the 1982 film that will debut in 2014.

"I always loved the Conan character and I'm honored to be asked to step into the role once again," Schwarzenegger said. "I can't wait to work with Universal and the great team of Fredrik Malmberg and Chris Morgan to develop the next step of this truly epic story."

Looks like it really is happening then ?!

I thought of the Howard short story "The Phoenix on the Sword", whose plot dealt with a plan to overthrow King Conan of Aquilonia.

Interesting. Conan was a great movie. I wonder though how he will fit in the new one. Will he be king and other younger actors do all the heavy lifting?

That's just like your opinion, man.

I loved it. Mamoa was so much better than Arnie. Plus, do we really want this as Conan?

Sadly, Mako is also dead, so we won't have any kickass narration either...

The Phoenix on the Sword could work very well as the basis for the story. Go back to the source.

Arnie blackblack is old and soft now, but costume and CGI will help. He's also not a pro athlete, so there's no reason to think he can't/won't use every tool at his disposal to get back in shape.

I thought the Momoa Conan was okay. It was more of a Marvel Comics Savage Sword of Conan movie than a faithful rendition of the stories. Which is okay; the original movie also bears very little relation to the original stories, but is a much better piece of filmmaking. More epic drama and sweep, an utterly classic score, and solid supporting cast, particularly Von Sydow and James Earl Jones.

Momoa was a much better physical match than Arnold, but I got the feeling that he really wasn't into the character and didn't take Conan at all seriously. The movie still portrayed the character a bit more accurately, and there were some nice references to the original stories in the script. I thought it was entertaining, but lacked a good story, and the cast overall was pretty weak. His buddy the pirate captain was probably the best of them. Rose McGowan was okay, too. But the chick and the main villain were both weak.

Not sure if want...

I have Conan the Barbarian on my Sky box so I can re watch it, it's a good movie, but he's 65 now, and reboots haven't been going well recently IMHO ...

However I love conan, I even just discovered one of the bookshops in town has the reprints of the comics, I got "The Monster of the Monoliths, and other stories" but never got to see the Mamoa as Conan, He's a great actor, but was it really that bad?

I liked both Arnie's and Momoa's Conans.

Arnie had the attitude but not the "proper" physique, while Momoa had both the attitude and the "proper" physique to play the Cimmerian.

Arnie didn't have the intelligence, but he gave a really fun spin on the character.

Momoa could have done it justice, I think, but he was too in love with Kal Drogo (his favorite barbarian character) and didn't study the Conan stories properly, to learn how much more a badass Conan should be, and take it seriously in terms of how important the role could have been in terms of building his own legacy as an actor.

I first read the thread title as "he really will be black", so I was really confused when I read the OP. At first I thought it meant that Arnold would be putting on black face to reprise his role as Conan, which didn't really make sense.

As long as the movie has Conan killing lots of people and doing lots of cool stuff, this movie will be okay. That's all it needs to be. Senseless, well directed violence. People don't watch Conan movies for sophisticated stuff. People watch Conan movies to watch Arnold kick arse.
