Death-Dealing Ultramarine Devastator

I was bored of study so I decided to create the Games Workshop index. I basically converted all of the foreign currencies to New Zealand dollars for the price of the new mega paint set. Here are the results:
New Zealand: Price in NZD = $860.00
Japan: Price in NZD = $932.01
Australia: Price in NZD = $920.28
Norway: Price in NZD = $900.00
Sweden: Price in NZD = $773.00
Denmark: Price in NZD = $771.22
Canada: Price in NZD = $657.83
Euro zone: Price in NZD = $581.98
GB: Price in NZD = $548.10
USA: Price in NZD = $546.93
I made this to outline the differences in prices of GW products around the world. Its similar to the commonly known "Big mac" index. Just some food for thought.

Clearly it costs 370 dollars to ship each individual paint set from the UK to Australia.
Although in all seriousness, shipping is actually quite expensive when I buy from overseas (generally an extra 25-30% on top of the order). It's actually not that unreasonable to assume that individual GW stores can't quite get a bulk shipping discount on new stock- I've never seen a stock shipment sitting in an Australian GW store that was larger than 3 or 4 of decent sized boxes. The differences in wages, etc, I can believe.

Closer to £60 for a single paint.
You think I'm kidding? That's the shipping that gets added if you try to order a single paint from GWUK and send it to Oz.

It's not just shipping costs, but factoring in wages paid in different countries as well.
Not saying it isn't stupid pricing, but if everything costs twice as much in Japan compared to the rest of the world, then it makes sense to charge twice as much as the rest of the world.

They won't be made in Japan. And the minimum wage (I believe) is lower than countries such as Sweden.

Except living costs remove that advantage quickly. Unless you're living in a tent in the outback, it's fething expensive just existing in Australia, without trying to do anything else.

Not really... try and buy electronics in Japan
Currencies exist for a reason people!! ;-) They are what you use to compare prices.

I have nearly really understood why anyone buys the bloody things anyway, surely the most paint anyone is ever going to need is about 50% of the range tops? Your average army only has 8 or 9 different colours, so unless you own pretty much everything GW have ever made, isn't it a waste of money regardless of the nation you buy it in?!
I think i've only used about 30 different paints my whole hobby career!

Thats just nuts. Does GW have the Queen herself delivering these paints?

Every time I hear "in my opinion" or "just my opinion" makes me want to strangle a puppy. People use their opinions as a shield that other poeple can't critisize and that is bs.
If you can't defend or won't defend your opinion then that "opinion" is bs. Stop trying to tip-toe and defend what you believe in. |

That price is somewhat wrong for Norway, you need to add some 250 - 300 NOK in taxes for importing the damned thing too,

This would assume you bought it at a local store (even if one didn't exist)
Otherwise America would be totally different prices (and Australia you could even increase it by 10% ) Automatically Appended Next Post: mattyrm wrote:I have nearly really understood why anyone buys the bloody things anyway, surely the most paint anyone is ever going to need is about 50% of the range tops? Depends on how much and what types of models you paint. I probably have hundreds of paints of all different types. And GW's are the ones that run out (the others are MUCH larger)

That isn't how it works..
Individual GW stores get their weekly orders from a central warehouse (here in Australia, it's in Ingleburn NSW). The central warehouse receives stock from overseas on multiple pallets. They do not pay a premium or anything like that.
GW have contracts nationally with shipping companies and do not pay anything close to what end customers do.

You also can't forget various duties, taxes etc that get charged on imports. These can range up to 25% on some items. Then there are various costs for specialized shipping. I know certain paints and aersol's have shipping restrictions in some countries.
Regardless of that fact, it's still actually cheaper for me to buy new from GW in the states that it is for me to buy from a Canadian discounter in some cases. And I feel bad for that.
