There's no sane way, apparently, to send rescuers in until tomorrow to save all those geniuses who thought being on the coast in a major hurricane was a good idea:

He definitely seems like a good choice for presidential candidate.. I'd vote for him, as I actually was able to watch that statement live.

Yeah, he put it better than Bloomberg did in NYC, who said "don't be going outside, its 'irresponsible' to do so"

Yeah, good thing Jabba the Hutt's heart won't last 'til 2016. Christie'sjust another nihilistic power-monger like Romney, bent on creating a slave-labour economy.

No he is one of the few politicians who actively cares about the safety and welfare of the people of his state first. He has always done that, he didn't pursue the vice-presidential nomination because it would have meant not being able to take care of his state. This is a disaster and he actively warned people not to take it lightly. Please if you don't live here leave your ill informed and useless comments at the door. Then, they raised prices on the Marines, and there was nobody to speak out for me.

Nah. Christie tried to claim that he had solved the unemployment problem with his incredible job-creation when in fact most of the jobs he referred to were seasonal retail slave labour. He doesn't care about anyone except for his corporate backers, and he didn't pursue a vice-presidential nomination because at the time of his decision, Romney's chances of winning were circling the drain, and he didn't want to jump on board a sinking ship (for which I do not blame him).

To claim that Christie is a great guy with the common man's best interests at heart is just naive.

Like how he connects slave labor with seasonal job. Glad I'm not a republican or he might actually think I own slaves or something.

Seasonal jobs like summer jobs at Target, or seasonal jobs like picking cotton?

Dad picked cotton for lots of Democrats. Then he got sick of it and joined the Corps and was given the opportunity to visit new and interesting places like North Korea.

Wait, you just said retail slave labor?
So in other words, your ignorance of what slaves went through has just been laid bare, if you're comparing that to working at the local mall. For shame.

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

Long hours with no realistic chance of advancement and no job security or perks for minimum wage?

I'd say it is pretty fair to call that kind of labour market as close to being slave labour as you can get these days.

Um, maybe I'm missing the point of seasonal jobs? They don't have advancement, secrurity, or perks for the very reason that they're seasonal.

You go you work for about 3-5 months for tourist season and that's it. That's the nature of the tourisim industry. That's not slave labour that's just what happens. No one is insane enough to hire staff 12 months of the year when they're going to just stand around playing their cell phones for 7-8 of those months.

The amount of first world problem thinking going on in this thread is staggering.
1. We have real slavery going on in much of North Africa. Sudan is an excellent example.
2. Near slavery of maids of other workers by the wealthy in the Middle East. Their passports are seized and they cannot report the harm.
3. In many, if not most of the world, child labor still exists. You're comparing a stint at Taco Bell to an 8 year old having to work ten hours a day in a sweat shop. Again the only thing I can think to say is "shame on you."
4. Sex slavery rings globally, including Europe, the US, Asia, well everywhere.
5. Just the simple comparison I noted above. If you think working in retail is hard you don't have a fething brain in your head. Spend a season picking cotton, your hands bloody, your back permanently harmed. The come cryin me about how hard it is being a soda jerk at Orange Julius.

I don't know if you have ever worked in seasonal jobs, but especially in retail they can be brutal jobs paying virtually nothing and with a potentially very high turnover rate (because there are lots of people who are looking for work - if your boss doesn't like you, you are gone, if you don't meet the insane targets you are gone, etc...).

Eternal Plague

There are differences across the pond as to how jobs are viewed.

Suffice to say, American's concept of lower paying jobs offer no job security, benefits, or advancement. On the other hand, many of those jobs are menial and typically are not meant to be kept forever.

I'd certainly not want to be the fry cook of a McDonald's for 30 years and be fired because I became too slow.

I'd hope that fry cook has higher aspirations, perhaps becoming a manager there one day, or using that job as a springboard for experience in the workplace or as a side job while going to college or to supplement another job.

Of course, I have worked retail since I was 16 starting as a seasonal employee of a local water park. The pay was dirt but I was a kid and didn't need a really fancy job. I worked my way up the ladder of the retail industry and now sit on a store manager job.

Experience and drive helps get you there.

Surprisingly we are talking about a supposedly first world country. I'm not talking about actual slavery, it is a comparative issue with the rest of the job market of a developed nation.

I have. You're talking out of your ass again.
I whined once about working retail to Dad. Then he told me how during the summer he would work on the local farms from sunrise to sunset. He did it so he could eat. Then he was sent to an orphanage and again turned out to work on local farms from sunrise to sunset. He was 6 years old. he still had scars on his hands from it.

So with all due respect. You don't know gak.

Back in my day we worked 26 hours a day, then walked 50 miles to get home to eat grit and then went back to work again!

The kinds of people who take these jobs broadly fall into two categories; students making some extra money, or people who need the money to live. I've known people working 18 hour days just to bring in enough money to live with seasonal work, with no guarantee that they would have a job the next day, treated terribly by their employers and living quite literally hand to mouth. Just because the work has moved from the farm to the shop floor doesn't make it any less demanding.

I'm saying that it is about as close to slave labour as one can get; ie the work done and the "benefits" gained from performing that work are reasonably close to slavery, not that these positions are slavery.

I could compare these jobs to the position of CEO, or a manager, but there isn't actually all that much of a comparison between the two.

You don't even know what a hard job is, much less slavery. Grow up.

You make assumptions; your posts always attack those you disagree with rather than actually debate the points and I am not surprised that you have chosen to do so again. Far easier to argue against the person than the issue.

Then you're wrong and not just wrong, stupidly wrong.
In addition to the many examples sited. You're saying lack of time and inability to become CEO make you close to a slave. That argument, to be more polite, lacks merit or minimal logic. You're just describing contract jobs, or employing agents. They aren't meant o have even the long term relationship of a McDonald's. You're hired for a few hundred hours of labor. The people taking the jobs do so for a variety of reasons including students, and people looking for some extra income. Its free agency.

You want full time jobs with benefits, you work there. Those are the kind of jobs the US needs? Agreed. But if you're going to bitch at Christie you'd better bitch at Obama because he's crossing the coutnry making hay about the low unemployement rate based on those same crappy jobs.

I'd better back off this thread before I start saying what I really want to say.

Its a seasonal job. What do they care you'll be gone in a few months and they'll probably never see you again unless that's really the only job you can get. Which really isn't a problem with that particular employer.

I just don't see how this is a problem. Its the nature of the work. If someone doesn't know that going into it they must be pretty sheltered.

It is Jersey we're talkin' about here Fraz. I don't really know anything about New Jersey other than Housewives of Jersey and the Sopranos so I can't comment. Frankly if you're not dead already you'll be ok.

I guess the important thing to ask is, did the Bada Bum club make it?

I want to make sure I get this straight?

There was an exacuation center in Atlantic City, and the authorities told people to go there. People listened, and then, once people were there the authorities told them they should have just left anyway?

Huh, so I guess you need to know which "authorities" to listen to and which to ignore at any given time.

Someone needs to account for the veracity of this... but I think the Guv says to leave the city, but the Mayor said to go to the evac center at the same time.
