so reading the ogre FAQ.....
under the errata:
"Page 62 β Greedy Fist, second paragraph.
Change the last sentence to βIn addition, an enemy Wizard
loses a Wizard level and a randomly selected spell each time
they are hit in close combat by an Ogre wearing the Greedy
Fist.β
however in the FAQ section....
"Q: If a Wizard is hit by a ranged attack from the bearer of the
Greedy Fist, does it lose a Wizard Level? (p62)
A: Yes."
so um.... wich is it? one obviously allows ranged attacks / magic the other disallows it by saying "close combat" ..... i is comfuzzlued

The errata means the question would no longer be asked - as it specifies close combat.
Ignore the ranged entry.

Looks like they also forgot to delete the info that shouldn't be there.
Unless the errata just changes the wording of the army book, and the FAQ provides an answer to the question....
Very kinda confusin. Good work GW on making things harder then they need to be.

The errata would make it melee only (as I always said *cough*). The FAQ doesn't even make sense with the new wording as it would never be asked with that errata.
It's like:
Errata
-The model's move value is zero. It cannot move.
FAQ
-Q: What happens if it moves? A: He must make a Dangerous Terrain test.

Basically, there is no contradiction. It only works in CC(actual rules change) and if for some reason the previous ruling was altered it would strip a wizard level at range.
Remember that Errata are actual rules changes. The FAQ are optional clarifications.
And what really happened was they forgot to delete that FAQ entry.

Dude, it was never worth it to begin with.
The Greedy Fist itself, however, is worth it. For +1str and a 6+ ward that eats magic weapons is well worth the price of admission. The fact it kills wizard levels is just gravy.

well i never took one only for the deathfisting... it was just a nice extra. generally i try to keep my casters out of combat if i can help it, so the str and ward save is not really being used. (at least on them) i might stick it on a tyrant tho... that could be pretty awsome.

It was just the ultra-cheese deathfisting that got nerfed. And the forum debated that for ages as well.
IMHO, most of the 8th army book items are more neat stuff than great stuff. They are the special characters of the item world.

I agree in the earlier books, but the more recent ones seem to have included more useful stuff. I routinely use 3 items from the armybook in my empire lists (Ring of Volans, Armor of Meteoric Iron, Speculum) and sometimes others, and there are a couple useful things in the vampire book as well. Clearly GW doesn't ever want to produce another Pendant of Khaeleth or Infernal Puppet, which is all to the good in my view. I agree they went too far with ogres and greenskins, whose items are absurdly gimmicky and expensive, but I like the trend I'm seeing.

Greedy Fist is good, as is the Dragonhide banner and the Gut Maw. Rune Maw is ideal for Ogre Death Stars.
O&G got the Bane Head which shows up just about every game, and Basha's Axe (+1 S +1A and armor pierce) is a solid choice.
As you pointed out, empire has some good choices, and vampires have some really good ones too.
On the other hand, I never use any of the vampire or ogre special characters, and would only consider one O&G character.
On the whole, I'd say the new items are better than the new characters.

i disagree, a Vampire character that i often employ is Manfred the acolyte with his law-master ability for a hero at only 200 points is very useful. save me having to up my vampire lords level to ensure i get the spells i need, although it does knock some of my incantations down a little (low wizard level). at-least this way you can have your vampire lord completely suped up on vampiric powers and magic items while still been in the limit of a 2000 point battle (which my club mostly plays)
