Hey guys

I just wondered what you guys think the minimum points are for a 6x4 board. We have been gaming on a 4x4 for the moment as we only had 700 points. We are now hitting 1500 and my wife will be up to 2500+ after Christmas.

Really, there is no minimum, but over 1000pts you're going to be wanting to use 6x4 IMO.

A 6x4 is best overall really. Because even at small points, you can simply not use a section of the table.

I think the upper limit for a 6x4 table is around 3500 points, above that and the table length should be increased(not width)

Think we have a while to go for that! At least with a 6x4 I should be able to keep her repeating bolt thrower at a distance not looking forward to facing that!

Bolt Throwers really arn't that scary. At 100 points they are quite overpriced. They really should be 60-75 pts and 1-2 per elite slot.

Cannons are what is scary, because they are way more accurate then Bolt Throwers and do much more damage(while not costing much more then a Bolt Thrower)

6x4 is a little of above average, I'd say anywhere between 1500-2000. If you have a lot of unpassable terrain (rivers, lakes) it could cut it down, but it could be bigger if it's mostly plains.

Well had a game, the bigger board made it more interesting in terms of movement and well her bolt thrower wasnt that bad at all. It spent most of its time shooting Volleys at my Chaos Knights that and didnt kill any of them. She would have been better off trying to snipe my mages or chaos lord.

No, 6x4 is the standard recommended table size for most average points levels. Has been for a long time now.

My bad, I'm used to my 4x4 board. It was the standard a while ago.

I've been playing for years, I never remember 4x4 being standard. Ever.

I use the same board for 40k. And for that, yes I still have 2nd or 3rd edition.

and I thought average board size was the same for both games.

4x4 was the standard in 2nd edition 40k and... 5th edition? Fantasy. They increased the standard in 3rd edition 40k and the corresponding Fantasy edition due to increasing army sizes.
