Well, at the risk of opening up this thread to the possibility of going off-topic, I am going to throw up a song by a Christian performer (aka: it's full of talking about God and Heaven and stuff )

This whole album is the most emotionally raw piece of music I have ever heard. His young daughter was accidentally run over in his driveway and died and this whole album is basically him working through the pain.

Right now my top three are
Hurt Johnny Cash (NIN can suck it)
Dirty Old Town The Pogues
Wish You Were Here Pink Floyd

Something I can never have by NIN is probably the most moving song I have.

Just the lonely keyboard accompanying the vocals - it has a haunting quality and was about as different from Sin and Head like a hole as he got at the time - before he got all emo.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

First one that came to mind (barring... well, Xasthur's complete discography), but there's loads of sad songs that I happen to enjoy.

EDIT: Oh, and this is one of those songs I love that I would never admit to liking. Except I just did, so... there's that.

I love sad songs lol. A good one sung with pure emotion is so good to listen to, whatever mood I'm in.

Almost two pages in and this famous song isn't in here yet?!

I know that most people saw the show, and never really knew the words that went along with the music... Really changes the whole song.

I would have if you haven't, those songs absolutely made angel beats for me as an anime, it doesn't matter what language it is when the lyrics are that powerful.

I can safely say that Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt" is one of the most emotional things I've ever heard.

and to assist with d-usa's charge for more country in this thread:

'I know you are but what am I?' By Mogwai. Alot of their best works are sad songs though.

A little simplistic but Mogwai have a real knack for getting the most out of a couple notes.

Seeing as everyone's Nominating NIN I'll say 'A warm Place' off of Downward spira, well at least the first couple minutes. 'Track 1 Ghosts I' (what its called on my Itunes, the first song on Ghosts) is another fave.

Love that song, sad and inspiring at the same time.

My contribution, Black Boys on Mopeds by Sinead O'Connor.

We were once so close to heaven, St. Peter came out and gave us medals; declaring us "The nicest of the damned".

“Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'”
