No different than pieces of cloth with pictures of dead presidents on 'em... except I don't think there's a $4000-dollar-bill.
I mean, it's tragic, but no more so than if he were killed during a home invasion for his TV, stereo, shoebox full of money, etc.

Police estimated the collection was worth up to $100,000, including a Black Lotus card with $10,000 on its own.
That says it all. It's no different than murdering someone for their cash, which is obviously evil, but not exactly surprising.

Or more. I hate that I was too young to buy a stack of them when they were only $400, and that I didn't start playing MTG back when I first heard someone talking about it and how it's insane that some cards are worth a whole $20.
(Of course it's amusing how some of the cards I did get have gone up in value since then, I could easily make thousands of dollars in profit except that the cards in question have sentimental value and I'll never sell them.)

I hear ya... I was old enough to recognize that they'd increase in value, even back when it was going for $300-400; but I didn't, because it was a large investment to buy, say, 10 of 'em, and I figured that across fifteen years they'd only increase by about 20-25% (which I realize is about the best return you can get on a non-real-estate investment, but it was still a massive principle investment that I didn't exactly have just laying around). Had I any idea that the price would increase by more than 1000%, I'd have pawned everything else I owned to make that investment.

Pokemon has the most valuable card actually.
This one.
$20,000
Charizard from the first set is worth about $2-2,500.
Yu-Gi-Oh has Cyber stein, which devalued substancially from its once $1-1,500 to about $500.

Very sad day when pieces of flimsy cardboard are worth more than a mans life.
I think that humanity is moving up . First we used to murder each other for peices of paper with designs printed on them, now pieces of cardboard with designs on them...that's progress!
In a couple of years we might even, after reaching the pinnacle of civilisation kill each other for MDF!

Blue Hurricane is worth more, I think.

This is pretty sad, but agreed it's the same as murdering for a stereo or TV. Except it's far easier to get away without being suspicious-looking. Lugging a TV from somebody's house? Suspicious. Walking out the front door, waving inside to the dead guy with his valuable cards in your pockets? Not suspicious at all. My uncle has a butt-ton of dual lands...how much are they going for these days?

The Machamp 1st edition from the very first two player starter though should go for a bit if I remember right.

... Killed for wood...
Anyway, I had no idea MTG cards were worth so much. I doubt I have anything worth much but its worth looking now. I thought the expensive ones were in the $100-$200 range, which is not worth the time of seeing if I have one.

Sady not, it seems common enough and it never if i remember right got a non 1st ed print.
I'm quite glad i've collected all the sets from the beginning including the shadowless and unlimited etc. saving them all for a rainy day sale.

Story for the work blocked:
The victim was a pillar of the Magic community in the area.
We've all been there. When I was a kid, I coveted the 8-bit Nintendo systems my friends and neighbors had and the baseball cards my buddy's dad proudly displayed were worth a pretty penny. A pair of adults took those covetous thoughts for another man's collection way too far. In August, two men broke into 30 year old Sean Dugas' house in Pensacola, Florida, beat him to death and took his collection of Magic cards. Police estimated the collection was worth up to $100,000, including a Black Lotus card with $10,000 on its own.
The police have just now pieced together the chain of events. After breaking in to Dugas' house, killing him and stealing the cards, twin brothers William and Christopher Cormier took the victim's body with them. The pair buried the body in a backyard in Georgia, where they were eventually apprehended. William Cormier, 31, is charged with the murder of Dugas.
The Magic community in Pensacola is shocked. "We've been doing this for 26 years, and we've never even had a fight," said Ed Nehring, the owner of a comics and gaming store in Pensacola where Magic players sometimes congregate to play.
Many of the players in the area would consult with Dugas on strategy or to borrow cards. "He was a dominant figure in the Magic community," one of the players said. "When news came of his death, it shook all of us."
While this is certainly a tragedy, I really hope this news doesn't degrade into painting Magic as a deviant influence on our youth. In any pastime, there will be people who do bad things. That doesn't mean the activity itself is the cause.
