Why do we use Hi instead of hello? Or pie instead of honsjkam?
People make words and change them and they catch on and become new.

Hence Ye Olde now Old, blinglish is the chav side, the manga one is another subculture.

Interesting and here I thought it was to put emphasis into the "eye" part of it. Or people liked Kirby.

But remenber, for most people, they don't care, and then they look idiotic in the rare time they meet someone from Japan. Like most fanboys

I thought it was rooted in "Ohayou" which is Japanese for "Good Morning" and apparently can also work as "Hey" which is why you normally see "Hai" as "O Hai" or it's just some slowed four chan equine gak.

It's far outgrown it's origin, whatever that was. The primary reason people are using it because they saw other people using it and thought it was cool, amusing or just wanted to be part of the crowd. It's silly, harmless internet slang certainly nothing worth feeling superior over.

I personally still answer the telling-bone with "Ahoy-hoy" (it was Bell's preferred way - it fell by the wayside) - at least at home.

The mobile depends on whom is calling. there, it is usually "speak".

Lately I've snarled and said 'what now'.

Soon I'll just stop answering the damn thing and only respond to email and texts.

I still respond to most hello's with 'Morning', regardless of the time of day, it confuses the crap out of people...

I thought 'Hai' came from LolCats, you know, where we have to mis-spell every single fething word to make the pic that much cuter.

I just assumed it was phonetic spelling of the word 'hi'....

Yup, it comes from lolcats (as Albatross says,a phonetic spelling). I don't think it's originally related to any Japanese-appropriation, but I'm willing to bet it's been misinterpreted and propagated due to just that by many people.

People say yes when they see me because they know the party is about to start. And by party, I mean shenanigans. And by shenanigans, I mean Apple-tinis for everyone.

Yes

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

I have yet another possible origin for it:
It sounds much the same as some pronounciations of the swedish word for "hello" ... !
Hai - Hej (yes, several in Sweden pronounce "e" as "a" ....)

Although, "Haj" in swedish means "Shark" ...

Wait they can't? then who's been sending me those threatening messages from 'Fluffy'?

Often I greet people by saying 'easy' though I got told I should really not do that in other parts of the country.

Probably work

I'm NOT saying 'hai' for hello. 'Hey',

'hello', 'hi', 'yo', 'salutations', or the occasional 'WHAZZZZUP'? Those are all cool.

'hay guise' is situationally appropriate, as well.
