Going to buy and assemble my first army today. As a necron player will i be limited to a Green/Metalic color schemes? I was thinking of switching out the typical "green areas" with a purple. I think it would just look better. I am hoping people won't tease me if I plop down my flamboyant necrons if I go to my local hobby store. Also am I severely going against any fluff? Or is there a little wiggle room for my Blue eyed purple weapon wielding crons?

I may be a noob, but you sir are a noob hater!

They can be whatever colour you want. People just tend to stick with the green because its easy with the clear plastic.

Only person who limits your color choices is you my friend. Do a search for necrons and you'll find a skittle bag worth of color schemes out there. My one is a ceramic like tan color with silver joints and various shades of purple to represent their social status.

There where some sweet-ass necrons in the white dwarf when they came. Gold and rich colours with a little details on the helmets.

Best of luck and have fun.

I think I might! I am going to try and do a mass effect 3 reaper style for my army...But I just like purple.... So blue eyes, but everything else "reaperish" will be purple.

My favorite schemes that aren't green:

1)Brass/copper with blue.
2)Metal with parts painted alabaster/marble
3)Gloss read. Looked laquered and pretty cool.

It's spelled "cavalry." NOT "calvary."

I did mine in turquoise / gold and I love it.

Warriors can be very simple, but you might loose your mind after painting 30 or so with detail work.

I have even seen some cool "skeletal" and stone designs.

I wish you the best of luck if you're looking for plastic gauss tubes as they can be tricky to find. I also went with a purple theme for my army but I was very specific about it being a dark and deeper purpler no violet pansy stuff. The real issue I had was finding rods to my liking (I did manage to find some that were very light almost a blue). I ended up going with a purple for armor like pieces (shoulders and what not) with the occasional gold lining for more independent characters.

More to the point I'm a huge purple fan if it's done right so I look forward to seeing some pictures of your guys.

thanks, I think I might make a video diary of it, so when I am done painting you can all laugh at me and feel better about your armies! (I am not that artistic, so I am a tad concerned about how they will look)

If you check out plastruct or evergreen for colored transparent plastic rod you can have the same effect for the gausse weapons but with a different color too.

In the olden days, you were stuck with either the standard green rods or hunting down some plastruct/evergreen rod replacements as suggested by Alleton (then very very carefully chopping them into the correct lengths).

I never liked the rods - didn't mind the green but did mind the plasticky look - so assempled mine with no original rods at all:

doing something similar is even easier with the new Necron models, as little of the current range even uses the rods.

If you don't like the green plastic rods, you can always take the bits route and do this:

You need only a necron warrior kit and the guns from a Necron Ghost Ark which you can get from an online bits seller. Oh, you also need tools and glue. But you already knew that, didn't you.

I think that you'll find that the people who care enough to comment on your paint scheme will probably admire that you've gone outside of the normal paint scheme...do whatever you like! While you're at it, don't paint the bodies silver! The dark future is your oyster!

Also, plastruct makes different colored transparent plasticard rod. Basically the same thing as the green-colored gauss thing, but in different colors.

Just pick something to match your scheme.

Yeah, if I was starting a necron army today, I'd do something along the lines of Breotan's conversions - gives you total independence from those clear rods.

with the new necron codex the necrons are more "ancient egyptians in space" rather then "mindless robot skeletons in space" so you can do whatever you want for a paint job...
check out my necron blog (link in my sig) for my grey and bone colored army... (only painted the doomscythe atm but ill start on my immortals soon!)

I did silver/purple crons. Because I didn't mind the rods being opaque, I just heavily painted purple over the clear rod.

Here are some of my purple'crons
people only make fun of the purple color when I'm beating them in the game. Most of the time I get compliments on the scheme.

Thanks for all the support guys and with the cute-a-crons..girl? (Love that stuff by the way. Definitely unique!) I think I found a purple/blue combo that is working pretty good. I will pistol pictures when they are done!

Metal Necrons are perfectly fine but I prefer the different colored ones personally.

Speaking of purple crons

Ok cool and with those I just cut and measure to the length of rod I need right? Are they bendy? Be cool if I could do a multi color rod by intwhining them.

A friend of mine does his necrons in a boltgun metal body, with main colours of Screamer Pink and turquoise-like colour. Here's one I painted up in his scheme as a gift:

There's a lot of room for original colours in a Necron force, as with almost every 40K army. Never feel forced into a preset colour scheme
