As it says, now that a given army can take allies, it really brings alot more variety to the different unit profiles that can show up together in a given army. What long-gone armies can reappear now that the "allies" rules exist.

The most obvious would probably be squats. Lovers of Squats have long been forced to shoehorn them into either the IG, SM, or Ork lists, none of which really covered the RT and 2nd edition Squat army lists in their entirety. Now however, an allied force of Space marines and Imperial Guard could just about cover most every Squat unit with some degree of accuracy.

Scouts for Armored Squats with Bolters
IG troopers or vets for flak armored Squats with Lasguns
SM characters for Squat exo armored characters, hearthguard, Engineer, Psykers, etc.
SM Scout bikes for Squat bikes and trikes.
Tanks and artillery from either list.

With the list above, you could create a squat army that was entirely (or nearly) WYSIWYG in terms of weapons, armor and vehicle sizes and codex/rules compliant. I assume this make a counts-as Squat army much easier to accept by those who don't look favorably on counts-as or proxy armies.

What other "squatted" forces could come back now that we have access to allies?

The 'squats' are the only 'squatted' race so far, to my knowledge...

I do know I've been attempting to bring back something that looks and works more like the 3e Daemonhunters book using a mixture of airborne Guard and Grey Knights...

Yes, but IIRC, there are a number of variant army lists that came out in supplements and in WD that were rendered invalid by codex updates.

The Tau can take IG as allies, can't they? That would allow for human auxillaries. With the new Cultists rules, Lost and the Damned can once again be done and IG allies can fill in most of the gaps. Other than that I don't know of any lists that were squatted.

The Zoat would like a word with you.

Also, considering they were originally intended as a race that served as emissarys for the 'Nids they could maybe make decent allies for the Nids and give them some of the things they are missing. Like the ability to operate defense turrets and such.

Just checked my rulebook and I gotta say I'm pretty disappointed that Tyranids can't take any allies. Makes it alot harder to bring back the Genestealer cult army list as seen in the RT Red book. Back in the day there was about as much background and army lists for them as there was for the Squats, to the point where it's really more it's own army than simply a predecessor to the Tyranids.

Maybe some contrivance of IG and Chaos demons or Chaos cultists and deomons could get you most of the way there by getting faceless human hordes, leaders with psychic powers and nasty alien close combat troops into the same list?

Thanks for posting that image! That fellow on the upper left does indeed look fairly Zoaty! lol We can dream. We can dream ...

Whoever mentioned the Gene Stealer cults had a good point too. There were some great RT/2nd ed Cult armies out there that would be great to ally with Tyranids. Anyone remember the Genestealer limo!?

'Squated' armies are those that once had rules but no longer do...

Off hand I count:
Squats
Adeptus arbites
Genestealer Cults
Zoats
Slann
Several marine chapters (founding legions, relicators, mentor legion, death watch)
Several guard regiments (Tanith, Savlar, Catachans)
KRoot mercenaries
Adeptus Mechanus
Feral orks

Some of them can be simulaed of course but any would make a cool ally force.

I think you can add Imperial Guard Armored Company (everything in tanks) to that. They had their own official Minidex in white dwarf. Twice I think...

I have a copy somewhere. it was pretty cool to see official (not FW) 40k stats for all the chimera variants.

Of course Allies aren't going to help recreate that one.

The ruins of the Palace of Thorns

Not quite the same thing, but...

You could already do a fairly convincing Skaven army using either Dark Eldar or Eldar. Now that you can use both, your Skaven can be doubly convincing.

Though guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.

Hiding in a dark alley with a sharp knife!

none of which really covered the RT and 2nd edition Squat army lists in their entirety.

I find that if you ignore the increased armour save issue, you can pretty much replicate the RT Squat list using the Space Wolf Codex. That's how I tend to run my Squats these days.

I did run a bunch of them in a CSM army a couple of weeks ago as Chaos Cultists with the mark of Nurgle.

On the overall subject, I have the only full sized Space Slann army that I have ever seen. I've always run it using the Necron codex. (high tech aliens and such...) Another option for them might be using them as "counts as Orks" given that the Slann originall had a stat line quite similar to what the Orks have today. (t-4, bs-2, etc) Of course given that original Slann figures run about 30$ a piece on the collector's market, that makes for an awful expensive horde! But that's the great thing about having Space Slann. They were never fleshed out as an army. Their entire pressence in 40k amounts to about 4 pages in the RT book. So you can use them for anything!

Given that Sisters of Battle are all but dead as a supported faction, their players might look at "counts as" options as well. Pick your favorite Space Marine codex and go for it!
