After finally finishing my crons army Im now looking at building my second army . I love the idea of a monster army but as my friend has just started his nidzilla list I thought id play around with a new idea.

Before i even think about buying the dexs i thought i d get opinions. The army would be a blood angels army with space wolves allies. Heres a quick list :-

blood angels

elites 3 x crazy dreads (plus i think the brain puncher dread)

heavy support 3 x dreads

wolves allies

hq dread

1 x heavy support

thats 8 dreadnaughts in one army, of course the list will need filling out what do you think??

Actually thought about this. In a pure blood angels army the most dreads you can get in one list is 11. that is 3 elites, 5 troops (deathcompany dreads), and 3 heavies. that requires you to have a 25 man death company unit though and you will have zero scoring units, but more dreads than your opponent knows what to do with. in a double detachment list it's even sillier with 22 possible dreads.

What sort of points are we looking at with dreads tho i.e roughly how many can you fit into a 2000 point list?

apologies for such a basic question I'm a crons player :-\

Well, i won't give the point break downs but to get all 11 dreads in at base cost with no upgrades is 1815. that is all 11 of the dreads plus the 25 deathcompany needed for the 5 troop dreads. leaves some points for hq and upgrades in a 2k list.

You can also do an ultradread list with vanilla marines.

I played a doubles game once with a person who, at 1250 points, had a master of the forge with conversion beamer, 2 small tac squads, 2 heavy bolter speeders, and 6 dreadnoughts with various upgrades.

You don't play dreadnought armies to win, you play them to be fun. There will be certain things that just make you auto-lose and certain things that you will auto-win against. It's a very lopsided army and not meant to be very good.

The Twilight Zone

Large squads of wytches would surely be a problem, but a small squad can be stopped by a measly heavy flamer overwatch. Just keep a HF on each dread, and 5 body wytch squads assaulting you with haywires are dead. 10 man squads can be shot down as priority targets, and then your fine.

The most important rule of 40K-Page XVII of the 6th edition rulebook, the figure at the top right of the page. "Shake hands with your opponent and thank them for a good battle and fun experience." Then go out for a beer.

Nonbeing, that is to say, everything.

Here is a list i found somewhere...

HQ: Captain Tycho (probably Death Company version)
* He is here for his Special Issue Ammo choices.

Troops:
Death Company:
x24 Death Company w/ Bolter & Chainsword
x1 Death Company w/ Bolter & Power Weapon

x5 Death Company Dreadnought
w/ Blood Talons (Melta Gun / Heavy Flamer) & Magna Grapples
+ Drop Pod

Heavy:
x3 Dreadnought w/ x2 Twin Autocannons

Elite
x3 Furioso Librarians
(All w/ Wings of Sang -
1 w/ Sanguine Sword, Unleash Rage, Might of Heroes)

2500 on the nose =D

It could be good with decent tactics...

Does anyone like the wolves hq dread? think his name is fellhand?

His name is Bjorn the Fell-Handed, aka Bjorn the Unstoppable Murder Machine

I think he's awesome, and nigh-indestructible in CC. Probably not worth his downright silly points cost, but he's a lot of fun to play.

Regular dreads are boring. What you need is Contemptor dreads!

Using the DA Codex (because why take boring power armor troops when you can take tactical dreadnought armor?):

HQ: Belial

Troops: Deathwing terminators

Elite: Contemptor dreads

Heavy: Contemptor mortis dreads

For best results make your terminators out of the FW kits so they look like mini Contemptors.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

The fun side is what im looking for, something just to say RAAAAAAARRRR and have a smash up!!

just had acouple random thought tho:

Can a furioso dread with talons assault from a drop pod?

how viable is a grey knights dread list with dread knights?

Genestealers eat Dreads as well... (At least with my friend rolling he never fails to get enough rending to kill whatever he needs to)

Dreads are fun though. As to your latest questions, nothing can assault from Drop Pods, nothing what so ever.

Dreadknigts are expensive, so if you wanted 3 and 3 elite Dreads you'd be low on troops again. But Dreadknights are tough and can do very well.

And Peregrine, remember to rob a bank before starting that army

With Grey Knights, you can take a Grand Master for extra scoring units. So the expense is less of an issue.

Just offering a xenos scum (orks) alternative:
(Note, no points because I'm lazy and don't take my codex to work with me)

HQ
2x KFF big mek with stuff
2x Deffdread (Troops)
9x Killa Kanz

Also, if you take double FoC
4x Big Mek
4x Deffdread
18x Killa Kanz
(admittedly this is a ridiculous amount of points and money, but it would be a damn fun list to play!)

Oh yeah I forgot he can make the Dreads/knights scoring.
A Grandmaster, 3 Ven Dreads, 2 GK Strike squads & 3 Dreadknights is 1290 points without upgrades, so if you're playing 1750-2000+ then it could work, 1500 its going to be tight getting the upgrades you need to make the Knights and Vens effective and you need something on the Grandmaster really. Or you swap GK Strike SQuads for inquisitor and henchmen, without any upgrades thats 1139 points

2 suggestions:

-Lucius drop-pods! So you can assault as soon as you drop (if you have Ironclads you can't even get immobilized)

-Bray'Arth Ashmantle is a uber dread from FW, AV13 front and sides, absolutely no double-tap allowed to pen (no melta, no rending, no armourbane, no nothing). He's a Venerable Dread HQ for a SM army (fits in great with Salamanders)
