"On the Mikoyan MiG-27 the Gsh-6-30 had to be mounted obliquely to absorb recoil (5,500 kg). The gun was noted for its high (often uncomfortable) vibration and extreme noise. The airframe vibration lead to fatigue cracks in fuel tanks, numerous radio and avionics failures, the necessity of using runways with floodlights for night flights (as the landing lights would often be destroyed), tearing or jamming of the forward landing gear doors (leading to at least three crash landings), cracking of the reflector gunsight, an accidental jettisoning of the cockpit canopy and at least one case of the instrument panel falling off in flight. The number of fragments from detonating shells was sufficient to damage aircraft firing (or flying) within 200 metres of the impact area."

Sounds like the dark age of technology is right around the corner then.

I mean we already have real tank hammers, and battlewagons...

Wait, what were we talking about again? Did I ever tell you about the time I gave you five bees for a quarter? That's what you'd say in those days, "give me five bees for a quarter", is what you'd say in those days. And you'd go down to the D&D shop, with an onion in your belt, 'cause that was the style of the time. So there I was in the D&D shop..."

Holy crap yes please! lol that was great! thanks!

Also, in regards to the thread title, I remember seeing a documentary on the Mikoyan Design Bureau (the designers of the MiG jets) where one of the engineers stated that since their country was so huge and mid-air refueling wasn't an option at the time that they knew they would occasionally have to send pilots up in jets (this was the early ones like the MiG-16/17) that they knew could not carry enough fuel to get to where they needed to go. To account for that they simply designed the jets to crash land as safely and easily as possible. Orky optimism for the win! lol

Odd that the Russians had so many problems with it. The gun is slightly weaker than the GAU-8 carried by the A-10 Warthog, and, as far as I know, the A-10 has none of those problems. I guess their recoil compensators were just really lousy. So very orky!

Or the US engineers are just really good at hiding their problems...
