Subject: Price estimation for the Smaug miniature (movie spoiler warning... sort of)

Those who have seen the movie should have an indication about the size of this mofo. It will be interesting to see the price tag GW is going to put on the miniature once it gets released.
- He should be at least the same size as a Mumak (although obviously differently shaped).
- We will be a year further down the road, and things usually do not get cheaper when time goes bye, especially when GW is involved.
- He is a unique, which often has a "unique tax" attached because people only need to buy just one kit.
- The Hobbit stuff seems to be quite steeply priced already, even for GW standards.
- How well/poor the current new Hobbit stuff sells could affect future pricing decisions.
So taking all of this into account will the price estimate be (about) the same, (significantly) higher or lower than the Mumak's price? Over/under eighty euros/a hundred dollars?
I'm also curious how powerful he will be on the tabletop, giving the fact that he defeated an entire mountain full of armed-to-the-teeth dwarves in the movie.

The only chance it has to be cheaper is if the cost of the initial Hobbit line completely drives away anyone looking to get into it (even then GW might not understand the error of their ways and make it more expensive to try and milk as much as they can out of the 100 people who buy it).
Funnily enough that has been the case at my FLGS (dunno about the local GW though), there were people interested (myself included) but it's simply too expensive.

The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that. |

I doubt GW will make a Smaug model as Smaug doesn't have rules in The Hobbit.
Although if they did I would say it would probably around the the size of the current Dragon.

Absolutely no way he is the same size as the current dragon. The current dragon is quite small while judging by what we did see in the movie Smaug is HUGE.
And rumours say that each movie will get a new rulebook released by GW to milk them wallets even more

I voted over. There's no way they make it cheaper than the Mumak.
Besides, and correct me if I'm wrong, the Mumak is pretty cheap by GW standards, isn't it?

That's how they did it for LotR.
There will be a new rulebook with each movie, there will be very little changes if any and it probably won't even be necessary to get the latest edition (like 40k or WHFB) but GW will never actually say as much.
They will do a Smaug though, they can't not. He will probably be saved for the first wave of the last movie though and he will probably be a very nice massive plastic model that costs $220AU/$120ish US/60 pounds.

It is. Only gone up £10 since it first came out IIRC.
Seeing as GW's watchword with The Hobbit minis are price gouging then I expect the price on this to have a gouge so deep it'll resemble the laurentian abyss.

Btw I have to admit that those battle scenes with the Dwarf army make me want to start a Dwarf army of some sort

That's the thing though, the although there is a dragon model for Lotr, there was no dragon in the movies so we have nothing to compare it to, unless someone does a little camera trickery to compare The Balrog to Smaug.

The thing will probably be around 80-100$. I mean, if the three trolls are around 80, you gotta figure he will at least cost that much.

This si sarcasm, right? I can't tell over the internet, but I can't imagine you're serious.
On the off chance that you are serious, that logic is about as valid as saying, " GW has the rights to Star Wars now, but they won't make a Darth Vader mini because I haven't seen rules for him yet." GW might as well place incendiary devices in all their cash safes if they hate money that much.
Heck, I would love to hear them explain to the shareholders why they thought making the most famous dragon in Fantasy fandom, and the big draw to an epic blockbuster series, would be a waste of time. "We don't know if dragon fans buy miniatures. Quite frankly, we don't want to know. It's a market we can do without."
Man, the more I type, the more it sounds like something GW would do...
Although if they did I would say it would probably around the the size of the current Dragon.
I'm sure it would be bigger than that. They'd be crazy not to make him in plastic, and if they get him to be Stompa sized, excluding wingspan, they can easily charge $200+ for him while their customers line up around the block to proclaim their genius.
