Subject: Too "nice" looking for 40k?

I am working on a space marine army and these are the planned bases. Custom cut 16 gauge steel for weight and solid short base with cork, static grass, and battlefields' flowers.
The wife liked it, but thought it was "too nice for 40k" and that it would be more befitting for warhammer fantasy or hordes miniatures.
Pairing this up with a Celestial Lion chapter paint scheme (with dark metallic blue), do you think it would be too oddly matched up?

It's definitely fine for me.
Battles in the 40k universe occur on loads of terrain types. And before a battlefield is turned to ashes wasteland, it might have been a prosperous city, a millenary forest, or a nice meadow.
It would require a corresponding boardgame though.

It looks really good. You could easily mix it up with having some of the bases scorched and cratered.

Thank you. I did not think of this and I think that will work well with the larger termie, drednaught, and storm talon bases.

They look great mate, if you want to "40kerise" it, you could add stuff to make it look like there's been some combat around, but not enough to completely despoil it. Perhaps muddy patches with boot prints, some cast off (rusty?) equipment or severed body parts with nice blood effects (tamiya clear red etc). Hopefully you'll get the best of both worlds - your gorgeous bases, and a 40k feel.

I think it looks pretty great. It almost looks like rubble from a previous battle that time has revived, but another battle will soon add more debris to it. You could have parts of walls, ruins or debris with grass and flowers on top of it.

Looks great. And the greens will work with the blues nicely.
2 Suggestions on the base:
1 - Undercoat the metal before basing it. It'll seal it, helping to stop rust, and make it look neater.
2 - Linked to 1: Paint the rim of the base black (or white)(or a colour for squads)
Like has been said above - some craters and battle damage here and there would be a nice touch.
Also, as a thought you could have it as an 'old battleground', with subtle touches, like the tip of a skeletal hand poking through the dirt here, a skull mostly obscures by grass there, helmet covered in dust with some old brown bloodstains on it, bent rusted lasguns poking out of the ground or something, etc.
But great work - wish mine looked that good.

Maybe "trample" the grass and flowers underfoot. You still have the "beauty" of the earth, but the "ugliness" of battle mixed together.

Would work great for Tyranids! Tyranids make the flowers grow; I'm seeing maybe an agri-world in the early stages of an invasion? Before the plants go completely insane?

On one of the bigger bases you could try having a burnt footprint or two in the middle of the flowers, all subtle-like.

I will look into implementing some of these ideas and posting up some more pictures, any other suggestions?

You should model a space marine laying down, smelling some flowers, all zenned out.

Ha. That would be interesting.
I guess it would be a bit funny to make a terminator that is carrying a flower pot or something.

I wouldn't worry, it looks good to me. I think 40k terrain suffers from Star Wars syndrome, i.e. the whole planet looks the same, and I don't get why everyone would be fighting round empty ruins in a blasted landscape with no vegetation, other than that it's easier to model. I want to do a jungle at some point with lots of different plants or the sort of place that would be worth fighting over and hasn't already been reduced to rubble.

I think it's prefect. The 40k universe is a vast place and there should be some ground somewhere that isn't urban rubble or desert.
