September 6th, 2013 will give you your fill of desperately needed Vin Deisel, and in IMAX no less.
Plot Summary:The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty.
The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal. With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won’t leave the planet without Riddick’s head as their trophy.
|
Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

I hope they just pretend Chronicles of Riddick never happened. Horrible movie. A more Pitch Black style chase movie now. That'll be a bit more interesting.

I loved Pitch Black. It was visually stunning, lots of great ideas and I enjoy the Riddick character a great deal.
I am greatly looking forward to this new film and the hopeful relaunch of the franchise.

Yeah, I really liked Pitch Black as well. And then Chronicles of Riddick came along, one of those rare sequels that not only sucks, but makes you notice all the flaws in the original that you hadn't noticed previously.
Hopefully this will go back to what made the original strong - a grounded, fairly believable world, and great visuals. Hopefully they ditch all the epic fantasy in space stuff.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

A more gritty morally ambiguous Riddick (you know what made his character awesome in the first place) would also be nice.

I didn't particularly mind Chronicles.
The plot sounds a lot like Pitch Bright.

Meh, I didn't hate Chronicles. It had some cool moments and ideas... but yeah, Pitch Black was significantly better. This sounds cool.

Apparently Carl Urban's character from Chronicle's is making an appearance, I'm assuming that's who the second captain referenced is.
My guess is that Riddick told the necro's to go home, and went back to his solitary emo life.

w000t! love the Riddick movies & universe, yeah I'm not really sure what they were going with in chronicles, so I'm guessing this one takes place somwhere before pitch black.
'Second Merc Captain'
It's quite obviously going to be Toombes, he's been hunting Riddick since before pitch black (he just happens to be in cryo during pitch black, gets defrosted in Dark Fury) and IIRC didn't die in chronicles so he'll be back.
Also
A more gritty morally ambiguous Riddick
I think he still is morally ambiguous, he just lives by a moral code that he defines himself, I think he just ends up being the hero by coincidence (e.g. he defeats the necromongers not really to save the universe, but more because he has a bone to pick with the lord marshal), rather than actively being a paragon of good.

As it was related to me, this is back to being an R rated film, not a PG-13.

Nah. In Chronicles Riddick was a very typical Anti-Hero. Sure he's a little mean, doesn't have a problem killing people, but at the end of the day isn't such a bad guy. Boring.
Pitch Black's Riddick was much more interesting because it was harder to tell what he'd do at any given time. One of the coolest subtexts in the film was the juxtaposition of Riddick and the monsters and the crew caught between having to rely on Riddick to survive in the dark. It made for a much more compelling dynamic than "bad ass saves the galaxy."
If anything Chronicles probably suffered more from lost expectations than anything. People were expecting Pitch Black II, not typical Dungeons and Dragons plot #5 in Space. The tea cup scene remains one of my favorite movie moments ever

Good point, but I think Dark Fury was more the tipping point between 'unpredictable badass' and 'anti-hero' versions of Riddick (although it explains what happens between Pitch Black and Chronices nicely). I think greatest incongruity between the character and the movies is that Riddick is not the hero by his own volition, he doesn't want to be the man of the hour, but somehow he always ends up saving the day, even if all he wants to do is carry on drifting through the universe, abiding by a code of conduct he defines himself on-the-fly, but the movies do a bad job of putting him in the situation, so it ends up looking like he is saving the universe from the bad guy, instead of just ending up saving the world as a by-product of some beef he has with the evil overlord... I also think whereas Pitch Black slightly grazed the fact that Riddick still has some elements of humanity still buried deep in his psyche (his lament that the lead female dies to save him (an amoral criminal killing machine by his own definition), and the fact that he doesn't abandon the Imam and Jack, despite the fact that they would cause him trouble later on in the journey), Chronicles went off the deep-end a little on the whole 'does Riddick feel Human?' side of it.
