Well, checked on YouTube to see what would happen to all of the crazy end of the world videos (2012 was supposed to be the real "ZOMG FOR THE REAL DIS TIEM FOLKS!" apocalypse, more so than the others) and...
Now they're claiming it will be 2018.
Humanity's obsession with impending doom depresses me.

I'll have to lie! I probably slept through most of them, or at least their supposed beginnings, and that's hardly heroic!

Pfft, this was nothing compared to the Millenium Bug.
Back in my day, we had "real" almost apocalypses! You youngsters don't even know how to have a proper almost-apocalypse anymore, and probably wouldn't appreciate one done right anyway!

It's like that all the time. I always imagine him just before the taping, crazily running his fingers through it while going "Whoop, whoop, whoop!" like a Curly the stooge.
He's also the basis of my friends joke about how if you hear something start with "Obviously" you can tune out because the rest is going to be complete BS. I believe he was talking about the 2012 apocolypse as actually being a date marked by the Mayans as when they come back in their starships.

Grey Templar wrote:The Mayan's never predicted the end of the world. It was simply the end of a calander. No different to what we do every Dec 31st. its just instead of being 365 days long their calander was over 5000 years long.
They actually abandoned this particular calander before Europeans arrived, which means some guy had the brilliant revelation that you really don't need to map out the days for several thousands of years. I'd like to think the whole 5000 year calander was some practical joke some bored Mayan scholar came up with that the entire civilization picked up and ran with.
The idea that the world would end at the end of the long cycle was predicated on the idea that the world had been created at the beginning of the long cycle. Since we now know otherwise (even Biblical Literalist believe the world is over 6000 years old, and the rest of us accept it is MUCH older), the idea that the world would end at the end of the long cycle SHOULD HAVE BEEN ludicrous.
And yet somehow...

Then a devil shiftin' director in the Hollywood got an idea to squeeze every cents out of every Theatres and Cinemae in every city in the world. he knew 21st Dec 2012 is NOT the end of the world.
and he also knew that 'Mayan calendar' myth is more than a marketing tool for them. much of the world is fooled by such myth.
Mayans did indeed believes in the 'fifth world'. oddly, their "Long count' calendar appears to coincide with Dharmic cosmology of the Indian subcontinent and the far east... the Earth is ancient beyond a feeble mind of the brightest scientist.
By the time Conquistadores began its conquest of the South America. did they had been told the same 'end of the world' propherchies from any Mayans they've been encountered?

Could be that the Mayans was referring to the end of their world at 2012, after all they never said who's or what world would end or went into details on that part.
For an example, when Rome feel it was the end of their world yet not the end of Earth as we know it so that when some says that the world will end it can have several meanings to it.

It's largely a 'misunderstanding' thing IIRC.
The Mayan long count, which runs out at a b'ak'tun (sp?) ran out on 21/12/2012, now then, b'ak'tun was roughly interpreted as meaning 'end of an age', as in, the 4th age has ended, and we are now in the 5th age, but nothing is mentioned about the world ending last week (in fact, the Mayans themselves made predictions about the glory of their civilisation dating as far forward as ~4000ad, it just meant that we are in a new age (was a cause for celebration like the millenium, but not a literal age-ending).
however, some git misinterpreted it as meaning the whole fire-and-brimstone-and-blizzards-in-deserts-and-tornados-in-the-artic-oh-my thing, and well, sensationalism always wins out to historical accuracy...

The Mayans did not say it would be the end of the world, it would be a new age of enlightenment.... I can't believe a majority of society actually believed it or made jokes about it before researching it... Me included, unfortunately. Oh well, 2012 should now be classed as a Comedy Movie.
