Subject: IG blobs + gate of infinity?

I had a thought tonight that involves a 50 man IG blob, a SM librarian with GoI, and locator beacons. Is there any way this could work? I really want there to be 51 man squads of imperial guard teleporting around the battlefield.
So Here's what I see as some advantages of doing this.
1) you don't have to worry about your transport getting blown up
2) you can potentially move in one turn a great deal further than one would be able to in a turn normally, allowing you to put a ton of troop choices near, or on, an objective and get there relatively unscathed
3) an average run move will give you a 3.5 inch spread, so your massive blob can spread out before being shelled to death
4) a 50 man squad will, believe it or not, have a smaller than 4" radius footprint (i checked) meaning that you'll still be in range of a locator beacon (although the proximity to a locator beacon vehicle will hamper your run move slightly)
so.. yeah... for a minimum of 145 extra points (librarian + drop pod with locator beacon) you can have your blobs zipping around the battlefield at 27.5 inches per turn. worth it?

Sure it can be done!
But keep in mind that the beacon has to be on table at the start of te turn before you use it

Umm, squads of 50 might be a bit much. As mentioned, it would get pretty cramped in there. I could see something like this for a more reasonably sized group of guardsmen, though.
Probably the best use I can think of this is to be an objective taker. I've found that my opponents will usually leave at least one backfield objective rather sparsely held, relying on cheap units taking GTG cover saves. In this case, you have 30 guardsmen with 3 flamers. They show up, clear the objective, and then score the objective themselves with 30 dudes.
That said, you have other options for this, for example, gating a 4x flamer PCS (who can then issue an order on himself for better cover saves), or an SWS with three demo charges (SURPRISE!). Also, you can run vets, who can take carapace armor and a heavy flamer (or a single demo charge, and the sarge can take a power fist to boot), and, obviously, all of this flamer talk can be swapped out for any other special weapon type if you're more concerned about something else.

Why would you buy a power fist when you could get a power axe for 5 points cheaper? With the extra attack you'll retain from your laspistol, the power fist is a poor choice all around.
Of course, assaulting veterans are a poor choice all around to start with...

Thats a damn cool idea, and a squad of 50 dudes turning up really does the name justice. Its not called gate of no more than 10 at a time please max weight 650kg after all!

Wouldn't a single large blast, even low strength, be enough to destroy the blob?
Even devestators with missile launchers will cut a swathe through them, more so than blobs usually.

I assume he's going to use assault blobs, in which case they can use their run move. I'd say there's little chance of them ever making it to a location without some sort of impassable terrain.
Not to mention, I'd hate to move 50 models around the table like that. "Ok I broke 5/50 this time, hopefully next time they'll mishap so I can just put them back in the case and get it over with."

Absolutely right, which is why i was envisioning that, usually, you'd forgo your shooting for that turn in order to have them use their run move to split up as much as they could. Also possible that you'll be able to find places that are out of LOS of your opponents AOE anti-horde guns. Finally, it's possible that you could make that librarian an epistolary to get force dome. That seems like points poorly spent but still

The footprint for 50 guys is surprisingly small. you need around 8x8 inches of clear space and then you're totally good. As Ailaros pointed out however, it doesn't necessarily need to be 50 guys
I have no idea what one would use, part of the idea of this thread was to have that question answered
Not to mention, I'd hate to move 50 models around the table like that. "Ok I broke 5/50 this time, hopefully next time they'll mishap so I can just put them back in the case and get it over with."
why would they be hard to move around?

Taking an HQ and hoping to roll a power on a 1/6 chance is never a good idea.
Ever.

Can't librarians just take gate, though? It's a codex power, right?
As for power fist vs. power axe, the power fist is way, way better. Both are I1 and Ap2, but the +1A of the axe is crappy in comparison to wound almost all infantry on 2+, and being able to seriously threaten MCs and vehicles.

If you want the threaten monsters, buy the blob krak grenades.
If you are going the gate mob, might as well cram in as many guys as you can. 2 engineers, 2 priests, 5 commissars, commissar lord and primaris psyker, along with attached allied HQ, 62 models. Can anyone else join the party?

Yeah, it's a codex power, and the only way that a ploy like this would work i think. I can't imagine that you'd be able to take enough psykers to ensure that you could get gate, and even if you could, it would probably be an awful idea.

Ailaros, if you think two S6 attacks per turn is enough to "seriously threaten MCs and vehicles", I think I might have figured out why you're having such miserable luck in 6th edition...

Maybe he's thinking of PF effectiveness like a SM player would.
Easy to forget that PF's are only s6 for guard.
