I stopped into the FLGS yesterday and was talking with the people there and they claimed that if the only thing you have left on the board is a flyer that you auto lose at the end of the game turn, they couldn't find the relevant rule but we didn't have long to look. Is this true?

This isn't something ridiculous like "they're floating above the board not on it" is it?
If they're on the board, you have a model on the board.

I guess they could mean that it isn't a model on the board due to being on a flying base although a skimmer would be the same since they are both on 'flying bases'.

Maybe they are taking 'feet on the ground' as a literal meaning for 'on the board'?

The rulebook states you lose if you have nothing on the table. I don't see why flyers wouldn't count (though I don't have the rulebook with me.)

Though it would be funny to watch them tell a raider, venom, hellion heavy Dark Eldar player they autolose...

That was part of the argument.

It was a ridiculous argument then. If the model is physically on the gaming table (e.g. the base is resting on the table and terrain), then it is on the table. The argument your opponent was making is so literal that it would also mean that a squad on a piece of terrain wouldn't count as 'on the table' either. I mean, they are on a hill, not the table...

They were making the argument that they are not on the board they are way above it, and trying to back it up with that if there are only fliers there are no boots on the ground to hold things. they were claiming it might have been something in an FAQ.

I was not sure how much I believed it but I wanted to be sure, so if they try to claim it at a tournament I wasn't missing something.

They're possibly misinterpreting these two entries from the FAQ:
Q: If you leave combat airspace with all of your Flyers and have no other models on the gaming board at the beginning of your opponent's turn, do you automatically lose the game? (p122)
A: Yes.
Q: If all of my units are either Flyers or embarked upon Flyers, will I automatically lose the game as there are none of my models on the gaming board at the end of Turn 1? (p122)
A: Yes.

...which deals with only having flyers that are not actually on the table...

I see where the issue came up if that's what they read, I bet this misunderstood the 2nd part and thought it was referring to if all you have on the table is fliers you auto lose not if all your models start the game in flyers or as flyers in reserve you auto lose.

Though convincing them that they read it wrong will be a real pain in the ***.

Just remind them that their models "boots on the ground" are on bases as well.
Only some vehicles don't have bases.

It's not really an argument, as someone was just horrendously wrong.

Point out the first one to them:

Q: If you leave combat airspace with all of your Flyers and have no other models on the gaming board at the beginning of your opponent's turn, do you automatically lose the game? (p122)
A: Yes.

Emphasize the "AND have no other models on the gaming board" part- which demonstrates that if the flyers have NOT left combat airspace, you do not lose the game. If they still don't get it, just write them off. The are too stupid to play with in the first place.

I believe the problem comes from them reading the following as a separate part of the rule that says that if all you have left on the board is flyers you lose.

Q: If all of my units are either Flyers or embarked upon Flyers, will I automatically lose the game as there are none of my models on the gaming board at the end of Turn 1? (p122)
A: Yes.

They are missing the intent behind the question to say if you start everything in reserves in flyers that you lose as a rule saying that if all you have are flyers even if they are on the board that you lose.

This is wrong, if the flyer moves into continuing reserves and you have nothing on the board you do indeed lose, however, if the flyer is on the board you have a model on the board and continue the game.

Probably this. FAQ entry doesn't bother to repeat that the reason why one doesn't have any models on the gaming board on the following scenario: Which is that Flyers always start the game in Reserve and can thus only come to the board during turn 2 or later.

I've seen a game where the flyer was in reserves and the opponent was nearly tabled at the end of the 1st round due..one model was left on the table. Was pretty funny.

Not sure this was needed.

On topic however, that seems like a slight confusion on their part. I would hesitate to assume they were twisting an explanation or taking you for a ride knee, but you probably know them better.
