Subject: The ork Horde (From start to end of my returning army into 40k) - Conversions and scratchbuilts

Hey guys,
I had been planning a return to the 40k and gaming scene for awhile, I then stumbled upon Dakka Dakka and was truely inspired, from that point on I knew I wanted my entire army to be made from conversions and scratch builts, I wanted a totally personalised and custom army..... Therefore, Orks were the natural choice.
I have never written a blog before, but some of the blogs on here were so inspiring I thought it only fair that I returned the contributions. I shall be adding and updating with regular WIPs, and with my views of the builds and problems encountered, in hopes to inspire others.
Any tips or critisms please share, I am eager to improve. Also, not sure quite how this blog thing works and how I make sure my pics appear between text? like so I can continue after a photo. I shall ask on the forums in a mo.
The Horde background:
This horde is no ordinary horde, they are not mustered and called together under a Waaaaaaghhhh! they are a permanent waaaaghh, a waagghhh where rank is not based upon the orks size, but on who is the most killy, the craziest and the most inventive. every battle the horde rises to out do each other in the killing, using anything they can get their hands on and the wackiest devices to slay their foes.
It is to this end that every ork will be converted and scratch built with crazy, flamboyant contraptions. I also from previous experiences understand how expensive the kits can be, so I have attempted to cut costs, converting a large amount of models up from the standard boyz kit using platicard and green stuff, wires and bits and bobs. The horde is meant to be playable, so I keep the stats and rules in mind.
As I am eager to get back to modelling i'll just start adding my WIPS!!!!
ORK BOYZ NOB
this is my first conversion to ease myself in, standard parts used from my chaos spares from my old army.
Ok, got a handle on how the blog works now, so il be using a better format from now on.

This is my first scratch built Meganob. I used a standard ork boy as I did not want to buy the expensive model kit for them.
I used plasticard in order to create shapes around the orks body, starting with a basic shell around the feet, lower torso and the body. From there I then added and worked on the detail. I created the face gaurd by using stripes of plasticard which I pre-bent/curved and glued and held in place, adding new strips on top to create the overlapping effect.

This was my first time working with plasticard and I felt it a very versatile material as long as you have a variety of types. I currently have sheets, tubes and square section. on these forums I found some very useful tips which I would like to re-enforce.
Tips:
- using over large pieces of plasticard to create boxes and then trim then down square after was a great help. It meant I did not have to worry about the sides being perfectly shaped at the start and gave me room to play once the glue was applied.
- Pre-bending and scoring the plasticard along folds make it easier to flex into place

Very cool conversions here, that wierdboy is just plain awesome! Good use of the plasticard, looks like we can expect some more great stuff as you progress!

Thanks for the praise. I am very please with my WIP weirdboy, I have a feeling it was slight beginners luck (combined with a good amount of spares from my previous years of collecting)
Ive taken some better photos of my weirdboy so I can help explain him and how I made him.
Weirdboy:
First off, Im not really a fan of the model you can get for the WB. I feel it doesnt give off much of a vibe of a psychotic, ork demented and twisted by the warp who spews fire at foes and friends alike. So i decided I would love to build my own, as their psychic powers seem so awesome!
To start I took the legs and altered the foot on one and brought the thigh in on the otherside. I used green stuff to hide the breaks, moulding a bigger boot onto the foot. Then I worked the base. I wasn't quite sure how to have him but I really wanted him sort of charging/bursting into battle from the warp, like a crazy nutty ork would I created the base by building it up with spacemarine shoulder pads to get the shape (but sprue bits would also work), I then added on the demon prince shoulder, heads and the mutating man. Using green stuff I rolled it out flat into discs and pressed it onto the model to create a skin. Using modelling tools (basically something pointy and something rounded) I began to tease and pull the green stuff to create a sort of fleshy muscley tissue look .

After I had the base and the legs connected to the skull of the demon prince shoulder I put on the torso. Next came the head. I simply took the ork head I wanted and cut out an angle from the side, making room to add in the second head that would be mutating out. I did the same for the chaos mutant head, putting the two cut away parts together, so that the faces were level. I then used the same green stuff technique to create the flesh and glued the head in place, finishing off with more GS 24 hours later to smooth the head to neck.
For the arms, I used one of the standard boyz barrel grip on the right side, which I cut away the top of the musle and pinned on. for the axe hand I simply used the axe meant for the nob.
The staff is from the terminator plastic set. As is the cloak, helm on the chain and the symbol. I really wanted him to have a collection of talismans to show the way the orks didnt truely understand the warp and its powers, but just knew that by carrying these he could channel godly powers through himself. Hence the chain around his body and on the axe. They are his prizes.
The sword on his back will also be used to represent another collection of his which will be connected to the chain using some green stuff.

These guys look pretty sweet so far! But they look more like chaos Orks than regular Orks to me, so I think you should change your background fluff to suit them.

BADMOON MEGANOB:
I really wanted to scratch build some more meganobs. It was great fun just armouring them up and creating these huge hulking monsters. However, in order to keep in with the lighthearted and jokey aspect I wanted most my units to have I decided that the rest of my meganobs would be more jesterish.
So to start with I decided I wanted each meganob to represent of of the ork clans. and here is Mr Moon.

The weird boy reminds me of Angron. Also; I agree with you on the standard WB model, it doesn't do it for me. I'm working on my own but he's not nearly as cool as yours.

Another one of my finished models this week was my Ork biker.
Now this ork was just a regular joe on his bike, doing his usual shizzle, ridin' down mo' fo's, killin in style..... when one day, walkin' past a mech chop and shop he glimpsed a little snot brother bashin' some box fingie' all fuzzin' and screechin'. At that moment John wayne the baddest cowboy in da west burst on screen! riding some four legg'd beast tie'in up h'mans and blastin some old school pistols. At that moment John Wayne da II was borne!
(Might add a couple more features to him like a neck scarf and maybe a lasso, but working on other projects atm) Automatically Appended Next Post: Kizmet wrote:people like yo sicken me with your god given epic talents............

ahaha! thank you for the comment! If im honest the weirdboy sorta just fell like that. I intended it to be completely different and everytime I messed it up it became more and more like it is. The base wasn't even supposed to exist. Best thing about orks is the freedom. My conversion skills are very messy (which happens to suit orks ) But thanks for the support! the feedback is driving me to put more hours in almost as much as my own self drive.
