So just had a little thought on how to represent the Non-cult Traitor Legions (not including the black legion who are "Vanilla Chaos Marines"


Mark of Iron (Iron Warriors)

A model with a Mark of Iron has +1 Str. A army including a Mark of Iron Warp Smith may take Havocs as a troop choice.


Mark of Terror (Night Lords)

A model with a Mark of Terror gains the Fear special rule. If the model already had fear (including due to Warlord Traits) instead forces units to test at -1 Leadership. An army including a Chaos Lord with Mark of Terror may take Raptors as Troops.

Mark of the Firstdamned (Word Bearers)

A model with a mark of the Firstdamned has the Stubborn special rule. An army including a Dark Apostle with a Mark of the Firstdamned may take Possessed as Troops.

Mark of the Hydra (Alpha Legion)

A model with Mark of the Hydra has the Infiltrate Special rule. In an army including an HQ choice with mark of the Hydra, Chaos Space Marine Squads and Chaos Cultist have the scouts special rule.

Nice idea. However, for the mark of iron it should be maulerfiends as both heavy and elite slots. Also, for the Mark of terror, it should be warp talons, not raptors. If I may, I will suggest some more marks.

Mark of Plague (Death Guard) All CC and shooting attacks are poisoned

Mark of Blood (World Eaters) All CC attacks have the furious charge rule as well as Rage.

Mark of Dust (Thousand Sons) All bolters have the soul blaze rule, and hit non vehicle or character Space Wolves on a 2+, unless it is better.

Mark of Agony (Emperor's Children) These models have Feel No Pain 4+. If they pass the FnP test, they get +1 WS, +1 S, and +1 A.

Mark of Death (Black Legion) If in 18" of Abbadon, or 9" with a HQ with the veterans of the long war, the model gets +1 WS, +1 BS, +2 Ld, and +1 T.

Why Maulerfiends and Warp Talons? No one would take MF in Elite either and Raptors are just as good as Warp Talons, and in many cases better in terms of versitility.

As for the other Legion marks, I can't say I am a fan. I think its wuite easy to represent those 5 via Marks, Icons, or Icon of Vengeance. Althought they are cool and I would like to give them a go myself. My orginal intent was just to provide a way of representing a non-Big 5 legion.

A model with Mark of the Archtraitor has the Adamantium Will Special Rule. A Chaos Lord with Power Armour and MotA allows Chosen as Troops. A Chaos Lord in Terminator Armour with MotA allows Terminators as Troops.

If only this were included in the dex, I'd be so happy... trying to make a fluffy IW force is next to impossible as it stands

Not bad. I was gonna say that IW should get an extra heavy slot... but 6 squads of havoks with 3 vindi's would work lol...

That would be so much better than having to double force org just for an extra heavy slot.

Actually, MF is ok, but the reason I said warp talons is because the fluffy night lords are seeming more suited to warp talons. In fact, the codex says that. However, I see what you mean about the big 5 legions...

Two notes: The first is that the suggestion for Marks for the World Eaters, Plague Guard, etc. don't work, since those units are already 'Marked' by their chaos gods. In effect, Mark of Khrone is the World Eaters mark, and Mark of Slaneesh is the Emperor's Children mark.

Also, according to the fluff, Night Lords would use Raptors rather than Warp Talons, due to their relative distrust of Daemons and Daemonic entities when compared to every other Chaos faction (arguably the only major traitor legion which feels similar are the Alpha Legion). So that means that, by the fluff, most Night Lords commanders would not use Warp Talons, Possessed, or Daemon Engines.

Would you not say that the Iron Warriors had the same feeling towards daemons, given that they replace any daemonic gifts with mechanical implants (I forget the actual word for it all of a sudden) as soon as they develop?

Well, the Iron Warriors help make Daemon Engines, so it can't really be said thay have the exact same felling...

Same here. I was just theorizing on the mark ideas I had. I must have just mixed up the raptors and warp talons.

Mark of Terror (Night Lords) could change the -1 ld for the terror used in fantasy which is basically fear that affects fearless units. Still wouldn't be that powerful since the only models with fear are the daemons on the codex of the champions/lord with rolls on the table of the gods or warlord traits

I was actually considering that. Wasn't to sure. I had a few concept ideas for various marks, such as MoI granting +1 to the save and MotF granting ATSKNF, but I didn't want any of these becoming must takes over others.

Gonna put up a poll to help decide.

I think mark of iron should allow the model to reduce enemy cover saves by 1.

Havocs as troops are too powerful(remember havocs can take plasmaguns, meltaguns, flamers, anything)


For Mark of the Firstdamned, models in BTB with Firstdamned cannot use the ATSKNF special rule.

I understand your reasoning behind MoI, but for MotF I just don't get it. Why? It would make MotF an autotake. Ignore the lynchpin rule of half the armies in 40k? And chuck on VotLW for hatred too...
