Hello there!

I have been out of the Hobby for sometime, for the last couple of months I really wanted to get back into war gaming. I have started projects in the past that have fallen flat, I really think I take on too much too soon. I wanted to pick an army that I could make paint and get playing with - instead of trying to scratch build a whole army in some crazed converting scheme.

So with little knowledge of rules/codex, I flicked through a few different armies and I got to Necrons, I always liked the idea Necrons but I thought they never had enough choices or range of models - I took an instant love of the many new units to choose from, I had my army.

My love of the new models was quickly blunted by the price of said models! So as any good wargamer i took too ebay.

After waiting a little too long this arrived -

1x Necron Overlord

24x Necron Warriors (half on sprue, half made)

10x Immortals (half on sprue, half made)

3x Tomb Blades still on sprue

1x Annihilation Barge (Poorly made, needs alot of work)

2x Necron Night Scythe/Doom Scythe Mint in boxes!

1x Necron Codex - looks new.

All this for a best offer of £86 - so was really happy at that, I stopped counting as 2 Doom Scythes and a Codex is nearly £80. So very happy!

Right to modeling, since I dont have much idea about what will be in my army, I chose to start making a standard Necron.

As quite a few Necron pushers I've seen online, I'm going to change the stance, I dont really like the odd wide legged pose.

This is how far I got -

Sorry its not the best photo but I hope you can make out what I'm going for. A more natural walking action of the legs, and a hunched over torso, hopefully on mass this will look like a horde of metal monsters ominously advancing.

Anyway thanks for looking - sorry there is not more but getting back into the swing of modelling took far too much time!

Must admit I do prefer that more upright pose you are doing there, less of a squat stance and more... yeah, more ominous.

That pile of goodies makes me really excited though! That's a mad bargain. My chaos marines await your onslaught!

Yea, I really dont get the idea behind the standard stance, seems them should be riding a horse prehaps!

---

Well after alot of cutting, drilling and thumb slicing - the relentless horde of Necrons is up too... six!

Well just about anyway -

Not sure if you can make out the detail but I made some bases, they will be painted without the Necrons in place - mainly as its easier to paint, and the bases are sprayed black and the Crons will be sprayed white.

Some shots of the six I managed to put together, hope it gives you some idea of the new walking pose - if not I may have wasted a couple hours haha.

Once the glue dries I have spotted some flash (were covered in it) I missed, and I may add some battle damage.

I'll spray and paint them on the wood block, I'll give batch painting a go for the first time.

Thanks

Seeing them all together like that, love it! That whole squad together will look really dynamic.

Whats the colour scheme you're going for?

Cheers, I had a bit of a paint today, think I'm going for the less bright Cron option.

----

Had a little paint today, I finished the bases first for some reason -

And I made a start on the Crons, just 2 layers so far so bvery much a wip. -

I'm going for the worn look - these guys are ment to be a million years old so I dont think the shiney Cron look is the way for me, may try thr weathered brass look but just playing about so far.

Cheers

Thanks, me too! progress has been a little slow however haha.

Hello again,

I've made a little progress, but not as much as I hoped. I have just about finished putting a magnetized Night Scythe/Doom Scythe together, I really couldnt decide which I wanted, so I made both!

I have also finished a test model, been playing about with a few different colours, but im pretty much settled on this guy -

I've gone for a little less new looking cron, wanted to make these guys look old, I also had a go at OSL, first attempt at it really so hopefully I'll get better. Now i know what i'm aiming at i should be able to get a few more crons sorted.

I have also just bought some water effects so may have a play about with that!

Thanks for looking

He looks mean, excellent job. Necrons can be very dull, but he's menacingly characterful.

That is one seriously battle damaged warrior. I like the OSL on the weapon, but not so much on his face. He looks like he has a bad case of make-up.

Are you going to paint the immortals on such a battle damage state or are they going to be in a more perfect condition because of their more "elite" status?

Oh, and how did you change the position of their legs? Cutting and pinning? I tried to do the same, but because I didn't have that, I tried to recreate the missing parts with green stuff and glue.

I have to say, I generally find Necrons to be the most boring looking force in 40K, but I like what you are doing. I like that they are more grungey and worn looking, as ancient robots would be. And nice work with the OSL.
Also, I approve of your thread title.

Yea, I get what your saying about his face, less green prehaps? more white? green wash? I'm not sure about the Immortals yet, I was planning to do them simular but maybe I should read some background on them first. The legs were mostly cut and pinned, I replaced the back part of the knee with some metal rod. The hips had to be redone with green stuff, tbh its a right mess on but hopefully worth it

Many thanks! Yea, more happy with the attempted OSL on the gun than the face. Horde of 6 and a half built Night/Doom Scythe !!

I only don't like it because the eyes are tiny but it highlights the entire upper area of the cheeks. I can understand why people do OSL with Space Marines since it's a fairly big eye lense, but not so much with the necron warriors.

I tried to do something different with my immortal's mouth, tho. I paint all the slots between their ribcages with the "power source" colour, and for that extra detail, I decided to paint the mouth of the immortals.

Moral of the story: Some look awesome, others look like they had an accident with their lipstick

And again, I think the Gauss OSL looks beautiful! For the eye OSL, I would reduce it a bit, I guess.

Well I've opened one and half built it, one is still MIB however, I'll see how well they do in game

Hrm, yes think I'll try just a little glow on the edge of the rim of the eye socket, think that may work!

I love the painting on that cron! May just have to steal that white skull idea for my own little squad.

I would never guess that this was your first attempt at osl, very nice and subtle. I find too many people just plaster their models with it and ruin the whole thing, you have got it just right!

Great scheme on the Necrons. Look much much better than my hubbys Necrons. Those are.............interesting. o_O Haha! Bases look sweet and I'm not sure if you're tired of hearing this though but wicked OSL on the gun. First time I tried OSL it took me about three tries on the same model to get it looking even half decent.

Nice work and good luck with the rest of your army.

That looks awesome, exactly how Necrons SHOULD look rather than super shiney and new. Looks like he's fought through a massive ash and smoke covered battlefield. The OSL looks great imho, I'd like to see this in 28mm rather than huge photo mode to judge the eyes better as it could look far less obvious on the tabletop.

What is the recipe for the metal? It looks to have all sorts of colours mixed in there?

If I can remember what order, I think it was -

Under coat Warplock Bronze,

Base coat of Runelord Brass

Highlight of Golden griffon

Light wash of Agrax Earthshade,

Added damage detail with Brass Scorpion,

Added metal corrosion Temple Guard Blue highlighted with Ushabti Bone

Then a light wash of Nuln oil in some parts, and Coelia Greenshade in others.

Hello there! Many thanks sir!

---

Okay, so i planned to finish the painting on the 5 crons I started, however the half finished Scythe was sitting on my table looking sad.... so I had a play with that instead .

Gladly I have finished converting it and putting it as much together I can before painting. Now - pre warning, dont attempt a conversion like this unless a) you like cutting your fingers or b) you like moaning about cutting your fingers.

So with a little hint of the B-movie here we go -

First off the canopy - this took hours getting to fit right! Just in case I need to justify the need for a massive metal robot to need a canopy I came up with the following-
1. Robots get cold too,
2. Robots don’t like birds smashing off their faces
3. And finally ….. Scythes aren’t open topped (rules FTW)
As you can see the thing is still in bits due to ease of painting, the weapons and base are magnetized so I can use it as both variants.
I spent a little too much time on the base too, I’m normally not a fan of ‘busy’ bases, but it was so big I thought it needed a little bit extra. Sooo errr, Ta-Da!!

Anyway, Painting next! I promise!

Thanks

The canopy idea is FANTASTIC. It really gets the old school sci-fi feel across. What did you use to make it? Or did I miss it in your post? I may just have to steal that idea for my own metal men...
