Anyway, onwards to some Deadzone news, this is what the retail box for deadzone will look like, along with its contents:

Looks a fantastic starter set on its own Had to check back on the ks to see what exactly I was picking up in the Striker package, I got a feeling with just the first survey add-ons i'l be painting for a year at least. One thing tho, Mantic, please don't make the plastic sprues suck!

I think I better email Mantic. Still not had an invoice or a confirmation of my pledge. I'll probably be stuck until the second wave now.

Starter set looks good! Glad got in on the KS with the better value and optional extras all in one, not to mention one proverbial gaktonne of terrain and extra mats. 4x6 boards with lots of deadzone terrain and that new set of prefab buildings coming out soon (Spartan?) will be godlike to play on imo.

Edit: Got my paypal invoice and paid. Was $25 different to the spreadsheet I saved, but it may have been a last minute "why not get a shirt while I'm at it" thing. The lack of knowing what they have me down for is not ideal. Would save a lot of future problems I imagine.

The starter set looks promising. But I thought the product shots of project pandora looked promising until a buddy got it and I saw it in person.

I hate that everything has to be so damn "wait and see" with Mantic.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

I know what you're saying but I think this one will be OK.

This feels kind of like their 'last chance'.

Well, for me it certainly is!

Has their sci-fi stuff had a major dud yet? So far, I think they've been pretty successful in terms of quality on the sci-fi stuff. It's just the fantasy products that are suffering.

I hope so too.. I'm basing this on a lot of the Warpath and Dreadball stuff being good, the stuff we have seen of this so far, rather than some of the KoW bits and pieces people have been disappointed with so far..

It depends on how you view their first plastics - the not-fantasy-dwarfs forgefathers and the barefoot not-fantasy-orckzx. The greenskins are okay if you like the Mantic style, but the not-squats are/were a fail that doesn't scale with their newer Forgefathers.

I can't say that the re-used fantasy parts bothered me all that much. So, it wasn't a fail for me.

I'm in the minority that doesn't mind the plastic Forgefathers. I think they have a perfectly fine 2nd Edition Squat aesthetic, which seeing as I am using them as Squats, is perfectly fine.

I pledges for just the $10 download rules, especially after I say that the 2nd phase survey would have everything from the 1st phase survey. I just didn't see any of the starting factions that interested me other than the Enforcers (Marauders had me before the bad sculpts showed up), and I am in a position that requires me to have two functioning factions to get other people to play with me. I figure I can have all the rules to see if they interest me totally, and then in Q2 2014 I can get the Enforcers and the Forgefathers to go against each other.

I think the forge fathers with the face masks look awesome, but the mask really takes one's eyes away from the fantasy looking parts.

I'm looking forward to the big mech. Really impressive miniature for $20 retail. Still going to wait and see on it though until after a youtube unboxing or some more pictures "in the wild" rather than just one pro painted display model.

We'll have to agree to disagree on the Forgefathers, like some do with the Mantic Elves.

Dear sir, didn't you realize all opinions are objective?

I think the FF have got a bit of a bum rap because they shared the KoW bits, but I've got some of the newer ones and they are nice little minis - definitely better than the old Squat models in any case

I don't mind the FF range (absolutely love the DB designed FF) but I'll wait till it's all one material as I absolutely despise Mantics Hybrid kits (had some bad experience with there enforcer hybrids).

Damn Pacific, you're reminding me I've got a whole box of FF troops I haven't even touched yet.

Cool pics Pacific. I really like them in grey, though I may go for an Imperial Fists "industrial yellow" to make them drastically different than the rest of my collection.

But....that's it? There is no way a loincloth and a dagger make them look worse than the original Squats. In fact, this is the first really good rear picture I have seen of the plastic troops.

If it wasn't for having seen the fantasy models they are made from, or heard about it on the 'net, I would never have called out the "fantasy" parts when assembling the models- I would have just gone with it. It's really no more pseudo-medieval than anything else in the 40K universe.

I felt the same way for a while, until I tried drilling and pinning the metal parts. The metal Mantic uses is remarkably soft and easy to drill, and doing so removed pretty much any reservations I had about their hybrid kits.

Now showing Catachan Jungle Fighters and World War zombies!

Painting total as of 30th November 2025: 136 plus a Deva King statue

Painting total as of 12/31/2024: 107 plus a set of modular spaceship terrain and two walkers and a quad mech and five giants

Yeah, I suggested we agree to disagree because I didn't feel like potentially fighting an internet war over it.

We'll have to agree to disagree there as well. I really did like the slightly rag tag, dwarf biker look of the original RT-era squats. So pissed off I sold the ones I had as part of the Imperial Guard Army I sold (which I'm also pissed about) when I was 16 or so.

I haven't done anything with my plastic FFs. This is mostly stemming from my disappointment in the fantasy ones that I got in Morgoth's Revenge, started assembling, then realised how bad I felt they were/are and put them back in a box, somewhere. But Original Squats kick arse.

^ Yeah, the decision to replace dwarves with orcs and goblins in the new 2-player set was a very good one.

Shows off Mantic's best model ranges, and makes the overall set much better value for money since I can see myself making both Orc and Undead armies because the minis are:

a) Gorgeous and
b) Soooo cheap. They're running a sale at the moment where the box is £40 instead of £50.. combine that with internet retailer discount (I found it at 35% off), and it ends up costing around 30p/mini, some of which is cavalry and the really nice restic wraiths. No-brainer purchase.

How can you combined these two? Does the sale from Mantic's site apply to the discounters too, or...?
