By now even the next 40K starter armies will be beyond the planning stage, and a good bit into production. For the next WHF starter the sculpting should be done by now.

This seems a long way off. Plenty of time to get rid of all the abstract nonsense from 8th then.

Actually, now that I've stopped playing Fantasy, I'm intrigued to see how they're going to make it even more like a Michael Bay movie.

If we're going on the logic that they'll nerf everything people own to get people to buy the new stuff......

Hoard and Magic based armies arent gonna work anymore, we'll go back to small MSU elite/cavalry armies! Shiny NEW elite units!

FOR BRETONNIA!

Given that what ever is introduced in 40K tends to find its way into Fantasy (and vice versa), fortifications wouldn't surprise me.

Every army will set up with a big castle and the game will start to look like this.

I had that game! I loved that game! The winner was who could get the most tension on their rubber bands on the ballistas!

It can't be that time again surely. The last edition was only 2 and a bit years ago!

July 10, 2010 was the release, right?

So this is an easy rumor.

Guess what, you can put me down for 2016 for 7th edition 40k.

Which isn't a hard guess. They've been on an alternating 4-year cycle for a while

2006 - Fantasy 7th
2008 - 40K 5th
2010 - Fantasy 8th
2012 - 40K 6th

Oh and also I guess the "success" of 40k allies will mean allies will be a more casual game thing in the new fantasy game compared to the current fantasy allies rule

Finally I can field those kislevites I have!

Yep, here's my rumor...

"Talked to some folks in the know at GW. They advised me of the main system update dates for the next 10 years!!!

Fantasy 9th - 2016
40k 7th - 2018
Fantasy 10th - 2020
40k 8th - 2022"

It still stumps me that they apparently have no intention of updating all the books in an edition any more.

Man, Kings of War is looking more attractive by the second. At least in that game, I can just download the rules updates instead of shelling out for a gigantic pile of hardcover books!

When's the last edition that they did this? 3rd 40k, iirc.

I don't think they ever managed it in Fantasy. They came close once mind. In 4th edition they released books for every single army except Bretonnia and Lizardmen (which were the first books in 5th). That's the only time they complete a full army book cycle without updating a book out of sync.

I guess you're right. I really enjoyed playing with Ravening Hordes and the Third Edition Back Of The Book lists, possibly because I was at the age to appreciate the simplicity of the lists. It has always bugged me how the edition schedule goes faster than the book cycle because it means they can't change too much without making the older books unusable, which is why 6th and 8th edition are to my mind completely bloated with legacy rules that make it really hard to pick up. My girlfriend asked me to teach her to play Warhammer, and I actually think I'm going to teach her LOTR or Kings of War instead, because for a new player they are just so much more accessible.

Well, it's not a bad idea because 8th edition caused so many folks in my area to stop playing fantasy. I'd welcome allies like in 40k, I think it levels the playing field a lot.

We'll see in a few years

At the rate they're releasing Fantasy books, not even half the armies will have 8th edition books before they make the switch to 9th, but at least Bretonnians are supposed to be updated sometime this year, I think.

Poor Wood Elves. :(

Harry just said that 2014 will see the new Fantasy edition and not all miniatures are sculpted yet. No idea why naftka invented something about production start.

A new edition is the only chance to play Wood Elves again. They have to change skirmish rules. And they have to nerf cannons, so that monsters become overpowered and everybody will buy them. The thing with allies and buildings would make sense too.

I don't think this is any different than any other time GW has wanted to sell a specific kit. In fact it seems like a page right out of their (lack of) Marketing playbook.

I've always wanted to play Fantasy, but it's never been big in my area. Even when there were 5-6 people playing it during the Ard Boyz craze, I just didn't want to shell out the cost to actually put something together as I'm most interested in playing human factions. When Mantic gets their human faction into production, I may take a closer look at a Counts As fantasy army, or getting my group interested in Mantic's game.

So 40K is Summer Olympics, Fantasy is Winter Olympics then? lol

It should be really, really obvious by now that new editions are not about improving the game but are about their commercial purposes-- getting as much money out of the customer base as possible. It's amazing that people still pretend 40k and WFB are actually games you play rather than marketing tools that play you.

Hopefully 9th will be playable. I doubt it but you never know.
