Next up, learning some new paint techniques. I really want my Crusader and other DFG models to stand out, and need to get better with a brush.

Nice work. The highlighting on her beret looks quite smooth in that photograph.

Thanks. Couple shades of German greens there. Trying to push myself more on the paintwork lately.
I'm working on some new techniques right now. I bought some products from AK interactive that I think will help me greatly.
Once my wife gets back to work and I have my off days to myself again I'll be able to paint more

Sorry

I don't think I have a single thing in Wave 2, so I haven't been as interested... roll on Wave 3 and those lovely APCs!

Wave 2 and all my lovely new weapons arms! Then wave 3 and a bunch of new infantry for me to play with! Hooray!

Meanwhile I've completed the first of my two Crusaders, I haven't even begun to assemble the other one, but I plan to tackle that this weekend! I don't think I'm going to get it painted till I return from Japan though. Not completely any way, it had a much more complex paint job then my first Crusader, which is representing a noble house in the Iron Core universe, while it's counter part is going to be an Army model in the same Olive drab as Ada.

Yeap, I've been playing wth some resin scenery learning to use some new techniques with MIG enamel washes, powders, airbrushing and figuring out how to create reasonable-looking verdigris and other effects on the scenery before I unleash all the new techniques on my actual minis.

Sorry Bro. Looks like it's been.. about 3 weeks? since we've heard from Mark now. I'm looking forward to W2 in some ways even more than I was for W1, as I have a ton of the smaller mechs as well as a bunch of guns for the W1 figures. I'm thinking now that I may wait till my Wave 2 stuff is here before I paint/assemble the W1 stuff, so the arms are painted in a consistent manner/scheme. Not sure yet...

I've got stuff in every wave, so they're all an eagerly awaited treat for me.

Wave 2 has my 2 Mortis Levis, a bunch of weapon arms, and however many Mini Crusaders I pledged for (I don't even remember, although I am sure they'll make fantastic Dreadknights).

Wave 3 has my command squads, a couple of APCs (I know I'm going to end up ordering more from The Warstore, I just had limits to my funding when the time came), the Zeus kit, Mini Moris levis, Black Widows, and an absolute crapton of Heavies and Valkir. Wave 3 is going to be big.

New update from Mark:

t has been a loooong time since the last update. We are not quite at the point that they have given me box dimensions for box art but I know we are getting close

The 15mm scale Crusader is nearly done in tooling. They had it completed but wanted to make a few small tweaks to accommodate the small part size and wall thickness

The Mortis is in the final tooling stage now. The head and claw hand was more difficult than anticipated but I just signed off on the final parts for that so just a few days on the CnC and they will be sending me some shots of an assembled model.

The other weapon arms have not gone to tooling yet but are fairly straight forward as far as tooling goes. I hope to see some finals on these soon.

I just wanted to say thank you for being so patient and that I hope to be posting some pics over the next week or so.

Cheers

Mark

They'll be up for retail. I wasn't in a position to get a 15mm leviathan either, will be ordering retail as well.

In a van down by the river

It's good to get news and that progress is steamrolling along.

@KOVAV: The 15mm Crusader (the one with Teutonic/Grey Knight styling with sword) is part of Wave 2, which is addressed in the update from Mark just posted. My personal guess on when they'd be in stores would be around June, possibly into July. Wave 3 brings the 15mm Mortis (the death's head one with the scythe and claw), but any date range on that would be complete speculation. I'd pencil in September, but again that's a total guess.

I'm very hopeful that they were able to get the same level of detail and engineering in the 15mm one that the 28mm version has on it. The big one is simply a fantastic model in almost all regards. If that level of detail is retained, especially in regards to posing, I think it will be a severe kick in the behind to other companies to up their game.

I imagine you're a little bit hopeful there. It's almost May now, so if Mark hasn't sorted out the box dimensions for W2 items, it's not going to be anywhere in June. Remember, the fully-completed items also have to come from China, and they're going to ship in a wave, as W1 did.

I'm not completely disagreeing with you because your theory of events is entirely likely, however Mark's last communication on the topic of timing was that they would be making up "some" of the three month delay that Wave 1 had (even with the absence of requests for art). Since March to June is a 3 month delay, it'd seem reasonable to say that they will indeed be shipping in June. To retailers by then might be overly optimistic, due to logistics. Mark might also find that his own belief they will make up the time to be based too much on hope, as it wouldn't be the first time that's happened in this industry. For the time being I'm just taking Mark at his word since he knows much more about what's going on than the rest of the forum combined (and probably still not enough for his liking).

Tell ya what though, if this wave slips past June then I'll be more cynical on Wave 3.

To be frank, I think Mark was being a bit too optimistic. Given the experiences with this KS so far, I expect the delays to continue to slip further, a little at a time - rather than decrease. It'd obviously be fantastic if I turn out be wrong, but I don't think I will be...

If Mark's updates were more frequent and filled with "it's all happening, guys!" I might expect them in June. The updates are more in line with "Progress is happening, slight problem with this, but it's fixed. Looks like a small delay with that, but nothing major."

I'm not going to put a date where I expect to have W2 in hand by, but I think June is too soon. I'm merely hopeful that we might have W3 in hand before Christmas, but not really expecting it to happen before then.

It's not even cynicism anymore. I simply have no faith in any KS to turn up on time. It's a big reason I'm not really going in on (m)any anymore.

I agree with the KS fatigue on deliveries. DreadBall has been something of an exception, but Mantic also gave themselves a bit of leeway by specifying quarters instead of months for the most part. Kingdom Death is obviously not due for many months yet, but I would be completely unsurprised if that one became a victim of its own success and slipped just due to the sheer weight of manufacturing to be done.

I think in the case of DreamForge, they tend to be optimistic but there was certainly a lot of delays imposed by the time of year from both cultural (holidays, etc) and more mundane standpoints (weather in the case of US, poor shipping communication for the Rim). Hopefully (there's that hope word again), they can get the boxes on the water in May, which would put them in our grubby hands soon enough into July. As close as May is, that's looking like less of a prospect, but not impossible either. If we don't get them until deep into summer it's not the end of world of course, but it does make me leery of supporting new KickStarters in general. DreamForge I'll probably always toss a few bucks at because the models are amazing IMO, but it does hurt some of those other companies who try to go this route with each KS that slips.

I'm very satisfied with the one thing I said I wasn't going to get: the infantry (because I have enough stuff to paint!).

I can't wait for the APCs.

Well, he did say in his last update that we should be getting pictures sometime this week. I guess that means we can't be too far from the factory chugging out kits, right?

Does anyone know what tooling time is usually like for a sprue that size?

I would imagine wildly variable.

However, the longest item would be the 15mm Leviathan. The Mortis is mostly the same sprues as the Crusader, and if memory serves is actually fewer due to the lack of leg armor. The extras for the Mortis (Vulkan and Capacitor Coolers) are already done, and the rest of Wave 2 is weapon arms which are likely two sprue deals.

If the 15mm is "nearly done in tooling" and the Mortis is in "final tooling" I would say it's not outlandish for them to be done now (i.e. - a week later) for the production runs to start. I might view the weapon arms as simpler than they are from a tooling standpoint simply out of ignorance, but I can't believe they will take anywhere near the time of those other two to tool, nor that their production runs will be that sizable compared to say, the APCs or either of the leviathans.

Reviewing what's in each wave though, Wave 3 looks absolutely bonkers. I'd forgotten a few of the things in there (which is bad, since I know I ordered some ) so I can see the sheer number of kits knocking that back a bit. Time will tell, but it's fun to speculate in the meantime.

Mortis also has some differences to the outer foot structure, particularly the "toe" end of the foot. So, the differences with the main body are the lack of leg armor, different feet, lack of arm armor, and head. IIRC, leg armor comes on the same sprues as the leg structure itself, so they'd likely be taking the renders of the leg structure, omitting the armor from the sprue, changing the foot on the sprue, add a new head in place of the Crusader's head, and finish up the new arm weapons. Mark himself thought the additional arm weapons would be quick to put out. The Mini-Levis just needed a couple tweaks to the tooling, and as of the last update, he'd signed off on the last bits of the Mortis prior to tooling. I'd expect him to be sharing the pics they'll send over very shortly, and he should have test pieces in hand very soon, too. After that, we're just waiting on full line production.

Now now, Mark is a much more clever goblin than that. The leg armor is actually on the same sprue as the toes, meaning that the parts that are noticeably different are grouped together or on their own sprues entirely in the case of the head. I wasn't entirely sure of this and I'm far too lazy to unearth my unassembled leviathan box from the pile of Dreamforge goodies, so I found this picture that confirmed it:

Crusader Sprues and a big thanks to Roebeat's Magical House of Sunshine for doing that review since I'm stealing their image from it and all...

I didn't particularly feel like getting my unbuilt Crusader out to check, either.

I also have a class I have to get to, so I didn't go sleuthing for pics of sprues.
