Thought I'd see what interesting item combinations folks have spotted in the new book.
Many have pointed out the Mark of Tzeentch + Talisman of Preservation + Third Eye of Tzeentch for the 3+ ward re-roll ward saves of 1.
I noticed Mark of Nurgle + Glittering Scales + Barded Chaos Steed + Shield + Scaled Skin gets you to a 1+ save and -2 to be hit in close combat for relatively small chunks of your magic item and chaos gift/mutation allowances.
Been trying to figure out something with the Pendant of Slaanesh, but in most cases, its just a more expensive combo that you'd use the stubborn hat for instead. (And note, they wisely prevented any other characters from joining in- its like they foresaw ridiculous Crown of Command hiding in a back rank shenanigans). Maybe in combination with Soul Feeder so you can get extra attacks for unsaved wounds suffered, then heal them back once you're swinging with a bunch of chops?

I like putting Exalted Heroes on Juggers for the extra wound. Only downside is that you probably have to join a unit of at least 6 Juggers (pretty expensive) or get sniped.

Not bad. And -2 to be hit in melee easily makes up for not having any ward save. might as well toss in the Dawnstone to reroll your armor saves.

Of course- you could still put a ward save on there if you're going with a Lord option. But yeah, that combo plus dawnstone makes a pretty durable BSB.

Chaos Knights + Mark of TZ + Blasted Standard. They can basically shrug off cannon fire (or any war machines for that matter). Even a cannon is only going to have a 3+ to wound but it will face a 3+ armor save. Stuff like stone throwers will just bounce off.
You can do the same with Chosen/Warriors, but their armor isn't quite as good.

No armor saves against the cannons, just the ward save, which is 6+.

Cannons would only be str 5 though. That's not nearly enough to negate armor. Only bolt throwers and some oddball war machines ignore armor. Cannons ignore armor by virtue of being Str 10. But if it's halved to 5 they only avoid heavy armor. Automatically Appended Next Post: Curse of the leper +D3 Toughness. And Trickers crown. +1 armor and reroll any successful to-wounds. Have that on a CL or sorc and they're really hard to hurt.

Funny enough, bolt throwers still negates your armor even at half strength due to their weapon trait, but not cannons.
I think giving Blasted standard to Warriors is good too, makes them more resilient against most range attacks.

If a character has a 3+ ward save, rerolling 1s... and is in B2B with an enemy model with Other Trickster's Shard (must reroll successful ward saves)...
He rolls a ward save and gets a 4 (success). OTS makes him reroll... and he gets a 1 (failure). Can he reroll that 1? Or does the rule of "can't reroll a reroll" kick in and force him to take the 1?

Although somewhat simple and obvious, Festus plus a unit of MoN Sword and Shield Warriors should be a hard as nail unit to break, -1 to hit them in CC, couple with 5+ regen and hits harder with poison too.
And thats before the possible Lore of Nurgle buffs!

Yeah the can't reroll a reroll would kick in, however if a 1 was rolled to start with, then you get the second result

Right. This pops up in interactions with Curse of the Midnight Wind and Hatred or ASF. You can't re-roll a re-roll, so...
Roll your ward save. Unless it comes up as a 2, pick it up and roll it again.

Soul Feeding and Sword of Flaming Death, and Poisonous Slime. Helm of many Eyes.
No armor saves, hits do D3 wounds. Attacks are poisonous, auto wound on a 6 to hit.
Then roll a D6 for each model slain, on a 6 it does another D6 S4 hits.
Then roll a D6 for each wound done, on a 6 you regain a wound.
Then Roll a D6 each turn, on a 1 you take a wound.
Basically, if you can roll a 6, you are awesome.
You still have 25 more points of gifts and 10 more points of magic items.
Against rank and file, this guy might out buzzsaw a Ghoul King. He would do exceptionally well against anything multi-wound. If you can get him on to rank and file ogres, it won't be pretty.
Edit: If this guy every rolled up Daemon Prince on the eye table, it would be amazing.

Going along with the Tzeentch/3+invul/Rerolls thing...
Lord, MoT, Scaled Skin Mutation, Third Eye of Tzeentch, Dawnstone, Armor of Destiny, shield, and a mount.
1+ rerollable Armor save on top of the 3++/reroll1's, with 25pts left over for other magic items like a Sword of Swiftslaying or whatnot.

How about the 45 point 4+ ward, with stubborn crown (35), dragon helm.
1+ armor, 3+++ (3 plus = re-roll 1;s), 2+++ vs fire.
I'd give up the re-roll armor for the stubborn.

Only if his mount is barded. He needs the shield if he's on a disc. That guy can tank about anything. I'd probably give him a Sword of Might for a little extra punch. Or put him on a barded steed and give him a great weapon and some kind of enchanted item? Maybe a potion of strength for a round of blasting through even sphnixes.

As a wizard a magic shield could only be taken if an armour option is available in the army list - as the chaos armour is standard, it would stop you having the charmed shield

I was wondering a little about this- need to look at the exact wording. Sorcerers in the old book could take magic shields but didn't have the option for mundane shields, so I assumed it was cool. Automatically Appended Next Post: Best I've been able to sort out for a Slaanesh Pendant lord is one of two options:
Lord, Mark of Slaanesh, Steed of Slaanesh, Scaly Skin, Soulfeeder, Pendant of Slaanesh, Talisman of Preservation, Great Weapon (10 remaining points could be a charmed shield or a dragonhelm. You don't need the pip of armor from the helm, but you'd get your flaming ward.
Or:
An option that goes the same, but trades the steed of Slaanesh for a barded Chaos Steed, takes the Dragonhelm for sure, and trades Scaly Skin for flaming breath.
It's a little risky, but you kind of prefer to take your wound or two (but no more hopefully!) to get the extra great weapon attacks, then hopefully heal them back with Soulfeeder. As far as I can read, even if you heal them back, you ought to hold on to the earned bonus attacks, but there may be a little wiggle room for debate.

Incorrect in 8th edition. If you have any type of armor, you can buy magic armor and magic shields.
That's why the Slaughtermaster, who can buy an iron fist (counts as shield) is specifically allowed to buy magic armor, magic shields or magic helms. Automatically Appended Next Post: How about this...
Tzeench character on daemonic steed (or disc), and the 3+++ save and Tricksters helm.
Joins unit with Blasted Banner.
Now when he catches cannonball/stone thrower, the strength is cut in half (most of the time), and the shot has to re-roll to wound, then he gets armor/ward.
Vs Cannon; it would wound
T5 Lord: 1/4 wound, 1/3 fail armor save, 2/9 fail ward. As long as you roll the 2+ to halve the strength, 1:54 cannon balls get through.
T4 Lord: 5/9wound, 1/3 fail armor, 2/9 fail ward. 1:~24
