Anyone think this is a bad idea? =/

Like, per-say I really like Land Speeders.. Is it generally permissible to spike-ify the thing and use the rules of said Land Speeder from the codex I originally took it out of ? Upgrades, point values ect.

Both for tournaments, and just for random games, I'm not sure how others have done things.

No, for tournaments you are normally required to obey the printed game rules, limiting you to just the units in your codex (or from other supplements allowed by the tournament, like the Ork and SM flyers which were added in WD).

In a home game, you can come to agreement with your opponent to allow whatever you like, of course.

Alrighty then, I'll try running it by my chaps and see what they think

I was really looking forward to buying a few land speeders and Drop Pods and converting them to Chaos. (The drop pod would actually be more of a custom conversion to a Dread-Claw though)

One alternative approach is to build your army so that it can function as EITHER a Chaos army or a loyal SM army, but only use the units which are legal in each codex at a given time. You can still model and paint them to be chaos if you like, but as long as you stick to the rules in one codex at a time, the army list is totally legal for regular games and tournaments without needing any special permission.

I have a Dark Angels/Fallen Angels army like this. If I want to use Land Speeders or Dark Angel wargear I leave my obliterators and daemon princes in the case. If I want to use my daemons and Helldrake, I only bring out units from the Chaos codex.

That way I can switch back and forth from game to game or tournament to tournament, and never have to worry about asking permission or worrying that combining the two might be unbalanced or unfair. I actually recently had the exact same idea as you about the converted Drop Pods to be Dreadclaws. Can't wait to try it out, actually.

I'm not sure that will work... maybe for a land speeder which isn't that great (unless it is the DA one), it would be kinda wrong, the codexes were written with the whole array of units in mind. Mixing units could eventually lead to some real cheese stuff, like having SS/TH termies on my chaos army allied with fateweaver.

Maybe if you followed the allies rules but ignoring the alliance chart that would be better, since then it would limit you to only one slot and force you to pay their respective HQ & troop

I really think that CSM should be able to take C:SM allies to represent recent chapters that have fallen to Chaos.

Would be battle brothers but restricted to no special characters.

If you could find forgeworld speeder rules, then you can run them as chaos speeders if your locals were ok with you doing that. That's the only way I can think of to take speeders for chaos.

The apoc book gives you permission to run anything imperial as chaos, so just run it by your guys.

Even as allies of convenience would have been ok, I was actually hoping for the DA to have an option for Cypher, If you pick Cypher as your HQ you get CSM to be battle brothers, would have been sweet
