The worst is prob the Gk Inquisitor He has nothing.

I like the Necron Destroyer Lord if no MCs aren't allowed. Warscythe +2 str w/ 2d6 armor pen and ignores armor. He is fast(Jump) and can reanimate. He also has a hefty 6 toughness.

They've both been said but best (non-FW, non-MC) has to be GK grandmaster and the worst has to be the ork big mek. It's not even really close after those. I have to say, while I understand the idea is to prevent people from just taking some uber HQ in a small points game that does all the heavy lifting, it seems like instead it just gives the advantage to some codexes more than others. Isn't it more imbalanced when some armies basic HQs are already 100-175 pt monsters, and other armies like orks and 'nids get a naked warboss and a prime?

Wouldn't just setting a points limit on HQ selections just make more sense?

The worst HQ in the game, without upgrades (And with) is the chaos daemons 'Herald of Nurgle"

He is utterly useless. In every respect. He has toughness 5. But can't kill a damn thing. He is basically, 1 plaguebearer, but for 3 times the cost and non-scoring (The only decent thing plaguebearers do really)

Not even his upgrades can save this guy, because at 50 points, with any decent upgrade being about 30 points, he becomes monstrously costly, for his use. Pitifull thing.

This really seems fishy, as if the guy came up with a perfect list to use in this scenario and then wanted to make sure everyone else was stuck on his level.

Yeah, this would be my other guess. Either this guy is a clueless newbie who thinks that death star HQ = win, or he's figured out some kind of "unbeatable" list and wants to ban everything that could possibly prevent it from winning. Either way I wouldn't play in his absurd little event.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

I think the worst is a BT Marshal/Castellan, they come with no weapons, or invun, just power armour...

Templars - 4500pts
Excoriators - 1500pts

Unusual suggestion - a Techmarine. Sure, he doesn't have fantastic stats but he's just about the only standard HQ I can think of with a base 2+ save. AND he gets a servo-arm to hit back with, which will Instant Death most of his opponents if it hits...

But in game he will automatically be assumed to have a ccw and probably has pretty decent stats otherwise. I bet he could take an ethereal apart

1 less ws on both and the castellan has 1 less w and ld, i think they would lose to anything other than an ethereal

Statiscally, without a power weapon of some sort, they'll lose to anything with a half-decent save, multiple wounds and a power weapon of its own. Which - let's face it - you're going to make sure you bring, in this kind of scenario.

absolutely, I would never run them bare in reality ( I have run one with just a boltgun before), but this is just showing examples, because if you've gotten to the point that you have a commander like that, you need to rethink your list

Big Mek is 90% Kustom Force Field.

And this is a great reason why this thread is ultimately pretty meaningless. Who cares about base wargear if your wargear options blow them out of the water? Most really solid baseline HQs start with chainsword+Bolt Pistol...

The really solid options start with laser pointers and cardboard

I third the BT marshal as worst for cost, for 80 points I get power armor, crusade seals and HIS HANDS! Not even a bolt pistol or grenades. So I guess BT players have to make do with running around punching people, which is actually kinda awesome.
