Re the marines height

My thoughts are that marines are too short for 7ft super soldiers. (My thoughts on the scale question is the the ##mm should be to the eyes for a average human sized figure)

At 28mm scale about 5mm is a foot. So marines need to be about 35mm tall IMHO (to be in scale), but at least a head taller than a nomal.

Thanks. Forgot how fun it was to fire both barrels so to speak. Wish I would eat something dry heaves are painful lol.

A not insignificant part of their deficiency is stance, they have super low wide stances like some karate styles. If you reposition their legs straighter you only need to add a couple of mm thick bits of card usually.

No DA army, but I was building my own space marine chapter (all 1000 plus support staff and vehicles). I wanted more than just a painted emblem or decal and saw the ravenwing pads were cheap. Everyone was buying the ravenwing boxes for the bikes and speakers not to mention the assault cannons, and dumping the pads. So I made some real money for a while parting out those boxes. Even bought 40-50 of the accessory sprue in one shot for $3.00 each ($120) and sold the parts I didn't want off the sprue for close to ($400), got to keep all the pads, and other stuff. Before I knew it I have over 1300 of the pads with the winged swords. The Theophony (my marine chapter) were ready to be unified, then GW got gay with the pricing and well a little more than half a chapter is in my pile of shame .

Just be glad it's you and not the little one who's sick, that's the worst.

Yeah hoping she doesn't get it, I can handle being sick I hate watching her or her mom with something.

Wow so you've got half a chapter but don't wanna continue since its all expensive? I could see that. I bought a few of those speeders myself. I've considered buying stuff and selling it by part but it always seems like too much risk or lack of return, or too much work.

Almost feel better finally.

Dude in the middle is new.

I've taken some shortcuts/changed methods a bit. Highlights on the black are drybrushed instead of painstakingly lined in, they aren't as sharp, but they also take much less time and I think it still works.

I think the colors are really similar, which is cool since the only paint I used on this guy that was the same as the others was the GW metal.

He's really short. I can probably handle it.

I need to strictly impose a no-tripod, no-photos policy...

This is the bothersome thing about space marines, he'd be taller than the other two humans if he weren't in such a wide stance, but at a glance it's hard to notice it.

Camera doesn't show the blue lenses, probably implies I need to pick some different colors to make them stand out better at a distance.

Forgot how to paint light things from a black undercoat since I've been doing white so long... should have done layers of lightening browns up to the paper color instead of brute force multiple layers over the black. Next time. Script is messy, I rushed it. I'll do script and eyes and stuff on a per-batch basis in the future. Color of the wax is acceptable.

I think I'll be happy with this level of quality, it's not much, but it'll work for tabletop and I'll actually paint the models this way, the edge-highlighting of the black parts (especially the backpacks) was killing me before.

I'll probably go back and apply the chips/scratches on a per-unit basis. I may also wait to do them until I have several units collected as I'd rather have more models done than less with neat battle damage (at least in the case of marines). If I do a big batch of 20-40 models, I can grab 5 at a time from different units and apply the same pattern/technique to that group also, saving time, and not being obvious at all once they're split back into their main units.

Mini-progress on the diorama:

A couple of layers of the plaster cloth stuff over the wire mesh. The building has a crooked look, but I don't think I really mind. I need to plan and arrange for anything that's going to be set in, like the door and any windows or advertising boards, before I apply the outer layer of plaster stuff. I may also attach a railing of some kind to the roof as I want those in my eventual board. Slow going, I may have to deploy this gift late.

He's not short he's just turning into one of the watchers in the dark .

Yeah when the cheap boxed army bundles go from $100 up to $125 each it really was the end of it. Plus not as many takers for the things I didn't need, and GW just killing everyone's interest in the game did it for me. Plus the silliness with black library switching to hardbacks and tpb formats and the stories of Horus heresy getting weaker

Haha, yeah I'm not really big on GW lately either, but for some reason I felt like painting the marines a bit. Seems like a drag to sell them and a lot of effort besides.

Not where I should be

Looks good bud. I think basing is not helping with the hieght issue, If you rebase them all they will look fine. Marines are small really though.

GW silly prices are a big stopping point. Mind you, If you sell them for a reasonably cheap price you will still be in profit with the rate they have increased in price over the last couple years. I look occasionally at the GW site, think the last time was when orks got a revamp the other day, well I could not believe seeing nice big armies complete for sale, but the price is just rediculous. £1000 plus in one hit, who does that?

Anyways, nice looking model, and quick means you can get them done. Dio looking like a good start too. Nice textures going on, are they finsh textures or will be covered?

Yeah this quick paint up still hasn't convinced me that I wanna keep them... just so wishy washy on the subject. I kind of doubt I could get myself to spend another 70-100 bucks in the new rules so keeping the army is very much both a fallacy along the lines of keeping a terrible old car running cause its your terrible old car (keep investing into something bad to spare your former investment, due to its perceived value... the way you might stick to wow cause you have leveled dudes instead of a new game...) and a slippery slope that will tempt me down a dark road of occasional regrettable painting and eBay bits binges...

I should sell the hell right out of them.

You more experienced eBayers... should I do it down to the singular itty bitz, or should I divide them into some certain arrangements like 'DA army deal' and 'ridiculous marine bits hoard' and the like? I'll have more time than money this winter...

I'll put some plaster/whatever its called on the building and a sand/rock mix on the ground. Not too thick on the building, I kind of like how its is now but too many holes.

A tip for your eye lenses Grim- bit of ceramite white or equivalent in the lens with your fine detail brush, then apply guilliman blue glaze with a standard size brush. Should make it really pop. Then you can dab a bit of varnish in there to give it that glassy sheen.

^I was kind of thinking that myself, will help me to better determine if I'm making money with them or not, and may be a sweet spot for shipping, maybe.

I gotta get rid of them though, I swear Its like GW is an abusive significant other, I keep going back even though I know it's stupid

Oh well maybe if I sell all of 'her' stuff I won't have any memories left to help me be weak!

@AoV thanks, I've tried different things over the years, these I just did really quick kind of as an afterthought, usually save details like that to do a bunch of at a time. I'll keep that one in my back pocket though, as it sounds both easy and effective and there are lots of lenses over my various ranges.

I have done a bit of selling and a lot of buying on eBay and I always tend to target the stuff that has the least amount of useless stuff for my needs.

So I would recommend selling as a previous poster said in usable units of 10, special and heavy weapon if you have them. That way you offer a usable unit without a heap of stuff a buyer may not want.

In regards to "bits" I would break them up into different categories. As in a weapons bundle, a back pack bundle etc. etc. Then the buyer can target exactly what they want.

Ebay isn't likely to make you rich, but can get you a nice little bit of spending money.

Just my two cents.

^Sounds about right.

Most of this stuff was salvaged from eBay anyway so it didn't cost a fortune. Making anything will let me turn around and reinvest into the hobby and with less of a guilty conscience since the money will have come from the hobby and room will have been made.

I could probably even one-up similar auctions by including a couple of heavy/special options per 10 man squad, got quite a few extra bits laying around..

Grimdork, have you considered using a color other than black to stand in for it? I've been using Vallejo's German Grey for my blacks. Slap some Nuln Oil over it and it works great!

My corporation marine armor is medium-dark grey with several coats of wash till it's almost black.

Most of my infinity guns start at charcoal (shade lighter than proper black) and highlight up from there.

Does the black look too flat as it is?

I think the biggest problem is their is no real contrast in the model. Robe is black, armour is black, guns are black.

Only some of them have robes. And the armor is typically grey, it's just the off color on the shoulder pads, elbow pads, gun casings... ok there *is* a lot of black but it's less than half of the model when it's a normal marine. The robed dudes are not the best example of the scheme, however, point made and he probably is too dark.
