Part of the responsibility of those providing the hardware and development software is to make it easy to use; or easy enough so you don't have to have an entire team of programmers to port from other formats.

This. There's being lazy, and there's having a hard time because the hardware's designer was lazy. Lets not defer Sony's laziness to others shall we? It's been well known for some time now that the PS3's dev kit is poop and that the PS3 has been very challenging for developers to work with. Coding a game is hard enough without the console maker adding extra hurdles.

I'm personally kinda bumd over the entire fact that even thought they can make a ps4, they still cant make it so you can play your ps,ps2 and ps3 games on it.
From each according to his ability, to each according to his need

Yea Im in the same boat. I used to be a PS guy, but then I bought an xbox to play something with the Giant, and I was hooked. Personally, I think everything is just better on the box, but please dont take this as a flame fest debate and all that jazz, just one mans opinion. Either way though, Ill wait till at least next year to buy whatever comes out.

Milking indeed. And the architecture of the system is completely different. x86-64 and what not.
Now the real question is, when hackers start kicking the consoles butt, is everyone going to keep pretending pirates and hackers only exist on PC- Oh wait, the PS3 already happened
Agreed. I mean, Im not expecting Nintendo to make a system that still plays my NES carts, but cmon people, the Gamecube wasnt that long ago
WiiU at least runs Wii games. Sony is just like "yo, screw you customers!". And really: what is the point of Next Gen consoles? You're better off with a pc by all regards. Buy a pc + controller => superior to consoles in (almost) all regards.
And the lineup is, again, so damn weak. Some kids game, a racing game, and (seriously Blizzard?) Diablo III. I mean...wow. Remember all of 'em complaining about Diablo III suffering from consoleritis? Yep, confirmed.
I had a thought though, isn't it going to be based in 32bit technology, so it won't even be able to utilize all the RAM they're putting in it?
Just to bring this up again, as I don't think anyone saw it. So that 8gb of RAM is pretty meaningless, and it isn't going to impact performance, and a single game/program can't even utilize most of it.

Are people even aware of how backwards compatibility works? The PS3 used cell processors, which was the whole problem with porting to the buggers in the first place. Since the PS4 is going to be using standard X86 64-bit processors (X86 has been in use for pretty much 3 decades now) it's impossible to make it compatible without actually making a new port for every single game. The good news about this though is that porting to and from the PS4 is going to be A LOT easier.
As for lineup, yeah, I agree it looks weaksauce. The only thing that may save this is Square's announcement at E3, but looking at what they have been doing lately.. not very promising to be honest.

Unless I'm willing to spend stupid money and rearrange my whole living room set up (which I'm not) I can't hop on the sofa and kick back to play my PC, that's the main reason. I do use my PC for gaming as well, some titles just aren't on the consoles, but if I want to grab thirty minutes, nine times out of ten I'll throw on a console game.

The WiiU emulates a Wii and thus lets you play Wii games - not sure if this *would* work with a PS4, but alas, Sony's going all hipster again. Release a console that's likely to be damn expensive, terrible lineup with high-end tech, drawing all those "yo dude check dem hardware stuffz" hipsters in while mom and dad play WiiU and the others play Xbox.
