Okay So here is the deal. I am a new player, and am going to start a Tau army. So I am going to wait for the new codex to come out. Which is supposed to be coming out soon. My theory is that advanced orders will be end of March. Anybody think this is a viable guess. I say guess because I have absolutely little to no evidence to back this up besides rumor threads. So opinions? am I crazy for even trying to predict when this will even happen?

Tau have been "about to get a new codex" for a few years now, bro. Sorry to break it to you.

They'll get one this summer... we've seen product lists for this summer and playtest stuff has been leaked... it is coming this time.

BTW "I have a feeling" is a worthless title to a thread

"A feeling about Tau release" or such actually serves the purpose of a title.

@Topic: If you can get some basic stuff for cheap, you can get stuff right now such as Fire Warriors or suits. Check ebay etc. and if you see a really good deal, go for it. The new units / boxes are likely to be significantally more expensive than before thus their second-hand price is to rise as well. Plan ahead.

I don't know about this. Battlesuits are one of the Tau's main things. Sure they will probably get some new stuff and you may need to do some conversion work on older models but if you like the models now then I see no harm in getting some now.

What he is saying is that Battlesuits are 'supposedly' getting completely new models, meaning that older suits may not mesh well with the aesthetics of the new design. What the new model rumors mean is uncertain (they range from 'same look but the sprues are re-cut with new upgrades' to 'look 100% different').

And as others have said, Tau have been 'the second next codex in the pipes' for about 3 years now. The only codex older than Tau is BT (sisters WD dex counts, as lacking as it is) so its bound to come eventually, but don't get your hopes up on any rumors you hear, since I'm pretty sure some of them have been recirculating since 2010.

Borrow the current codex (or steal it if you're so inclined), and build and start playing your army with that. If and when the new 'dex and models drop, you'll only have to pick up the new book and the sexy models that you want, and you may beat the eBay rush.

They did the same thing with new and old necron wraiths. The new ones look cooler, but they stand so freakin tall people want the old ones - cant do that technically

What do you mean? Official GW models are still official regardless of age. Unless I missed something major.

Official, yes, able to be used, not so much.
As an example, i have 3 of these, and they're useless without conversion.

Yeah you have to update them a little. Like old terminators needing new larger bases. Or new weapons. I was mainly saying older dont mean useless. Like the old ork truks are literally an inch tall and 4x4 inches long compared to larger newer truks.

Technically the old bases are legal and the old ones aren't

@Loki, I get what you mean, but we still got a new edition on the time table that pancake would have set... so while play-tests have/will be wrong, I've yet to see such significant play-tests not yield a new book. Kroothawk and pretre seem to be thawing on a possible summer release... I've yet to see this much traction on a codex release and it not be in the next 6 months

The old Wraiths are plenty fine to use. I've never had a problem with anyone telling me I'm not allowed to use either my old wraiths, OR my scratchbuilt old-style wraiths, which are the same size.
