"I don't buy games because other people don't buy games." And thus, GW's cycle of life continues.

Thats putting words in my mouth.

There are plenty of games laying about the house that have been played once or not at all.

I guess I got tired of being a salesman for other games systems.

And truthfully I don't even play 40k much these days anyways.

It's not so much complacency as it is FINANCES that limit me.

Malifaux.

I like the card mechanic and the way stats are used. The spells/magic makes the game interesting and there are a ton of combos.

Also. The fact that you are always doing something and involved makes te game enjoyable. Even when it is not my activation I am usually involved.

Strategies and schemes. These make the game different. You are not always out there to kill as much as you can. That is part of te game but not the focus. You can win with no models on te board, unlikely but possible.

Hobby side, you are not painting te same mini overand over. When you paint ten characters you have painted ten different models. Not a tactical squad or equivallent.

40K because it's everwhere and the setting is pretty badass, I like fantasy as well but haven't played in years sadly and finances dictate this will remain the case. FoW gets a mention as it's easy enough to pick up, reasonably true to the time period and my entire army (4500+ points) fits in a single shoebox.

I have been playing mini games since I was a kid. I have found that side games outside of GW are not worth playing. 40K is really your best bet if you want access to a reasonable amount of opponents.

The issue is players. It is too hard to find players for most other games, and all of the games eventually die. You are than stuck. Trying to recruit other players into a dead game is an effort in futility.

As this is a GWcentric forum thats to be expected. I'm suprised that the GW numbers aren't higher to be honest, given the audience.

My own favourite is probably Necromunda, even if I haven't managed to get a game in about 5 years now. That always seems to be the problem with good games, they tend to be quite old with the result that no one plays them anymore.

These days my gaming time is roughly split between 40k and FoW but thats mostly through convenience rather than choice, especially with 40k.

That was what I was thinking. I do find it odd that people continue to visit a community of a game they claim not to like. Surely other games have their own on-line communities?

40K is currently my favourite game right now. My most played game right now (amongst the many I play) is Heroclix and I'm looking at starting playing Hail Caesar if I can interest anyone else down our club. But I've a feeling Blood Bowl is about to take off at our club again, I have my Orcs ready.

Apologies for talking positively about games I enjoy.

Mind you our group is enjoying 6th Edition quite a bit after having skipped most of 5th and all of 4th. My favorite game is a home brew for Napoleonic 15mm's. Then Epic 30k based off FoW rules set during the Horus Heresy. Battlefleet Gothic is probably my favorite GW game, sadly nobody around here plays it anymore. FoW is still big, but we only play Mid War Ost Front stuff. Played Empire from 3rd to 5th, so WHFB doesn't do anything for me. Warmahordes has some cool mechanics, but doesn't satisfy my need to have hundreds of models on the table.

A ton of armies and a terrain habit...

Most companies do, but the chat on them obviously tends to discussion of their own game systems and not gaming as a whole.

“Good people are quick to help others in need, without hesitation or requiring proof the need is genuine. The wicked will believe they are fighting for good, but when others are in need they’ll be reluctant to help, withholding compassion until they see proof of that need. And yet Evil is quick to condemn, vilify and attack. For Evil, proof isn’t needed to bring harm, only hatred and a belief in the cause.”

I agree, I visit Dakka several times a day even though I don't really play GW games anymore ... mainly because it's the friendliest most helpful gaming community online.

Isn't that Warseer? Sudden disappearances seem a lot less common here.

I'm not sure if you've read this.
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/513517.page

But anyway.

I like LOTR, as you can probably see from my sig - I've got several armies, plus one four times the size of normal play standards. It's simple and fun, but tactically demanding.

WM is also fun, but feels a bit more gimmicky.

Fantasy is fun and so is 40k, but they're . . . too fun. As in, they're quite random. Even LOTR is predictable in some ways, despite their mechanic for fight rolls!

I'm playing more HorizonWar than anything else for the obvious reason that I'm playtesting it for the release of the third volume, BattleGroup in May.

Now - obvious caveat - I am the writer/designer of the rules and the One Pound Wargames imprint belongs to me, so I am biased. However, I can honestly say that I think I'd be mostly playing HorizonWar even without those determining points, for one huge reason: cost.

I have a very large, diverse army, including a dozen mechs of various sizes, two full squadrons of airframes, two companies worth of various sorts of infantry - light, heavy, special forces and mechanized - two squadrons of medium tanks and an artillery battery. And I bought all of them, plus the rules (OK, I didn't have to buy the rules, because I wrote them, but if I had...), plus all the counters, dice and other peripherals needed for the game, for less than half the price of the Warhammer 40,000 rulebook alone.

I like lots of games. But I get more fun per pound from Horizon War than I do from any other game. And based on feedback from my several hundred customers, so do they!

I have invested in more than one game that died due to lack of players. At least I can rely on finding opponents for 40k and whfb.

Actually you cant even rely on "GW" games in general, just 40k and whfb. I have models and armies for Warmaster, Man O War, Mordheim, Battle Fleet Gothic and epic. All of these games are great but good luck finding an opponent.

We've just had campaigns in my club for both Necromunda and Mordheim. We have an on-going Bloodbowl league. Although Epic doesn't have many followers, we do play a lot of 6mm battle games that would happily accommodate Epic players. And there are at least two Inquisitor fans in the club.

I know that interest in the games is of a similar level in the half dozen or so clubs in my region.

If you can't find players of the specialist range, you may be asking in the wrong places.

R.

Know what game is a ton of fun? HOTT. It is literally one of the most fun games ever, and it plays in less than half an hour.

"The horses look mighty thin today! And the men look absolutely starved! Perhaps we should hold a feast to brighten spirits, and fill bellies"- a slightly disillusioned tomb king to his herald.
