The video says high on style low on substance CGI animation on a topic that's been well, and better, covered since "Do Robots Dream of Electric Sheep".

It's been a popular topic for oh-so-many years. Robots are machines and got no ethics, destroy them, kick them, explode them...do anything you want. They are robots, no actual living beings.

It's a short film made by Quantic Dream, who did Heavy Rain and are now working on Beyond Two Souls.

The reason it looks crappy is because of the amount of video compression it has gone through by someone ripping it and putting it on YouTube. The original is a lot better. The animation is tip-top. I think the motion capture on the face was done using the new system they made for Beyond Two Souls.

I don't know if it genuinely is real-time rendering since I have not seen it running in real time, only as a recorded video.

I wasn't engaged by the storyline which I felt was fairly unoriginal.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

There's no full-on nudity, although some of the imagery will raise a few eyebrows around the office.

That said, you're not exactly missing out on much if you don't get the chance to see it.

Basically this; the animation itself is quite good. The actual CGI is... decent. I've seen better, I've seen much, much worse.

The storyline is nothing that hasn't been brought up by about 9,001 science fiction media of various stripes, from Asimov to 80s cyberpunk to about a trillion different Japanese cartoons to the movie Short Circuit. OP: are you attempting to engage in some sort of philosophical discussion about what, exactly, constitutes a living and/or sentient being?

The animation's pretty good, the lead in and story were okay, I was kinda disappointed that the "Kara" short wasn't a teaser for a game and was instead just a tech demo.

In the interest of contributing to this debate, I will preface this with the admission that I'm not terribly well-versed in philosophy or anything like that. I will say that I wouldn't be needlessly abusive or cruel toward an artificial, self-aware being, and I'd probably look down upon anyone who would be. With that said, I wouldn't be terribly upset if someone shut down or destroyed one, though I'd disapprove of the latter if done for no good reason.

Well if something is self aware, why is it less valuable then a naturally created self aware mind?

Take the creation of Kara above, she thinks, feels, and is aware of herself. Why should a life like that be any less valuable then a life like mine?

The problem is not one of "life" exactly, but capability. An artificial life form that is capable of rapidly reproducing itself (or other similar constructs) with abilities on par or superior to those of humans is very threatening.

My first instinct would be to treat artificial life as I would humans... but then I would have to think of its needs, wants, desires, etc, and how compatible that would be to coexistence with human.

Well I'd guess power (food, water), shelter (who wants to rust?), and new experiences and stimulation I'd assume, similar enough to Maslow.

or are you more concerned about.... this?

Although if someone were to make it a proper game, you could do some pretty interesting things with it that you wouldn't normally see in the context of videogaming.

Imagine playing the role of this self-aware gynoid, and instead of having to fight enemies or beat levels, your simple task is to simply 'fit in,' to not lead on to the fact that you're an error, dealing with the nuances of being 'human,' while not being able to actually show it.

It's a shame this video stopped short of doing something very cool. People keep talking about videogames being art or not being art, something like that would really push boundaries, and really show off the medium as more than just a vehicle for action.

And you could have a second story line, you play as Kara, trying to fit in and hide in human society while learning and experiencing as much as possible, a stealth/spy game writ large, but then other levels put you in the boots of the technician who let Kara live, who is now trying to locate her in his off time.

Back on the concept of sentient androids in general, I find the concept of "robotic sexual aids" interesting. Most people just think "Sex toy of the future" but as we get more advanced, where an advanced synthoid like Kara becomes possible, as we move closer to either creating true AI, or having it happen on it's own (The Singularity), then will come the question is such a thing moral? Is programming something to do task X whether it be a robot hooker or a robot dockworker when such a thing will eventually be capable of thought okay? Or the worst form of slavery?

Feel free to ignore the second paragraph, it made a lot more sense in my head.
