Although the rules allow it, I don't think Hail Caesar has to be a massively scaled game. The key thing in the rules is unit frontage; the rule book recommends 160-200mm for a 'standard' size unit. However, I've gone on the recommendation of a lot of players (and actually Warlord themselves) to downsize slightly and make a standard unit 120-160mm wide, 3 or 4 ranks deep. In practice this means (if you are playing Roman era) at 20mm a miniature, 6 miniatures across, 18 or 24 miniatures in total for the unit. For Celts I have widened to 160mm, but spaced the miniatures out more on larger bases to represent their less-regimented nature.

But, the great thing about it is that the rules are so versatile you can get away with whatever takes your fancy.

Also, you can get the starter set and starter Roman army for £48 if you shop around!

My usual sources (suspects?) have it for £54 with free shipping to Australia. Who has it for £48?

Ah.. sorry for the false hope there mate, forgot about the flag! Total Wargamer had it for £48 but with shipping to Aus it takes it to £60-odd.

FYI i use units of 20 dudes on the old GW movement trays for regular units and it works just fine for Hail Caesar.

There's certainly enough in the Conquest Of Gaul starter set to play reasonable games with, since it's pretty flexible.

You can quite comfortably have 2x 15 man units of Romans + Ballista and 3x 20 man units of Celts.

Not that you'll be able to resist the urge to expand in the future anyway

I've got 2 boxes of Romans and 3 boxes of Greeks sitting around, unbuilt. As well as, erm, 4 boxes of WGF and GB Huscarls and Hirdsmen.

Not exactly historical contemporaries, of course. I bought the Vikings to use as Rohirrim and Dunlendings.

More stuff:

NEW: FINNISH T-26E LIGHT TANK

Support your brave Finnish soldiers with this T-26-E Vickers 6-tonner light tank.

Ordered from the British Vickers company, only a handful of Finland’s Vickers 6-tonne tanks were ready in time for the Winter War against the Soviet army with only 26 surviving the war. These remaining light tanks plus many more that were captured from the Finn’s Soviet foe had their optics and turret armament replaced with captured Soviet 45mm guns and co-axial machine guns.

The modifications were completed before start of Continuation War in June of 1941, where they saw combat use with Tank Battalion/Tank Brigade. Some also served in the Lapland war.

The resulting light tank was renamed the T-26E (the E coming from the Finnish word for English, ‘englantilainen‘).

NEW: FINNISH SUPPORT TEAMS

Backing up their newly released T-26E light tanks come two new support teams to reinforce your Finnish force.

This first pack brings a great deal of anti-tank capability to your army in the form of a Panzerschreck team and a duo serving the monstrous Lahti L-39 anti-tank rifle.

Lay down a barrage of suppressive fire with this new medium mortar team. As with many of our Bolt Action miniatures these come with separate heads as part of our Figure Head system. This allows you to choose which head goes with which model and to pose to to suit your own tastes.

There is plenty more support on the way for the brave Finns as they attempt to stave off the attentions of the Great Russian Bear…

NEW: WAFFEN-SS, FINNISH AND JAPANESE DECALS

NEW: THE BOLT ACTION COLLECTION

Of course, you’ll also receive all the special edition miniatures that are only available when you buy these books directly from us here at Warlord!

Just when I am seriously thinking about getting into this game, that deal comes along..

So this works out at about a £30 saving from buying the books (and plastic boxset) separately, and you get the miniatures on top of that?

Hmmmmm.....

It's official:

Italeri will be distributing Italeri-branded Warlord Bolt Action kits,

and Italeri will be designing new plastic 1/56 vehicles for Bolt Action.

"WARLORD GAMES AND ITALERI ANNOUNCE PARTNERSHIP
March 21, 2014 - Bolt Action, News & Announcements - Tagged: Bolt Action
We are thrilled to be able to announce we will be working closely with scale model giants Italeri.
logo_italeri_engWarlord-Logo
Having grown up with Italeri’s fantastically detailed kits it is with great pride that Warlord Games will be working with the talented team at Italeri to bring many more plastic vehicles and terrain pieces to the wargaming world and further enhance our Bolt Action range.
“We’ve spent many hours over the years building the marvellous kits from Italeri so we’re delighted to now be working with them to bring more plastic vehicles to gamers and collectors around the world” say Warlord Games founders, John Stallard and Paul Sawyer.
Giuliano Malservisi and Gian Piero Parmeggiani, the founders of Italeri say “Italeri is very proud to announce an agreement with Warlord Games, a wargames company that produces an amazing range of historical miniatures, and the right partner to develop a new line of plastic in 1/56 scale”.
The first two 1:56 scale vehicles to be made available in plastic between the two companies will be the classic M4 Sherman medium tank and the deadly Panther Ausf. A, with many more already in the pipeline."

I would assume it's so Warlord can utilize Italeri's extensive manufacturing capabilities. And there's some speculation that Warlord's unnamed recent plastic manufacturer (when they switched from Renedra) was actually Italeri all along and this is the big reveal, especially with the Sherman and Panther coming and "many more in the pipeline".
Regardless, Osprey and Italeri-branded Bolt Action products in traditional military-model-and-train-kits hobby stores? Kind of an untapped market there...

*Updated title to reflect this news.*

I have no idea about the train market but I wonder if there will be that much crossover into modeller territory. When I think models, I think fragility.

I like the fat block of resin that is my Hetzer.

Their new kits are pretty good in build/mould quality,

it's just they have a whole load of (very) old stuff still in production which is indeed pretty rubbish

Yup, they also used to do a lot of reboxings of other peoples model kits and were never too fussy over the quality of the originals.

Things like the recent Stuka in 1/48th though are state of the art and its a magnificent kit.

I think this is a great move by warlord.

What jumping is required?

When do you think the last kit Italeri released that was bad? I did a quick survey of kit reviews for 2012 to now releases and people seem to like them.

is this an issue of people looking at kits from 10+ years ago and assuming they're doing the same thing now?

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

If they had announced a partnership with Tamiya, Dragon or Hasagawa, I'd be pleased as punch, but not Italeri. But we'll see. I got a few of their 1:48 kits, like the not-Opel Blitz and a Blackhawk variant, horrible, horrible kits.

I can't help but be a good bit dissappointed at the news.

Not so much because of the partner, rather the choice of making the vehicles in 1/56 scale.

It is an off scale, so many model shops will not bother carrying it. The figures are not 1/56 scale, they are a stylized 28mm size, which does not appeal to many rivet counters. The off scale also prevents most the existing 3rd party accessories (resin, brass and even decals) from being useful...15% size difference is a big thing for finescale.

If the vehicles are done to scale, it will amplify the stylized nature of the figures. Head wont fit through hatches and rifle barrels will be the size of cannon barrels on vehicles. If the vehicles are stylized, that will make them even less desireable for the crossover market.

Hopefully it works out, but I think they would have been better served to make an announcement of switching to 1/48 scale and partnering with Italieri, Tamiya, Hobby Boss and dozens of other existing 1/48 scale manufacturers. That would get them into model stores on day one. Rules wouldnt even change, base sizes stay the same. Just opens things up a lot.

The downside of course that they started with 28mm, so have invested in it already. You also have a lot of 28mm figures from 3rd parties, but metal molds are cheap compared to plastic vehicle kits.

That would be a horrible idea if Warlord decided to switch Bolt Action to 1/48. I have a plethora of Warlord's official Bolt Action 1/56 Sherman, Greyhound, Panzer II, Panzer III, Panzer IV, Panther, 3x 251/1, 1x 251/10, Puma, Opel Blitz that would then be the wrong scale because of an aribtrary decision to go 1/48.

Like I said, they already made their 28mm bed. That is why I dont see this doing any real crossover sales for the game. Right now, it is just an interesting side show. I would be surprised if sales justify Italieri to make a significant investment in future tooling after the initial pop since they wont get much traction in their normal distribution channels.

 BrookM wrote:

I normally get two or three Bolt Action armies across my paint desk each year still. That includes their plastics, vehicles from there and other companies. While they are less heroic than some companies, things like the rifles from their US plastic figures are only a mm or so smaller than the barrel of the their M4 tanks. And that is with a healthy amount of inaccuracy on the tank already.

If you compare what it should be (as finescale modelers will do...getting out calipers to measure things) it becomes even more noticeable. Most of that crowd isnt into broad strokes, things like fenders being plastic are offensive since they are too thick, so they do etched brass and foils to reduce the thickness.
