I thought about this ever since Space Marine the Video Game brought me into this hobby. Why can't SM captains take heavy weapons? I mean maybe chapter relics like A heavy bolter or plasma cannon.

"Do you really think 7th edition was the best edition?"

"Yes, and I'm tired of thinking otherwise."

SM Captains tend to "Lead from the front"

Carrying a Heavy Weapon doesn't really fit with a role like that.

Hard to give order's over the sound of a heavy bolter. Plus, it would stop them being as mobile.

Because HQ characters are supposed to be "heroic", and GW defines "heroic" as "hitting people with a sword". Efficiently shooting people to death from a distance or carrying no weapon at all and devoting your attention to managing the battle is not sufficiently heroic or cinematic.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Well, since Astartes mostly communicate via in-helmet vox systems in combat, it wouldn't be a problem most of the time.

Personally I'd LOVE it if I could get a shooty "über-terminator" character - Assault Cannon + CML + Chainfist! And speaking of heavy bolters and terminators, I wish that was a cheap upgrade option for normal terminators, since storm bolters are a bit lackluster. So basically you'd be able to take one of the current heavy weapon upgrades as usual, but also a heavy bolter upgrade or two.

In DOW2 Captain Boreale used a heavy bolter. Why? Because he was fighting Orks and was smart. Then the hero comes along (you) and you start charging mobs of orks with your chainsword

Mobility would be the main issue I would see with that. Firing a heavy weapon effectively requires most of your attention, and that also takes away from his ability to lead the battle

Uh, Boreale was the crazy-accent guy from Soulstorm. You're thinking of the guy from Dark Crusade whose name starts with a T.

This.

In DoW2, the captains can wield heavy weapons.

It's really just a quirk of the tabletop that they're restricted from them.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Maybe Dawn of war can start making things canon again, Dual handed daemon hammers weren't a thing till after Dawn of War 1 did it.

There's no such thing as canon in 40K.

The Chapter Master of the Salamanders has been depicted as using dual Thunderhammers for a while now.

If you can make a good D100 role, your Captain can wield a heavy weapon if you are playing a game of Rogue Trader (1st ed)...........
