Shamelessly going to nick the conversions used in this thread: (1st page bout half way down)

Think Shan has done a great job on these and I'm looking forward to getting started. Ordered all the bits today but am unsure on which bases to use. I like the look of the 40mm round ones used here but the old Rough Rider models
use cavalry bases. I would think it was a toss up between current bike bases and 40mm round ones. Do you think it matters a great deal which I choose?

In terms of the game, not really, but if you don't mind some extra work, you can try this in a smaller size:

In terms of gameplay, the normal cavalry bases are probably best. They pack nicely so you can get these really rather fragile models into cover a little more easily. Also they aren't as long as the new bike bases. I would only recommend the 40mm or bike bases if you need more space to fit basing materials.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Very nice tutorial Jordan, looks very good end result as well. Not sure if I'm willing to commit the time to do that for these particular models but I've saved that for future models so thanks very much.

I'm sure you are correct Flinty and I'm pretty sure RAW I should field them on cavalry bases but I don't like the idea of having square edged bases in 40k. I've got a couple of my really old SM bikers on rectangle bases and I switched them out for round edged ones. I'm probably being a bit impatient, I'll just wait for my bits to come and have a play around dry-fitting to see what looks best.

Cheers for the input

I felt the same way about square bases in 40k so I did the rounded edge bike bases. They look a whole lot better in my opinion. The swap isn't too terribly painful either

Fair enough I wouldn't get too caught up in RAW problems. The bike bases aren't that much bigger than the normal cavalry, and you get the Tallarn rough riders on 40mm round bases anyway.

Just remember to post pics when you're done.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't the 40mm bases make you less vulnerable to blast weapons?

I don't think so... I don't think you can particularly space them more easily than the normal cavalry bases, and seeing that rough riders die to a mis-directed sneeze I don't actually think its possible to make them less vulnerable to anything

I had the same decision (doing a similar conversion, see my blog thread). Decided to go with the slotted cavalry bases for strength of join, rather than having to pin four hooves to the bike base, or cut slots out of them. I had both available, and just went "sod it, this is way easier" and used the cavalry bases!

Yeah I've been intending to do a Dakka P&M thread for the last couple of years so I'm gonna do the Rough Riders as my first unit in it. Once all the bits have turned up I'll get some photos taken and get it underway. I've magnetized the all my sponsons etc on my Leman Russes so I'll put them in as well. My Forgeworld Enforcer can make an appearance

I'm not really concerned about the RAW on the bases now I've given it some thought. I never play in tournaments, although I might go for the doubles next year to break my virginity. I certainly won't be taking Rough Riders in for that anyway!
Aside from that I only play my brother and close friends so I doubt any heated debates will start over which bases I've got.

With regards to the best fit for the bases I've ordered Empire Medieval Horses so I'd assume they come with a slotta style base. GW dispatched them today so they should be here midweek for me to have a look at and see whats best. Beauty of them being plastic is it doesn't really matter if I decide to take the slotta off as I'll still be able to get a good bond to the base.
