On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Yes some of them were, although the 1st and 2nd edition orks (pre-Brian Nelson and pre-mushrooms) were much more relatable. Really it is more the concept of the orks within the 1st edition books - much more like humans in a sense, in terms of them having a society, social norms and the like. Later editions have characterised the orks as being much more animalistic.

Reading the background for Warpath, it seems that this now largely forgotten background for the orks in 40k has proven a big inspiration for the Marauders - them being the abused survivors of the 'evil' humans also makes a nice spin on things, contrasting a lot with the 40k ork background, and I think might actually make them an evocative faction.

Hi

Managed to get Jake Thornton to answer me some questions on Deadzone... Really cool guy!

Interview - Jake Thornton Talks About Deadzone

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

That's by far the best (most comprehensive) interview I have read surrounding this project so far, thanks a lot for posting.

If I could pick out a couple of points from the interview?

Jake: All movement is by individual model. Each model can make one long or two short actions per turn, and a move action is a short action that moves the model one square.

The Alpha rule set has a modified i-go-u-go turn sequence with interrupts and overwatch, but this does not scale as well as I would like to larger battles. The turn sequence currently being tested is a modified alternate action system that has several advantages whilst retaining the speed of play and the ability to make co-ordinated actions.

Interesting! So it sounds like it might be possible at this point that the i-go-u-go might be dropped?

Other factors are perhaps more subtle. One of the more important balancing factors is the set of missions available to each faction. In Deadzone, you win the game by collecting a given number of victory points before your opponent, and these are listed on the mission cards. What you get victory points for varies from mission to mission, and each faction has a different mix of mission cards. The Rebels, for example, are often interested in collecting loot from the battlefield, rather than just killing the enemy. They have bigger political issues to deal with and their efforts in the Deadzone are aimed at recovering supplies.

The style of a force depends on a variety of factors. Missions are one factor, the available troops are another as is the unique composition of each faction’s battle deck. Added together, this makes for a very different play experience for each side.

Really like the sound of this. Anything that can move the game away from "24 inches apart, roll to go first, last man standing wins" gets a big thumbs up from me. Also going to be intriguing what the different faction aims are (I'm certain that the Forge Fathers will revolve around them 'delving too deeply'? ) - and also balancing these against one another.

Jake: It does indeed. I thought that it would give me a better game if I took the best bits of each format and rolled them together rather than restricting myself to one source. I’m also pinching a couple of concepts from video games.

Any idea what he was referring to with the highlighted bit?

Finally, great to hear that concerns about the experience/improvement of your units has been put to bed with this interview. The narrative games sound like a nice idea also.

(PS - you forgot to ask him why he got rid of the ponytail? )

This kickstarter has prompted me to download and read the Warpath 2.0 Rulebook. I really enjoy the setting. Kind of remind me of the Firefly universe with a 100 alien races added, or an early Galactic Empire, without the pesky Jedi.

As for the 40K universe, GORKAMORKA sold me on Orks being sentient green fungus. .

He could mean cover based shooting mechnics, such as vollying over walls/through windows, blind firing from cover or "snapping" to/from cover to cover, think of games like Gears of War, Uncharted and modern FPS's. Such games are very popular at the moment and deadzone kinda fits the "look" of them, just a guess.

If only it turned out like the PS3 game Vanquish, power sliding across entire levels.

It could also be like Xcom: Enemy Unknown which is just a small bit more than a re-skin away from being Deadzone: The Video Game.

Not that I would have any issue with that...

Don't forget to add a less predictable plot (the volunteer, enough said) and a less disappointing end-game boss fight to that list.

Yes although this is going back 15 years when he worked for WD, so he might well have not had it for at least a decade or more

Deadzone Scenery Preview! New Stretch Goal!
Update #23 · May 6, 2013 · 37 comments

As this bank holiday draws to a close we’ve got a special video for you previewing what’s coming later in the week… Feast your eyes on this!

This is just one segment of a much larger video that shows off the different types of build you can make. Of course, you can make them however you want so there's an endless amount of possibilities!!
Alpha Rules Feedback

The Alpha Rules have been out for a couple of days now and Jake has been busy publishing articles over on Quirkworthy.com. If you haven’t already, check out his latest posts:

- Deadzone Alpha - I'm listening...

- I think we have a winner

We’ve been amazed by the amount of feedback you've left to help us refine the game and the lengths some of you have been going to playtest the game with many of you building your own boards!

By Christian Schlumpberger

By Rich Jones

By Matt Gilbert

These images have been taken from the Containment Protocol - DZ Fanatics page. Got your own playtest board? Post it up!

Jake has also been busy doing interview too, being at Beasts of War today in between answering questions from Zweischneid on Pins of War. This is a thorough and detailed interview, so be sure to check it out!
New Stretch Goal!

Since we’re so close to the getting the alternative Goblin Sniper, here is our next stretch…

$355,000 – Plague 3rd Gen with Heavy Machinegun

By the time the Plague reaches its third generation, its mutating effects are considerably lessened, meaning a much higher number of victims survive to join the ranks of the infected. These third-generation troopers still undergo a physical alteration, but their minds are left almost intact. As a result, they are the only warriors in the Plague ranks that are capable of operating machinery, and quickly scavenge weapons to provide covering fire to their bestial masters.

If we hit this goal, we will be able to throw in an additional 3rd Gen with heavy machinegun, a Plague specialist capable of laying down a lot of covering fire whilst the big guys get into melee (a useful skill we’re sure you’ll agree!) into every Plague faction starter. That means 1 extra figure at Scout (provided you’ve picked Plague as your faction,) 1 at Recon ($100) and 1 at Strike Team ($150!)
And finally...

We're getting to the point now where we can start looking at the cool new toys for the factions - perhaps an Orc Pyro, a plagueified Teraton or perhaps a Rebs medic... but what would you like to see? Drop us your suggestions for what models we could make below!

Love the first table. Are those sprue bits for grid corners? either way, it looks brilliant.

And there is an outside chance we may hit $147.5k before the night is out. Just $1.5k left. With any luck this should take us right up to around Wednesday and then they can drop off a fresh big stretch-goal alongside the terrain pledges and add-ons. The activity from that should be able to eat through $20k-25k pretty quickly. My outside hope is more building sprues added to the pledge level, always nice to have a few of those sprinkled in.

Also, just had a quick look through the comments section on the KS. What's the deal with Brian Blessed, has he become the official mascot of this game or something?!

I think it is the way a select group of crap bags keep other folks from participating.

You guys piqued my curiosity so I went and had a look at the comments. Dayum but that guy is a walking billboard for why I don't have a twitter account. I'm surprised he hasn't told everyone how big his last poop was or what he ate for breakfast.

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do

As terrible at the kickstarter comments thread is, once in a while someone from Mantic will appear and answer questions, so I try to skim through it once a day or so.

Now showing various models from the previously adandoned projects!

Painting total as of 3429/2024: 56 plus a Deva King statue
Painting total as of 12/31/2024: 107 plus a set of modular spaceship terrain and two walkers and a quad mech and five giants

It is easy to skim for them too, just look for the comment that is shaded all in blue.

It helps when you're trying to avoid the nonsense.

So I do that, and also look for DaveC and Orlando too!

I won't bother. I don't have time to filter through a crap ton of garbage for a nugget of info. The comment section is useless to me at this point.

Apart from the usernames and avatars (which are easily ignored), I haven't seen any Brian Blessed-centric chat on there in nearly a week. There still might be the odd mention, but it's nowhere near as bad as it was in those first few days.

“Good people are quick to help others in need, without hesitation or requiring proof the need is genuine. The wicked will believe they are fighting for good, but when others are in need they’ll be reluctant to help, withholding compassion until they see proof of that need. And yet Evil is quick to condemn, vilify and attack. For Evil, proof isn’t needed to bring harm, only hatred and a belief in the cause.”

There are a few people there who have decided Mantic have to create a whole Brian blessed themed flying faction with him as the leader which is still pretty annoying but better then how it was last week.
