I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

All this is opinion of course:

8th edition and upcoming 8th edition

Among 8th edition the "best" book so far in terms of playability, synergy and competitiveness is Vampire Counts

Ogre Kingdoms are very competitive but personally I hate the models and the background.

Empire, Warriors of Spiky Bits, Orcs and Goblins: Solid books

Chaos Demons: Internal balance is very poor, if the chaos god Nurgle appeals to you then go for it, Tzeentch lol not so much.

High Elves will be out in a month

Lizardmen out in the fall. I am a long time player of 8 armies and the LM are one that I have found to be good to very good in every edition since they were reintroduced in 5th.

Tomb Kings: Fail, but I cant be bothered to write all the defects of this book, suffice it to say I like to have at least an even chance of winning against most armies.

7th edition books
Skaven: really good
Dark Elves: really good
Beastmen: mediocre but you can win with them if your dedicated and disciplined
Brettonians and wood elves are desperate for a new book
Dwarfs: boring to play and play against, seriously need a new book and major rethink

Without a doubt bro, go with FoW.

Fantasy battles is a joke.

If all you want to do is crush someone and not make any friends, by all means go with Fantasy Battles. ( IF you have PLENTY of money to burn )

The ONLY game that doesnt have a problem with making ENTIRE ARMIES UNBEATABLE!!

If you want to have fun playing a wargame, play Flames of War.

Flames of War, I'd recommend. I recently switched over, it is very nice and cheap and the tactical nature of the game is very refreshing compared to 40k. I don't know if there's much more that fantasy offers over 40k, 40k is becoming a lot like fantasy anyway.

But it really depends on what you want. If you just want really cool models to paint, like the genre, and don't care much about cost or gameplay, go Fantasy.

If you like WW2 and having large battles with a lot of tanks, don't have a lot of money to spend, and battles on terrain that really feels like terrain, and a fun, tactical ruleset that is not just 'shoot at each other' or 'run up and kill stuff'' then go for flames of war.

Bit of a strange question. The two systems are not even remotely comparable so trying to answer which is better is impossible. They both have different aims.

Of the two I much prefer Flames of War, but then again I much prefer Historical gaming to Fantasy gaming so I would say that.

Rather than asking which is the better system ask yourself what sort of games you would prefer to play, fantasy games or WW2 games, whichever one appeals to you most is the one to go for.

Do you want to Push around the BF a 15mm tank, and russian snipers and ww2-vietnam war themed warriors/soldiers or a 28mm scale (54mm to be precise) dragon and 28mm warrior with spears and bows and casting magic?

I would also say if you end up deciding to go for WW2 then look at some of the other rule systems such as Battlegroup Kursk or Bolt Action even Rapid Fire, find out what local clubs play and go from there.

Absolutely, completely agree with this. Obviously Fantasy isn't going to float your boat if you want a historical game and to push tanks around, and visa-versa!

From a completely neutral perspective, I would probably go for FoW on the grounds that it will offer a more varied experience when compared to the difference between 40k and WFB.

What.

Fantasy, and its armies, are not broken, not by an extremely long way. Compared to 40k, Fantasy is almost completely balanced. There are four or five armies in Fantasy that can be considered "Top Tier", depending on your opinion, each one has advantages over armies in lower tiers but this only means they're more forgiving and there's more ways to win. I've routinely seen Wood Elves, Bretonnia and the like, defeat armies of Lizardmen, Dark Elves etc. Fantasy's not like 40k where you can tell who is going to win a battle purely from looking at the army list.

Of course, the two systems, FoW and WHFB, are very different. I presume, since you are asking the question, that neither's aesthetics appeals to you more than the other. In that case, the deciding factor will be cost and playerbase. FoW is cheaper than Fantasy, but, normally, it's harder to find a FoW game. Of course, it does depend on your local meta. So I do some research first of all. Find out who plays what in your area and find out the respective costs of an army you'd like to collect.

Undoubtedly, Flames of War.

If you ever want to play fantasy wargames, there are much better ones than warhammer fantasy. And you can collect far cheaper armies with not worse minis. You can even double historical armies as fantasy ones.

For example, Perry Miniatures, Conquest games or Fireforge medievals.

This is a really strange question...FoW and Fantasy are two utterly different games. One is a historical wargame, the other is a fantasy wargame. One uses miniatures of tanks and snipers and half-tracks, the other uses Orcs and Elves and Vampires. It's like asking someone if you should eat and apple or an orange; each has its own unique merits and drawbacks, and they are totally different from each other. Really, it all comes down to taste.

FoW is undoubtably a better rule set but they are totally different games.
