I can't restrain myself and have only one army. I can get in the mood with almost all of them and instantly get an conversion, scheme or theme idea I find neat.

My main army is Tyranids and I have around 2.5K of them but I also have Black Templars built out of multiple Black Reach sets and few vehicles, pure Nurgle CSM + Daemons started, many Orks and DV chaos, few Necrons and few Dark Eldar. Also full Skaven army.

Full armies I plan pure CC mono Khorne CSM + Daemons, Deathwing + Grey Knights (8 Terminators units as troops heh), Necron Immortals army, Cadians mechanised army, second Tyranids army that is as weak as possible, mechanised Orks.

Allied detachments I plan Vostroyans, Sisters, Fateweaver and some daemons, FW keeper of secrets and some daemons, Imperial fists, Dark Eldar.

I'm pretty sure I forgot something.

How do you do it? I mean having one army, do you get urges for another one and fight it, or one is enough?

The allure of building whatever i want and calling it whatever i want as orks keeps me going. Now that im at the point where i can play w/o proxies (99% of the time anyway) im kitbashing/scratchbuilding everything so my army stands out even more than most since its all "new" models.
I already have a bikerboss and a Deffdredd that catches peoples eyes, i must have an army that does the same!

I know your pain friend. I've been playing 40k for almost 3yrs and in that time I've played almost every army and everyone of those armies I built into Apocalypse lol. I can't stay with one. Ally rules made it so much worse!

I've found that not reading other army books help, and also taking the building/painting process slow. I try to buy a unit, build it, paint it, THEN buy something else. Usually my lack of spare time helps to drag things out. Heck, I've been playing GKs since they got updated. Then again with all the needs they've taken I'm thinking about trading them in for DA lol

Something else my friend pointed out is to simply play SMs. You can use just about all the models for almost all the armies and all you have to do is adjust point costs.

Bah, impossible Well, ok, it wouldn't be, but since there's more than 1 cool army, I indulge myself. With already having BT, SM, Orks, CSM and a bit of BA, the only thing keeping me from getting some SoB is the ridiculous price on the models.

I constantly cycle through armies. Rarely do I even open the boxes. I've owned massive ork armies several time and then just sell them.

Its bigger than a breadbox

Whenever I think of getting a new army, I wait. The shiny syndrome passes. The only one I couldn't help make was a IG squig army. I mean come on! It's squigs! Though I had to buy many other company models for cannon fodder squigs. Just try to not give on the syndrome. I tried it and now I am lacking a nurgle army and managed to stop my space wolves after I bought an iron priest.

My armies: Tyranid, Nurgle/Dark Eldar and (hopefully) a squig one.

I try to restrain myself to at least making a force 1500 points before starting a new one. Besides, I try to really find new ideas and angles on the armies I already play. Find something new in something old. I'd say, focus on two or three armies and try to build more and more different list types, themed armies. Heck, with all the metal/plastic/FW kits out there, one could make several completely different IG armies (Cadians, Elysians, Vostroyans, Pratorians to name a few). Find what's new in what's old.

Doesn't work for me, the ideas get stuckt in my head. I could buy just the exact models I want and stop but that is ussualy more than allied detachment but less than an army, did someone at GW surveyed and calculated that crap?

Not to mention for Deathwing army I already have the fluff and scheme for my custom chapter and wargear figured out. For Khorne army I know the units, scheme, conversions, tactics. For Necrons I just want that pre - wardian silent evil marching, I have scheme poses and composition for them planned. Cadians I just love Valkyries and Leman Russes, Orks I love everything. I'm beyond saving I guess.

Good advice but trouble is I'm not bored by armies I already have. I fiddle with my Nids all the time exactly how you describe it, doesn't seem to exclude urges for new stuff in my case.

While Orks are pretty much the make your own army, there's plenty of armies where you can do the same.

Different patterns of vehicles for IG and SM springs to mind.

I stayed with Eldar only for about 4 years. Then something snapped in the last year and now I have 4 good sized armies. Anyway before gak hit the fan I accumulated 2250 points of Eldar.

First I decided that I needed some Vostroyans, because their models are gorgeous. So now I can field about 1250 points of vossies. Which is actually nice, because I end up allying them into my Eldar for more competitive matches. Plus my Bastion and / or aegis lines look less foolish when manned by Vossies.

Then I started Chaos Space Marines, because I wanted to work on my converting since I enjoyed converting my Autarch, and Jetlocks, but there wasn't anything else that my Elves needed converted. So now I've ended up with about 1500 points of slaanesh Marines, which I plan on taking up to 1850 soon.

Most recently I started Bretonnia, I think I was feverish on a Game of Thrones Binge or something. Anyway the Fantasy community near me is pretty nice. I can probably eek out around 2500 if I use my converted IoB hippogryph lord, otherwise about 2K of Ponymen....

It sneaks up on you!

I thought i had a firm limit of 2 armies. GK and Nids but somehow I have Necrons too. I almost bought some guard for allies but then I whipped myself and ate some bad oysters as a form of negative reinforcement.

I should have just stuck to 2 armies but honestly I find all 3 fun.

I really will stop myself from ever having another army unless I trade the GKs or Necrons for another army.

I only really started playing since the beginning of the year and I have had to restrain myself from starting a new army whenever I see a cool model or a list that sounds fun to play. I made a rule for myself that I wouldn't start a new army until I had a good 2000 point list for my current project. However, I already broke that little rule when the new demons got released as they would make good allies for my CSM. I finally see why everybody calls it plastic crack.

I try to avoid spending a lot of time poring over the models from other armies, and focus on the ones in mine. Temptation can be hard to resist if you look at the product lines or the codexes too much.

That way, at least, I can focus on continuing to build my Guard army without the money/time-drain of a dozen side projects.

I don't have unlimited funds so it's been easy for me to stick to limit my army's. When it comes to painting, I like my armies to look clean and detailed. Not rushed. I have four armies, but I have been playing for almost 10 years. My favorate army is the Necrons, and for the past year, thats ALL I have focused on, have no plans on stopping anytime soon.

Yep but the only models I buy new are the ones I plan to convert. The rest I buy used and usually the cheaper ones that are badly painted or put together, also 3 of my planned armies are based on starter sets (I don't count Deathwing as I'm going to build it based on Knights which btw is why the army is postponed waiting for for better times). I'm going to take my time with all of this and give as little money to GW as possible.

I know just how you feel. My room is literally littered with models Ive bought on an urge then moved on. Just around me now I can see:

Two fleets of dystopian wars still in their boxes
Two battlefleet gothic fleets half built half just left in boxes
Two firestorm armada fleets
Vampire counts army barely started
Dark eldar army barely started
Judge dredd models half done
Grey knights army unpainted
blood bowl team unpainted
Skaven army unpainted

And im not kidding thats just in the 1 meter around my computer lol they are just everywhere and every time i look at them I want to kick myself for been so stupid. Problem is im very fickle if thats the word. I watch a film about heroic soldiers suddenly i want to really collect imperials then a few days later im bored of them and i see something or think of something else i suddenly love and have to have :( Its gotta so bad at one point ive had to ask people i know to take away my money so i cant go and spend it. I feel its probably got something to do with retail therapy makes you feel good to go start a new army you know.

I want to just sell everything im not using but i do still like them its just that i have no time for so many and will probably not use them for months if not years. So I will be watching this thread lol I need some advice on this subject too.

I know exactly what you mean but replace other miniatures with boxed games from FF, rulebooks spanning the last 25-30 years and beside which you'll see in my sig, i have 4k of skaven, 3k of high elves, and 3.5k of dwarves. the rest is weird stuff. it's literally piled or in bookshelves as far as the eye can see (my room/office sapce is rather large so it is fairly far) and every d&d book since 1.5 (i think the one that was released in the 80's), some judge dred, the rest is alien, predator spider man comic and enough stuff to fill 3 hobby shops. but alas none gets used. so i know what you mean by having alot of stuff

When i was younger, and didn't have annoying things to worry about like a mortgage, and kids, my model collection blossomed out of control. now, while my model collection isn't as large as some ive seen, i so have an extra control mechanism who has the power of veto. while my wife is perfectly happy to but 'little me' and paint them, and she goes out of her way to kick me out of the house every sunday if she can, she does insist that i paint one army entirely before collecting another one. thankfully these veto powers have so far not been applied to buying additional units for the army i am currently working on, so my collection is growing steadily.
The only thing that has me annoyed is that my current army project is Imperial fists, while my favourite army is Tau, and they just got their new codex and some funky looking units, so my weekend, thus far has been spent frantically painting

In part it's a personality thing.

Otherwise, for me, I've been playing guard all these years and am still going strong because there is STILL new stuff to find out and try. Still new combinations and new ways of thinking about things.

A single codex comes with a lot of depth to it. If you put in the work, rather than skimming off the obvious stuff from a bunch of codices, you can find some real gems.

My first and main army is Nids, I have roughly 5k points. Compared to my secondary army, CSM, I am more comfortable with Nids, I can optimize quite a few good lists in 6th, and I have a much greater chance of winning with Nids. Chaos is fun to mess around with, but I feel like until I am unbeatable with Nids (which is a highly unlikely occurence) they will always be my main army.

Play larger battles. The minimum we play is 1500 and that is normally for team games, so each player has 1500. Our average is 1750, and occassionally we go 2000.

This means you'll have more models, and if you are like me and change your list out constantly, you'll generally need about 3000 points for a given army before you are satisfied. As a result, I've never had more than 2 armies at any one time.
