I make it. I bought a food processor at a garage sale for $5. just cut your foam down into bite sized chunks and let the processor do the rest.

Solid, thanks. I made some rubble on a smaller scale recently by throwing some old pencils and sprue into my smoothly maker. It's probably toxic now and I've gone deaf but it was totally worth it. Maybe.

It will do sprues, but it chews up the blade faster and yes, is deafening. Don't do this at 3 am. Your wife will find a new use for the blender.

EDIT: I don't know if it matters to anyone, but I've compiled all the pics into a gallery. You can find it here.

Hey all. I would apologize for the thread necro, but A: it's my thread, and B: it's 24 hrs short of a true necro anyway.

I work for a school district, so the last month has been crazy. Things are finally settling down, and I've finally gotten some more work done.

So: to the project.
I've got the first board rubbled, based, and painted. All that's left for this is details (posters, more water effects) and some greenstuff sandbags around the firing positions. I want to get more done, so I can do a lot of bags at once, rather than piecemeal.

Detail of the dirt caked onto the uneven wall shelves.

Firing shelf stairs.

Ammo crate nook.

I also made good headway on board two, the artillery position:

Thanks again for all the advice and kind words! Keep 'em coming!

Yea!! The updates have returned!

I would totally love to see the the board once all the extra detailed are put in.

And board 2 is coming about really nicely!

So engrossed on the pics on the first board, I almost forgot there are a bunch more yet to come!

I have been toying about with the idea of 3 10men sternie squad w/combi weapons with Pedro, chappie and a librarian with null zone and done shield all in drop pod

Updates!

@Casey's Law: Yes, I think I will be casting bags, simply because I'll need a mess of them.

Updates:

Flooring down on most of the second board.

It's small progress, but I'd rather get back in the habit of updating regularly. I'm sure you'd all appreciate the same.

Now is the going to be a mostly Trench board or will you be adding anything else like a bombed out building mixed in.

i's lootin this ideer, right proper an quik like. dis'd be a gret way to fun'l 'umies in ta da firin lines o' da boyz. actually, my FLGS doesn't have but one or two trench works pieces, so yeah, i'm going to be paying real close attention to this thread and the stuff your doing so i can make some of my own to donate to the store. it's also nice that it won't cost much to do this but time, and time is something i do and don't have plenty of, all depends on the time of the year, and the part of the year when i have the most amount of time is fast approaching.

keep up the good work, looks great. here's an idea for you, Tamiya makes a sand bag kit - item # 35025, for $5 and change, a German Jerry Can Set - Item #35315 for $7 and change, Jerry Can Set Kit - Item #35026 for $5 and change, another Jerry Can Set - Item #32510 for $12 and change, along with several other accessory kits that might be right up your alley for decorating your trenches. you probably already know this, but just in case it slipped your mind.

@ deadmeat85: The plan is to build 16 panels or so of this, enough to fill half a 4x8 board, and then begin developing transition panels, into swamp, jungle, desert, no man's land (for insertion into a second trench set) or city outskirts. Eventually, I'd like to do this same concept with a series of city buildings, parks, and avenues. One gargant-sized project at a time...

@ SebastionSynn: Thanks for the Tamiya finds! They're perfect. You may just see a barrel with your name on it.

Now! More updates:

Got some more wooden siding up.

Which means panel two is coming along nicely. (Ignore the board underneath it. That's my old 3x6 table...)

Also, meet panel 3:

This panel will have an angular firing ledge, similar to the full-side firing ledge of panel one.

This looks like an awesome game table! I'm going to have to add it to my queue of stuff to steal for a later date!

Out of curiosity, what are you building them all on top of? Looks like some kind of wood. How heavy, and how prone to warping is it?

@Jimsolo: It's described by Home Depot, Lowes, etc. as 3/16 in. Tempered Hard Board.

$13.98 US currently for a 4x8 sheet of the stuff. In longer lengths, it can bend, but at these sizes I find it's similar to working on a ceramic floor tile.

thanks Brah! as for the ones that i will be working on, your name suggests to me more of a recruitment poster, something like "Daemon Hunter, wants you for the Inquisition! See your local Inquisition recruiter today, or stand accused of heresy!". now whether i go as in depth as you with all those boards, probably not, my FLGS only uses 3' x 6' tables, so for me it will be two sets of three trenchworks on one end of the table, and another set for the other end, and then a two foot area of no man's land in between. another option would be to build a city of death on two sets as well.

Im also in the planing stages of my own modular board. Hence why I asked about other building and terrain. I really like your idea about building up the height with the foam and I'm going to use it on my board as well. Lol, I have about enough planed out to build about 8 4ft x 6ft board. Hopefuly by the new year i will be able to start the as you say "Gargant-sized project."

Looking forward to the final board.

Even if you're going to cast them, I'd recommend Milliput over GS for making your sandbags - you get more Milliput for your money, after all.

Really? I would have thought you'd be casting in resin using a silicon mould. It's the correct tool for the job really. Putty is for sculpting for a reason. Of course if you want to quickly pressmould them then manipulate them into position then you should certainly use milliput and oyumaru.

The current plan is to make gs masters and make either oyumaru or silicone molds for resin. I don't have any oyu right now, but I've been looking for any excuse to buy some. This seems like the time.

Hey all. Sorry for the silence. New job is dominating my timeline for now, so I'll have a bit less time to focus on this.

BUT:

Oyumaru is ordered, and a bigger batch of resin is on its way as well. I was almost out. I've started a few demo sand bags, but until I get home, I won't have pics up.

Your work is worth waiting for. Incredibly inspiring, and the skill you have is impressive.

** edit **

Also, if you have already explained this I apologize- what are you using to weather the wood? It's some of the best wood weathering I can remember seeing.

For wood weathering, I'm doing... nothing.

Seriously. It's just a sepia wash with either GW gryphonne or Game color sepia wash. What makes it look like that is that I don't prime it. I leave the wood raw, and essentially stain it, rather than paint it.

Ah! Ok. That's really good to know. I use similar sticks (courtesy of Starbucks... by the fistful) for my WFB buildings / fences / etc. I've been priming black and then build up color via drybrush. This sounds so way much easier and looks great. I think I'll make another WFB building and have a go at this. I'm bored w/ my current projects anyway and a fresh project might be the kicker I need to get back into things.
