Ive heard rumors that new afika books are on the way, but have not been able to get more information. I was looking at getting into africa, but don't want to get invested if new stuff is coming soon.

Their plan for the year doesn't seem to involve mid war

The North Africa book is still quite usable, the list for my Italian Bersaglieri are from it, and to my knowledge the other lists in the book are at no major disadvantage.
Also, it will not be invalidated when they do release a new version, so you would not have to worry about having a useless book when they release the new one.

Well, late last year one of the Battlefront bigwigs let it slip in an interview that they were heading back to the Mid-war period this fall.
Whether this still holds depends on how their deadlines end up matching their plans this year. Last year pretty much everything got pushed, resulting in the Market Garden compilation getting pushed to after Christmas many places.
However, there is good news for Mid-war players. In the latest news bulletin from battlefront, they state that:
Mid-war Arsenals:
Version Three Update
"Phil has updated the arsenals for the mid-war books: North Africa and Eastern Front. The new arsenals correct errors in the originals and bring them in line with the latest version of the rulebook.
He is currently working on updating the intelligence briefings themselves and you will be able to download these over the next while. "
This info found on the Battlefront website.
Here is a link to the arsenal lists: http://www.flamesofwar.com/Portals/0/Documents/Briefings/Mid-war/Mid-War-Arsenals-V3.pdf
So over the next weeks/months, it seems that the updated lists from the North Africa book will be getting updated and released as PDF´s.
For the past two year at least, this has been the precursor to new books. This was the case with Grey Wolf/Red Bear, as well as the Market Garden book set.
Anyways, that´s my take on it, I´ve been gaming FOW for the past 4 years, and retailing it for 2, so others may have different/more enlightened views.

In terms of the modifications and arsenal updates, do you know if the old designation of Italian Trench guns has gone for good? Are solothurns, 47mm and 65mm AT guns just man portable now?

Since I´ve never played Italians I can´t say for sure, but looking at the arsenal entries, it does look like it... The 65/17 is classed as light, the others as man-packed.

Yes, no "Trench Gun" designation on any of those, they are man-packed (and light for 65/17).
Actually, there was no Trench Gun designation in the North Africa book (though I have never used the 65/17 so I could be wrong on that, but I don't remember seeing the rules anyway)

To back up what Xanthos says, I asked about this on the FoW forum a while ago and was told that there will be a PDF update of the mid war books at some point.

I believe I saw a link on the FoW site saying that North Africa (along with two other V2 books) were updated with a new pdf.
