Sadly I am seriously contemplating leaving Warhammer 40k for one of the other gaming systems. It has not been a easy choice, I love the game, I think it has great promise, amazing potential but Games Workshop has largely ruined the enjoyment for me. I don't want to look forwards to spending the rest of my hobby playing life watching a procession of 'flavour of the month' books coming out each more powerful than the last just to sell models. I don't want to have to deal with the discriminatory pricing policies I encounter, not only in Australia though it is bad here with even E-books getting at least a 40% 'australian tax' courtesy only of GW on them, but notice that despite significant profit margins on there models the consumer gets little reward back.

I am feeling rather cold and cynical over the whole business to put it bluntly and almost regret having forked out for the eldar army I see sitting lined up on my hobby table.

If you're not enjoying it, time to go.

If you're looking for someone to talk you out of quitting, they'll be along shortly.

Perhaps mildly hoping for, I have allot of time and effort invested in it. I certainly don't want to quit the hobby community however and am going to be casting around for any games that might give me close to the feel of it, without the GW business policy attached.

Can I have your stuff?

When GW drops a new codex there will always be bandwagon jumpers. As far as the Australian tax that's also your country doing from what I see.

No, thats all GW. As I said even there E-books cost more when ordered directly from black library. Try it out, the USA and AUS $ are about equal right now. Click on a book and then say 'Australia' and you'll see it jump to like $14 or $16 from $10. Some box sets jump from like $50 to around $80.

It sucks that you are leaving, but one note, they have seemed to stop their "Bigger and better each codex" thing, the last 3 books are all fairly well balanced. But I agree the price is creeping up, and I hear australia has it worse than most for that.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do instead

Wait? There's actually people buying and playing with new releases from Games Workshop?

My issue isn't with the new releases so much as with the codex creep they push in each. It gets tiring after the 3 editions I have been interested in 40k which is no weakness in the game system but rather a marketing strategy thats quite predatory I feel.

Well, it appears to have hit the high water mark with Grey Knights.

Now, previously useless units within a codex might become decent or even great, but as others have said, the last three releases seem to be pretty decently balanced and not OTT.

I feel bad for Australians, its one thing to pay alot for a hobby, but its something else to get shafted for every GW product you get. Thats not from my experience, but ive seen several threads from Australians and their price differences.

What I would say is dont put as much stock in GW as a company, ive never had expectations from them really, so theyve never been dissapointed. I know that doesnt work for everyone, especially if youre heavily invested financially or emotionally with your armies. (Which most of us are), or have bought from the store for 20+ years.

I wouldnt say quit, take a break, a breather of some sort, im sure the things that originally drew you to the games will once again begin to do so. Try other games, get new hobbies, and if you come back feeling fresh and enjoying it, Great! if not, then you probably made the right choice. Just my two cents, hate to see someone quit the hobby entirely because of GW or their actions. Best of Luck.

The past 3 have actually been pretty balanced, so we may be seeing a new age who knows...

But I feel horrible for you guys down there. I'd hate to live through those kind of prices

Probably a good idea, any idea what other wargames might scratch the itch? other than battletech which I already play a bit of.

Quit the game if you don't like the rules.

If you don't like the prices, please enjoy selecting any model you desire from a number of reputable ebay dealers.

If you don't like the models, buy some lovely counts-as models from any number of reputable and desirable competitors.

The only reason to quit the game is if you aren't having fun playing. If you're offended by GW's business practices, by all means, do not purchase from them; if you still want to play the game, just maneuver around buying from GW directly.

Unfortunately when it comes to codecies, I have little option but to buy from GW if and when say, the eldar get updated which is looking to be soon. And its more than not liking the pricing, its partially not wanting to show my support for GW when it returns so little to its fanbase and now actively discourages many things that helped get the game started in the first place, taking actions that broad cast loud and clear that they are only in it for the money. I don't like people who behave like that, I don't like companies that behave like that.

Games Workshop is pretty awful, especially to their Australian customers. Still, if you enjoy playing the game and have people to play with, I would not suggest quitting just because GW is lousy. Use models from outside of GW's range, buy from friends if they have figures that they're looking to part with, and measure your purchases carefully (proxy units before you buy them, buy what you need for your list instead of ancillary stuff that looks cool at the time, etc).

The most recent Codices have all been pretty balanced, though there are a few no-brainer options among them (Riptides? Baledrakes? ). Still, compared to the days of Necrons, Grey Knights and 130 point Vendettas, GW is getting better at writing non-abusive books. You might be feeling a pinch because the Eldar Codex is ancient, but don't fret. If the rumor mill is to be believed, the Poncy Space Elves should be getting some love before too long.

Never thought I would see the day when someone referred to the tau book as flavor of the month.

Either adapt or get left behind. GK? I played against them when they came out, no problem, same with nercons, DA, CSM and daemons. If you cannot make small changes to your force to deal with the changes to the edition and/or overall meta, you probably shouldn't play.

It's been at least four minutes since the last "I hate GW thread". This one brings both compelling and intriguing new content.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

My two cents:
If you want quit 'cause you don't like the rules or more simply you don't have fun anymore playin' it, go on.
It's a good choice.

If you want quit for the GW (IMHO poor) prices politics, don't.
Ebay is the way, or Maelstrom (but I heard it's closed now, dunno) or others.
Still, don't quit.

For the Codex thing, now seems like GW chose to make the new ones balanced.

Codex creep has been a blatant lie for years now. Just ask eldar, tyranid, dark angels, tau, chaos, orks or dark eldar how overpowered their current codex was when it came out. Furthermore, the idea that GW makes up rules just to sell models is meaningless in a world where GW doesn't actually MAKE models for its new units. The guard codex has been out for 5 years now, and we still don't have a medusa or colossus model - both of which were "new" additions to the codex.

If you're getting sick of people getting excited by new things, then don't play a game that is continually generating new content. Go find something stale to play with no innovation whatsoever, like chess, or go, or battleship.

40k has a great return on investment compared to SO many things, given that it's a durable good. And it's very comprehensive, what with gaming and hobbying and community.

If you've got a bad attitude about it regardless, then I'm sure there's someone out there who is more than willing to buy your minis off of you for cheap who will get more enjoyment out of them.

If you feel ripped off by GW but you still want to play warhammer get your stuff from different places. I haven't bought a model from them in about 12 months. I just order them cheaper from other sites or eBay. You can also buy count as models from places like ultra forge. No need to leave unless you particularly dislike the game or REALLY hate GW.

The Tau, DA and Demon codexes are not really examples of codex creep. Demons are hardly worth playing.

If you dont like the game then just sell your stuff or shelve it for awhile. You may make some new friends later that you want to game with.

Same here, I left GW for Infinity a couple months ago because of the rules and gameplay. But I occasionally will buy some GW stuff to paint. My only problem with switching games was finding a 28mm sci-fi game that had a large fan base and with good mini's which Infinity fits there perfectly for me.

The Australian minimum wage is much higher then that say, in the USA. Cost of living is also much higher, everything from electronics to cars are more expensive in this way. Going to stop buying those too? GW want their cut as well, it sucks, but it's life.

+1
It never ceases to amaze me how people seemingly overlook the basics like wages and basic cost of living and your own government's import tarifs.
Hell, Canada is almost as bad as Oz... (not quite as awful as you guys down under, but still pretty horrid when you compare the same item's US price to the Canadian price.)

And overall, GW are nowhere near as horrid as many other companies. Sure they've got some crappy practices, but they're nothing like say Target who's attitude is litterly, "Well, seniors now get to buy maybe 2-3 items for the same cost as what 4-6 items would've cost them at Zellers."
Nice eh? Talk about an outright 'screw-you' to everyone on a limited budget... (and don't even try to touch how awful most customer service is compared to GW's!)
