Subject: best unit to 'spawn' using a portaglyph?

well its as the title says really. what is the best unit that you can choose from the use of a portaglyph, for facing tau?
my two favourites so far have to be the pink horrors and plaguebearers. as the pink horrors, no matter what siz e of unit they are will always get 2d6 shots with a s5 ap4 weapon... and the plaguebearers are like terminators when deployed in cover.
so... what would you say?
please leave your reasons for your choice in your comments.
thanks, Anarkh.

I think it depends, to an extent, on the amount you roll (actually, that's one for YMDC - do you roll then choose the god, or vice versa?)
If I rolled really bad (say 5-7) I would probably choose Horrors as they scale to small units very nicely. For really large units (13-15) I would probably go with Daemonettes. Thing is, it does depend on where the Glyph is, where the opponent is, what cover's nearby, and so forth... It's not an easy question to answer.
But as a rough rule, I would say Horrors are generally the best call, Plaguebearers if their job is solely to capture an objective / sit in cover, and Daemonettes if you want to distract the opponent or if you're guaranteed to charge next turn.

its only a squad of D6 daemons spawned, so I don't know why you are talking about those sort of numbers...

Because I've been thinking about the 12 result on the Warp Storm table
If it's just D6, I would definitely say Horrors or Plaguebearers, depending on if you want them to kill stuff or to not die. Horrors should be the default.

yeah, I totally agree... if I deploy the glyph on turn one, I would get 2-3 units of pink horrors for 30pts... (even if there is only 3 in each squad, it would still get 2d6 shots, and even if the opponent shot at them it would be overkill, where the shooting would be put to better use elsewhere... )

Pretty much Pink Horrors hands down, in cover they tend to turn into 2+/3+ cover save with 5++ and can reroll 1s when going to ground.
I think the portal glyph is purely for spawning objective camping troops and that's about it.
Pink horrors can still shoot if they are on the ground or far away.
Compared to the other 3 which can do just nothing when they are far away.

Definitely Horrors. Even if you spawn just 1 Horror, that's 2D6 S5 shots! Plus, that's more units you can use to try to ground enemy FMC's or try to hurt enemy flyers (tough, but it could happen with a little luck). There is no comparison IMO.

I agree with Jy2. Just one horror has the firepower of most units. You just always have to make sure you are putting the glyph down within striking distance of objectives.

I would go with plague bearers because they are super tough and will not easily yeild a victory point to tau shooting. Also good for taking objectives and holding them in melee.

Tell that to those Tau markerlights. Think you're getting 3+/2+ cover? Think again.

Well if the Tau are going to use their Markerlights on a unit of 1-6 Plaguebearers that just spawned they won't be using them on something else that is perhaps of more importance in your army.

Maybe not right away, but they will use it after taking care of the more dangerous units.
In any case, the PB's are not contributing to anything while sitting on objectives. Pink horrors can still contribute to the offense while sitting on an objective. And the more Tau troops killed, that means less pulse weapons are firing at daemons in normal mode and during support fire overwatch.

Says who? i certainly don't see any evidence to support that. In fact, i would say the exact opposite is the right ruling, as the codex says "spawn 1d6 daemons (you'r choice of bloodletters, Pink horrors, Plaguebearers or daemonettes)", thus implying you spawn 1d6 daemons, and then decide what type it will be. At least that's how i would interpret it.

The dice WILL roll ones on the critical rolls.
Universal rule 2:
If no one is rolled on the critical rolls, the dice are storing them for an even more critical roll.

The game of 40K is you always choose which unit first and then roll.
For example, you don't roll for reserves first and then declare which unit it was that was coming in. You declare which unit is coming in first and then you roll. You don't roll to hit first and then declare afterwards whether it is your lascannon firing or your boltgun. You have to declare which is firing first (or use different color dice to differentiate which is which....again, you have to declare which dice is for which gun). You don't strike first in combat and then declare whether that was a power weapon attack or a normal attack.
The game doesn't work that way unless the rules expressly permits you to. For example, the psychic power Psychic Communion explicitly gives you permission to roll for reserves first and then decide if you want to use the power afterwards. But if a rule does not give you permission, you declare first and then you take action.
In this case, you declare first which unit you want. Then you roll a D6 to see how many comes in.

I'm not seeing how failed shooting by horrors can gimp you....considering letters, daemonettes and plaguebearers who can't shoot at all.

Totally situational.
Going to hang back near an objective=horrors/plaguebearers.
Goint to assault meq=bloodletters
Going to assault a vehicle=deamonettes
Rolled a 1 for # of deamons=pink horror it has the same dakka as 10 pink horrors
The beauty of the glyph is it's adaptability.

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but refuse. They cling to the realm, or love, or the gods…illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is, but they’ll never know this. Not until it’s too late.

My vote for best is pink horrors for all the reasons already stated.
Daemonettes also have merit if you need to book it to an objective late game to either take or contest it. The extra run distance really helps there.
