I went in at Battlecry + some. I asked a question about the models and here is the answer:

Palladium Books says:
Hi

The pieces are unassembled and unpainted. We will be running some hobby articles after release to show some easy ways to get your force looking nice with minimal cost and effort.

Once you assemble them they are fixed. However, in the comments section many people are discussing ways to magnetize the arms for added versatility.

Thanks,
Ninja Division

If not for the mediocre who would be great, and thank goodness for those who are just terrible they make even those who are mediocre look great

I'm definitely planning to use magnets to let my Artillery pods be light or heavy as needed. If the only change is the missiles on their back, it should be a pretty simple procedure, even for a modelling noob like me.

Might look at doing something similar with some of the Destroids, depending on how much goes into differentiating them, and how anal retentive I'm feeling of their appearance (ie; do I just build them into whatever and differentiate similarly to the Artillery pods by just swapping out the arms, even if there's more separating them than that?)

I like that idea. I like the idea of a tomahawk build with defender arms. Now I really can't wait till Dec. since this KS has begun I've hardly looked at anything to do with GW.

btw, people asked for a heads up, so here it is;

In about 4 hours time (5pm EST) I'm going to finally, officially change from my current tier (Blitzkrieg) to Reckless, as 2 of my friends are buying in (2 sets for 1 guy, 1 for another and 1 for me), which actually works out to save me nearly $20 on my box, so hooray for that.

So just an FYI. I have no idea how long it takes Kickstarter to update based on tier changes, but around 5pm tonight there'll be a Blitzkrieg (Early Bird of Battle Cry) available.

Good hunting to whomever is hoping to get it.

Why would you want a weedy Defender when you could have a Tomahawk? Particle cannons over autocannons any day of the week for me.

Since the legs are likely the interchangeable part, why not just put a magnet in the waist?

Depends on how they do the models. If we get 8 torsos, sure. If we get 4 with bits to modify one into the other, then the next defining feature (in my eyes) would be the arms.

On further inspection, full torsos might indeed just be the easiest way to do them. I thought they were more similar than it appears they might be.

I would expect each sprue to have the one set of legs and the two torsos with the the appropriate weapons also included as separate pieces.

I am expecting the majority of the torso weapons not to be separate, so each mdel will be a relatively small number of parts.

need to appeal to the casual gamer as well as the modeller

Yeah - the torsos will have to be significantly different. The only real similarities in the models is the legs.

Same with the other Destroid pair.

The Spartan and Phalanx share no similarities. That will have to be two different mecha on one sprue.

Cool, thanks for the update and the heads up to dakkites; looks like someone snapped it up quick!

We've hit the 2400 pledgers goal as well so all core sets are upgraded to plastic including an apparently 40k style 5" blast template for big shots like the MAC II.

We have reached 2400 backers, the weapons template in the boxed game will now be upgraded from card to plastic!

The image shown below is just a rough mock-up but the template measures 5 inches across and is used to represent VERY LARGE EXPLOSIONS!!! The sort of explosions that things like Mk.II Monsters like to make....

Next up on the Strength in Numbers queue is free Bonus Support Battlepods to every pledge of Battle Cry or higher. We only need 2600 backers to do it!

We're also steadily marching towards upgrading the Spartan Pack. We'll do another teaser of the $500k stretch goal here at $460k

Wow.

I'm late to the party, but I'm surprised at how *much* stuff is going to be in this kickstarter. Last I checked it was way less per base set.

Sign me up for that Mk2 Monster. It was always the coolest mecha in the series anyway.

Their goal is supposedly to get the entire macross series done in the KS. Hopefully that broad scope won't delay the arrival like with so many other KSs. It's not really the case here but the comments on the kickstarter can get a bit entitled. The kickstarter "suffers" a bit from people knowing exactly what they can make and they wanted it right way in the first few days and they wanted it free. The freebie tier was indeed a bit lackluster in the beginning when compared with two of the core sets but the value of the former would only increase. It's not a Myth level of freebies but then again Myth wasn't an 80's tv and toy phenomenon and has to build up that playerbase instead of tapping into an existing thirsty one like robotech. Either way, I'm happy with my blitzkrieg tier and I've gotten 4 extra destroids free over the past 5 and I've got another 3 zentraedi likely to unlock in the next few days (2 support pods and the hinted Khyron freebie). That's a pretty darn good return on my initial pledge and it'll only get better, especially in what I expect to be a big rush in the final 48 hours.

edit: And the 500k stretch goal has been officially announced:

Khyron's Glaug Battlepod will be unlocked at $500,000. His Glaug will feature a unique pose and a removable cockpit canopy revealing the hotheaded commander himself.

Khyron will be available as a free BONUS to all pledges of Battle Cry and above.

He will also be available as an optional Purchase Add-on for $15 for those of you who just can't get enough Khyron, or just want some extra unique poses for your Glaugs.

Looks like they had the same idea (or were inspired by mine) of having the opened cockpit zentraedi special character models. Sweet! It doesn't mention him as a limited edition for the kickstarter like rick and roy though. Also, Roy was the 260k stretch and with Khyron coming in at 500k, it looks like we get a special character roughly on the 250k intervals. Maybe max at 750k and miriya at the 1 mill mark?

On a super side note. I wonder how tall the Battloids are. . . I dont think they are the full 70mm but I can only really extimate off of the game vid. . .

Miriya and Max would be EPIC! Though I think those 2 will be the most OP of the units just because they are THE best pilots in Macross saga (if memory recalls right)

Really hoping to see armored veritechs before anymore characters. I know I am being greedy but I want as many of the basic pieces as possible. I can add characters like Max etc later on.

Well it's almost at the halfway mark and they're running low on mecha!

Here's what I see

Mandatory
Super Veritech
Armored Veritech
Female Power Armor
Terrain (card or plastic)

Possible
Cats Eye Recon
Ghost
Conventional vehicles
Zentradi on foot
Breetai or other Zentradi special characters on foot
Static defenses (ie the guns on the SDF-1 or Zentradi ships)
More special characters VTs (Max and Miraya)
Giant holographic Lynn Minmei molded in translucent pink with a sound chip

Am I missing anything? So that might take some of the wind of their sails (and sales) if all that's left is upping what you get, which might even lead people to drop their pledges.

I still haven't pledged. My inner child says yes! yes! yes! my outer adult looks that closet of dead minis and shakes his head.

Yeah, they're running low on mecha but they're also reaching a pledge total where reasonable pledgers should expect larger stretch goals. I expect goals at about 10% of the current total and we're running a bit behind; looking at big kickstarters like Dwarven Forge, the goals ended up at 100k apart at the end IIRC.

Conventional vehicles is a category that could include over 6 models depending on how detailed you want to get. They could also do the booster pods for both the glaug and veritech as well but I think they'd be of limited in game use. I frankly expect 2 artillery pods in each core as a future stretch goal as well. Then there's Miriya in a FPA as opposed to the veritech (which I find a bit less likely). As for bigger vehicles, I'd expect that the "biggee" if any for the zentraedi side would be the theatre scout pod. Although the anime had it horribly oversized at times in certain scenes, it's not too much out of the ballpark of the existing MAC II and would be an interesting visual counterpart in terms of size (but more useful in terms of maybe command points than sheer firepower).

I don't think we'll see $100K Stretch goals - they'd be a momentum killer.

The preview rules have already confirmed they're bringing the Macross Movie Strike Valkyrie in to the fold. Assuming the Super Valkyrie kit will have options to make both.

It also confirmed the VE-1 Elintseeker recon/EW Valkyrie, which should be totes cool.

Are you sure it's the DYRL strike Valkyrie? I saw just the simple reference to armored and super veritechs in the preview rules but nothing that would indicate the movie version. I assume by "movie version" you mean the variant used that differs from the TV one, namely with a giant barrel sticking out of one of the booster jets.

@warboss - 2 Arty pods are the 2600 Backer Stretch already.

I still say more Character minis will be rolled out as bait later as well.

@talon: They sure are but I'm referring to including two in each core set. I see that as the next core set minis upgrade similar to the recent destroid boost whereas what you're bringing up is a blitzkrieg+ freebie only. Adding two arty pods still keeps the zentraedi forces legal but gives them some variety at the cost of likely just a single sprue. They wouldn't even have to include two extra pods in all likelihood if they designed the sprue right.

Yup, the Strike only exists in Ai Oboete Imasuka. Dual particle beam cannons replace the right missile housing.
