Thanks for the input guys.

And yeah, half the fun of these events is getting to see all the cutie cosplay girls and meet the celebrities.

At the last Comikaze Stan Lee came by our booth, Earnest Borgnine came and talked to us. We met the actors from Boondock Saints (and Daryl from The Walking Dead), etc. It really is a lot bigger than just a tournament, and super fun.

As a part of the contract I am negotiating with Anime Expo we are asking for the ability to walk our guys and gals in without waiting in registration lines. It will make the experience much smoother.

Man, it's so crazy. I remember going to this thing way back when I was 17 and it was at the Marriott near LAX and it was really just a bunch of dorks and fansub clubs and stalls hocking VHS tapes and random paraphernalia. Cute cosplay girls? Ha! HA!

My, how it has grown.

So, honestly, I'd have to give it some thought. I'm not so worried about theft. I hear what Kimchi is saying, it could be fun. But on the other hand I could see constant interruptions and distractions being nerve-wracking as hell.

As of right now, 65% Hell yeah! 35% Not so sure...

Not that you moving forward with it is in any way contingent on my participation!!!

As stated, this will be the third time we've run an event in a giant Con at the convention center so we're very familiar with the ups and downs.

We put a partition around the event so that people can't come in to the tournament, they can only observe from the outside. We also have a staff member walking around the perimeter to keep an eye on everything and answer the questions of folks watching. You really aren't getting hit with distractions, trust me. This isn't our first rodeo.

And the hall is HUGE, like gargantuan. It honestly isn't crowded inside. Comikaze had over 40,000 people and you could walk around with ease. It is not as crowded as I get the impression people think it is.

Ok, cool. Sounds fun. Roughly what would be the price of admission?

I'm hammering out ticket price now, but I am shooting for the $55-$65 range which includes full Con admission. It's a really good deal when you look at the cost of the con itself.

It is tough concentrating on the game when the barely dressed asian cos-play girls gather for their costume contests...but I'm willing to accept that sacrifice.

Been to both ComiKaze's...despite the general noise level, they were both really fun events. The better painted armies also tend to get piccys taken by non-gamers and end up on non-gamer type blogs...which gets more people interested in the game and is good for the continued growth of the hobby.

That is SO true. We handed out hundreds of cards at the last two Comikaze's and were running demos left and right, explaining what the game was to tons of people that like nerd culture but had previously been unaware of 40K of war gaming. It seriously grows the hobby.

Have you given any thought to running a small Warmahordes event alongside 40k at these events? The more types of games seen the more people we can trap!

Yeah, we have a reliable Warmahordes TO now, so I think so long as their isn't already an event going on, we will incorporate those events as well.

If you do a Warmahordes event be sure to let Travis, Disdainful, from Game Empire Pasadena know. They have a huge Warmahordes group with quality players who I know love going to the larger WMH events.

Provided we could get in early and beat the chaos like at Comikaze last year, I'm all for another convention-al GT

Having to stand in line with thousands of other con-goers while holding a tub full of Dark Eldar would be

I'm definitely down for some more 40k tho. Reece and his crew did a fine job of policing things at Comikaze and if we can get a similar setup I don't mind a bit of spectator action with my games of The Floor Is Lava.

@Kelly

haha, Conan's guide to 40K!

@Loch

Yeah, we will have the same set up with the railing around the event to keep the looky-loos out. Trust me, we're going to keep your guys' stuff safe.

We are finalizing the contract with Anime Expo now, I would say this event is 99% a go at this point. Going to be a blast!

I am working with them on a way to get our guys and gals in as swiftly as possible to avoid the cluster-F that was Comikaze registration last year. I am confident that we will streamline the process. Speaking of which, I am talking to the folks at Comikaze now too, and we are addressing that issue. They have plans in place to make registration a lot smoother.

That's honestly a deal breaker for me going. Not sure about others.

How long is the wait, generally? Any more than 10 minutes or so and I would definitely have to think about it.

You guys are thinking about Comikaze.

Please, please, please remember these are not related events in terms of administration, logistics, etc.

This is a totally different company, different everything. Comikaze year 1 and 2 were totally different.

Anime Expo isn't expecting the same levels of attendance as Comikaze and, Comikaze is ramping up logistics to get people in more smoothly this year.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
In other words, don't use Comikaze as a comparison point to the upcoming Anime Expo, they are apples and oranges.

Of course we're comparing it to Comikaze.
Reecius wrote: It would be similar to Comikaze, with a lot of very cool things to see and do outside of just gaming.
Same venue, similar event - what else is there to compare it to?

I've been to various conventions of the comic & anime type, and it's been similar every time - if you want to get in when the doors first open, you can plan on lining up a couple hours ahead of time. Doesn't mean they aren't well-run, it just means that a few thousand people want to pass through a limited-capacity gate at the same moment. Show up a couple hours later, and you can usually just walk in.

But unless you can start the tournament a couple hours after the con opens, it's an issue.

I meant compare it to Comikaze in terms of overall feel, venue, etc. Not in terms of logistics and administration. Two different companies with two different systems.

Update!

We have resolution on the badge/registration issue.

We will have no problem getting everyone in on time. I anticipate that not only will we have everyone in on time, but early.

We will be able to have your badges in hand as early as 8am on Saturday, and in the door right on time when the event starts at 10am. We will most likely start the tournament at 10:45 am.

So, no worries there guys, we will have you in with a minimal wait in line at the most, probably just come right in with no wait at all.

This is going to be a really fun event! I can't wait. We should have the contract signed this week.

One thing though, we will only have enough space for 32 players! So if you want to come, grab tickets as soon as we put them up for sale.
