I have tons of mini's magnitzed, and this is pretty much how I do it - (or actually, I use apoxie sculpt, cheaper and dries hard) - I bead up the putty, put it in the base, and push it flush on the magnet.
Works great.
My display board (and painting boards, and some storage trays) are all sheet metal, and this works wonders keeping them stable.
I use rare earth magnets, which I buy in bulk from k&j magnetics.
