Subject: Best source of Autocannons for GK Dread?

Hi Dakka,
I'm thinking of starting a GK army to give my crons a break. I'm looking to maximise use of models I like the look of the most, so am thinking that three Dreadknights and three Dreadnoughts with dual twin linked autocannons (for some reason I just like the thought of autocannons. Probably a hangover from being shot by them!)
I was hoping that Dakka would share some tips on how to get the dreads put together cost effectively. In particular:
1) Can I just use normal dread kits or do I need ironclad or venerable?
2) Where do I get all the autocannons from?
If you have any tips about kit bashing up GK terminators or GKSS, that would be great!
Thanks Dakka!

You can use AC's from pretty much anywhere (the exception being tank mounted weapons). The most popular I've seen are the ones from the ADL Quad gun. If you want actual sculpted dreadnought arms with AC's Forgeworld sells both left and right mounts.

I've seen directions for making AC arms out of IG HWT Autocannons. Depending on the seller those ACs should go pretty cheap on ebay etc.

As for which kits to use, there are a couple other factors to consider:
1. Venerable dreads cost the same as normal ones.
2. Venerables come with way more visual customization options if you want to make them look distinct.
3. If you're kitbashing, the situation with the arms gets complicated. The Venerable kit comes with a right arm that you can slot weapons into, while the basic dread kit has the weapons as part of the arm. The slottable arm is a lot easier to build a TL autocannon into. On the other hand (ha!) the Venerable does not come with a missile pod left arm, which is much easier to build into an autocannon than the melee left arm.
Long story short, if you're getting multiple kits, I recommend at least one of each type (Venerable and normal, you can safely ignore Ironclad and Furioso).

Thanks, I'll do that. Is it easy to turn a missile pod into an Autocannon? Just wondering if I should give that a go.

For my psyfleman, I did the ADL conversion. Rather than just graft the autocannon assemblies on in place of the arms, I fitted the autocannons into the ven dread right arm and the missile pod left. Here are some photos of my dread (unpainted, and one of the ammo feeds needs to be reattached) and the arms by themselves so you can judge whether you want to try this conversion yourself.
