Oh look, another gun thread... oh, this one is about children dying. Fantastic.
I don't really see this as a gun control issue, it's more of a parenting one. Yes it wouldn't have happened without guns, but what's more likely to happen; People locking up their guns properly or guns suddenly vanishing?

"‘just one of those crazy accidents.’"
Is it? IS IT REALLY? Or is it the absolutely most likely outcome when you give a loaded firearm as a gift to a 5 year old child?
I'm reminded of an SNL weekend update, with Norm Macdonald was doing it. He mentioned a headline where a 10 year old was mauled by their family's pet cougar, and added "Authorities are unsure of why it attacked". He then waited a moment and added "perhaps it's cause.... their pet was a cougar."

It is most definitely a parenting issue :-\
also Ouze, while I agree with your statement, I believe the idiot from Kentucky was referring to the point that the crazy accident was that the children's parents were allowed to procreate... twice

They ruled it an accident, and I think CPS is highly unlikely to take a surviving child in such an event unless there is some subsequent development - they're going to presume they have been punished enough, and it's no one's best interest to take the child. And I think they'd be right.
It was totally negligent imo, but I don't think you're getting the horse back in the barn on this one; so to speak.

Ok where to start. First off, The rifles? Dakka has changed my mind about guns quite a bit.
But one thing i will never stop seeing is th guns are meant for ADULTS. not 5 year olds. Who in their right mind would let their kid play with a loaded rifle? Maybe get them a rifle, but no rounds for it. Let him get the feel of the rifle. maybe when he hits 11 or so let him handle a loaded rifle.
Then, who thinks it is a good idea to get a gun in the house with a 2 year ld and not properly secure.
3rd. Im am now calling the rifles "My little Rifles: Bullets are magic"

One would hope that, at least temporarily they child gets put with another, hopefully better suited relative; And that the parents be given some counseling on HOW to properly parent, since they clearly don't know how to do it right. I would hate to see the surviving kid removed permanently, but my guess is, the kid will stay with the parents (and hopefully all firearms were removed from the property after this incident, since clearly even the parents do not know basic firearm safety)

The thing that seems most worrying to me is the manufacturer.
Why does something like"MY FIRST GUN" exist? This is the same kind of marketing as cigarettes for kids back in the day.

There's nothing wrong with an 11 year old who possesses the appropriate level of maturity and the ability to listen to and follow directions learning how to shoot a gun while being appropriately supervised. I learned how to shoot a gun before I was 11, and so did many of my family and friends. Learning to shoot at a young age is not uncommon in many rural areas. It's okay for kids to learn how to shoot but they need to be supervised by someone who knows what they're doing the entire time.

"Most" families are capable of buying a "starter" gun for their kids... I know growing up I loved going shooting with my dad, etc. There is an allure to nearly everyone of having quality "father son" time out in the "wilds" of the shooting range and popping a few rounds off together. It's one reason why we're such an awesome military... cuz most of us were taught to shoot as wee little mites
