Hello everyone! I'v recently been intrested into getting into the Infinity miniatures skirmish game and I was wondering, Other then the Infinity rulebook what do I need to get into the game? Is there any starter boxes? Do the armies have army books like in Warhammer? Or do you get cards like in Warmachine and Hordes? Thanks in advance.

Hello, first the books are for the fluff and pic, and the missions in the Campaign book, but the new ones online work as well (maybe better have got to really play them yet). The books update all factions at the same time so no army book or the like. Now saying that ALL the RULES and units for every faction are free to download from the CB official Infinity site. Starter Boxes are more of a faction or sectorial (faction sub army) sampler, with normal 3 base units and 3 other each different to show of a faction strength.

No cards, but there are online army builders official and not that you can use to print out army list with unit stats and weapon profiles, ALEPH's Toolbox is better then the official one right now.

Proxy a few 3 LI, and a HI vs. 3 LI and a HI games to learn the basic. Then pick the fiction with the models you like best, and buy them. Don't worry about them not being good, because Infinity doesn't have that problem. They all work, you just have to learn how to use the unit.

Peter: As we all know, Christmas is that mystical time of year when the ghost of Jesus rises from the grave to feast on the flesh of the living! So we all sing Christmas Carols to lull him back to sleep.
Bob: Outrageous, How dare he say such blasphemy. I've got to do something.
Man #1: Bob, there's nothing you can do.
Bob: Well, I guess I'll just have to develop a sense of humor.

There are no army books, and each factin has from 1 to 3 different starters - depending on the army or sectorial army you want to get you may have the ability to choose a starter.

Which faction are you interested in?

All the rules are on the website, so you don't need the books. They only have extra fluff not available anywhere else, and, in the case of the third book, have a handful of missions, that are a structured campaign.

Tell us which faction you like the looks of the best, and we can help you more then. Unlike in Warh 40K, each faction is playable and each faction has access to 90% of the wargear options.

You don't even need the rulebooks, since the e-versions are free downloads. Though the hardbacks contain fluff and other bits and pieces you may want to read. Personally I think the unit descriptions and background fluff in the rulebooks, while not extensive, is very helpful for seeing the character of the factions and different units and characters.

Is there any starter boxes?

Several of the factions (I think all of them now?) have at least one starter set, with a selection of models. There is no starter set like in 40k where you get the rules and some models and dice etc.

Do the armies have army books like in Warhammer?

All the unit rules and stats are in the main rule books. Some of the online/offline army building tools will also allow you to print off force lists which have all the stats and rules for each model in your force for ease of use. There is also a fantastic wiki will all the rules on it that is cross linked so you can quickly look up any rules you are unclear of. Google "infinity the game wiki".

Or do you get cards like in Warmachine and Hordes?

Each blister of models has a card in which has the unit name and a picture of the model, but no rules included unfortunately

Thanks in advance.

The only other thing I suggest you get is a few D20's if you don't already have them.

Bear in mind that the "starter boxes" are not necessarily that.

Generally they give you three of what could be considered "cheerleader" units (cheap, regular units that allow you to generate orders for your order pool) and then three "specialist" units.
It's also important to note that a "starter box" is not necessarily playable out of the box. Some of them have waaaaaay too many Special Weapons Costs(SWC) requirements for smaller games that you'll play as introduction.

If you give us a good idea of the army/faction you're interested in, we can work with you to finesse what to pick up.

This cannot be overstated enough. The Infinity rules wiki is one of the most extensive and well cross referenced wikis I've ever had the joy of using. To make things even better it's actually built in to Aleph Toolbox

Well, I'd need books with the rules to play because no printer, no laptop, no computer where we play.. So to buy all I need is the.. *checks the store* Infinity 2nd Edition Rulebook, And maybe the THE HUMAN SPHERE - Expansion Rulebook, Aswell as a pair of army starter boxes?

As to what army I'm intrested in, I have no idea.. I like most of them.. They all have realy cool models..

If you're interested in the ALEPH Steel Phalanx or the Tohaa you'd need Campaign Paradiso as those lists are only within Paradiso.

What I would say is buy the three books first. Do you have people locally who play? A store that you could get interested into stocking the game?

I have a small "club" it is basically a place to play and 8 or so friends to play with, I dont know if any of them would be intrested in playing Infinity yet, I'm hoping that if I can get a book with images of the models and stuff I could get them intrested in trying it.. Currently we play Warhammer 40k, Are going to get back into Warhammer Fantasy, Aswell as playing Warmachine and Hordes.

I'm going to have to look arround a bit more on the models to see what armies I'm intrested in, All of them seem cool..

Personally I like Ariadna and the Nomads, as they are the kind of outcast factions that fight to remain free of "the man" (or in this case ALEPH - the AI which watches over the human sphere).

If you are lame like Kanluwen, then you will play ALEPH

Do you have any particular models you like from those?

Because you have within each of the factions (excluding Mercenaries and Tohaa at the moment) subfactions called "Sectorial" lists, which allow for certain models to be taken at a higher availability.

Not realy sure on specific models, I like a bit of everything in those armies. Well, In Ariadna I like the wolf style models..

Don't bother with sectorials until you have a good grip of rules as they introduce new dynamics and nuances that could lead to confusion. As others have said start with 150 point lists, they don't necessarily have to be starter sets as they aren't all balanced against each other but they certainly aren't a bad jumping off point.

I disagree. The only real problem that Sectorials introduce which cause problems are Link Teams--and you do not have to use those rules from the very beginning.

Link teams are the main strength of sectorials (and the increased AVA on certain troops to allow those link teams). With all the bonuses in active and reactive turns that link teams provide, to the newcomer they may seem overpowered and unfair. A good grounding in the basic rules is needed so that this perception doesn't turn new players away from the game.

Not using link teams in smaller point games is fine, but new players will soon feel the bite of the limitations that sectiorial lists have without the the added boon of link teams, which in turn may turn them off from the game.

I'm not seeing the problem here.

It really is just as simple as "We're going to run some low points games using the basic rules to start with, then gradually work our way into the bigger stuff".

I would not suggest people just starting out to use the Campaign or Spec Ops rules, but it's a rather natural progression and not that difficult to start out using "Sectorial Lite" lists without the Link teams but allowing for the increased AVA on certain troop types to give players a good "feel" for how the theme that they want to go with will work, even without them having Link teams in play.

Please note that I'm completely biased. While I like the anime slant that Infinity has, when it comes to things like catgirls I draw the line. The reason that I like Haqqislam is not only the aesthetic of the models that has anime leanings (if the Maghariba Guard isn't the tank from Ghost in the Shell I'm a monkeys uncle), but also the fact that compared to the affiliations and goings on of other factions, in my eyes they are the good guys. Sure they might do some shady business deals due to thier human monopoly on SILK, but even the lowliest PanO troop has a Cube so Haqqislam are at least offering the chance at cognitive immortality to everyone. Thier goals are about philosophical, medical and terraforming advancement. Noble goals that will further enrich the lives across the human sphere.

Oh! I have two more questions that I thought of last night, One, Does the rule book have images of the models, Or some of the models atleast? (Would make it easier to convince friends to try the game) And how many models per side is normal? I know you can play with as little as three models per side, But what is the average army sizes?

Oh well, My friends said they wont try any new games cus we already play too many games (Warhammer 40k and Warmachine currently) so I guess I dont need any more help, Thanks for all the help though!

Models per side is roughly anywhere from 10 to 15 on average, with some factions (Ariadna immediately springs to mind but Combined Army can do this as well) having 20+.

The rulebooks do have some images of the models, but it's mostly artwork. The rulebooks tend to have images of the models in the rule sections rather than the army sections, as something important to note about Infinity is that proxying certain models/loadouts is pretty much a necessity due to Corvus Belli's almost glacial release schedule.

Cb has also said they won't ever release every possible troop/weapon combination so proxing is pretty much must.

Yes.. but I think the ones that are most demanded will probably come along at some point ("Raicho, is that you?! Quiet at the back!" )

A lot of the others, like medic/engineer options (which come for many, many unit choices) I don't think it's reasonable to expect in all cases, and are often achievable with just a bit of a different paintjob in any case.
